Nexus 5: unboxing and quick Nexus 4 comparison [VIDEO]

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 05:52 PM PST

Nexus 5 unboxing featured

Like many of you, Phandroid spent a good portion of their day in anticipation, eagerly awaiting the moment the Nexus 5 would land on our doorsteps. Well, earlier this evening the UPS man finally arrived and we are now in possession of the Google influenced but LG-made Nexus 5.

Rather than give you the typical boring ‘ol unboxing, we decided to boot it up, take a quick gander at Android 4.4 KitKat and quickly see how the Nexus 5 compares to it’s older brother, the Nexus 4.

Nexus 5 front back hands on

Without giving away too much, there was a 128MB day-1 update that took a few minutes to download and apply, but after that we booted into the new Google launcher which we found a tad odd, if not endearing. Google Now setup was also tricky (hint: you’ll need to actually search for something just to get it up and running on the homescreen).

Of course, we’ll be bringing you more Nexus 5 tips, tricks, comparisons, and our full review once we’ve gotten a chance to put the device through its paces. In the meantime, check out our hands-on video and find out the single biggest reason why I love this phone more than the Nexus 4. Cheers.

Don’t worry, the wooden Moto X devices are still coming

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 03:18 PM PST

Motorola-Moto-X-10

We haven’t heard much of those sweet wooden Moto X devices we fell in love with during the announcement (at least I did). Many of us have been wondering what’s exactly going on with these options. Are they even coming? According to leak Guru @evleaks they are.

wood-moto-xOur favorite tipster got a leaked image that proves the wooden Moto X options are still in the works. The Moto Maker screenshot shows us the 4 options – Teak, Ebony, Rosewood and Bamboo. These all show as “Coming Soon”, except for the Bamboo version, which seems to be a bit delayed.

We are still not sure about the exact release date, but at the very least we know the plans to release these unique designs haven’t been axed yet. With some luck, we should be seeing them soon! I am really liking the Ebony one, which one are you thinking of getting?

MOGA Hero Power and Pro Power controllers released, they charge your phone as you play!

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 02:00 PM PST

moga-pro-power

PowerA has just released the all-new MOGA Hero Power and Pro Power controllers. These come with the same quality and form factor we have grown to love, but they really take it away with the controllers’ new feature. These devices actually charge your phone as you play!

One of the biggest problems about mobile gaming is battery life. Those powerful games can make your phone’s juice run out very fast. This becomes a problem when you realize you have been playing way too long and don’t have a power outlet around you.

moga-hero-power

The battery

The MOGA Hero Power and Pro Power have 1800 mAh and 2200 mAh batteries, respectively. This may be enough to completely charge your device once. At the very least you know you will not be left with little battery power when you are done dominating on your favorite mobile games.

How do the MOGA controllers charge my phone?

The controller plugs into your phone via microUSB, so there is not much science to the devices. They are simple to pair and use.

Price and availability

The MOGA Hero Power is the most affordable of the two. It features a slimmer profile and will run you for $59.99. This is a bit of a high starting price, but it will prove to be worth its price if you value battery life (most of us do).

The MOGA Pro Power is for more demanding gamers who prefer a bigger, more comfortable controller. One that will give you an advantage while playing those hard core mobile games. This bad boy costs $79.99, but does feature a larger battery.

You can get both of these from MOGA’s store, or simply wait a bit for retailers like Best Buy, Target, Sprint and Verizon to have them in stock. Such retailers should have these in “early November”, so any time now.

Are you getting a MOGA Power controller?

moga-hero-power-closed

This is a first for smartphone gaming controllers. I love the idea that these MOGA controllers double as a charger, and I will not wait one bit to get one of these. I already carry an external battery anyways. Why not take a MOGA Power controller instead?

Are you guys buying one?

Ingress exiting beta stage, now open to everyone

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 01:05 PM PST

Joining Ingress has been a bit of a pain. You need an invitation and the game has been in beta for almost a year now. It’s about time we start seeing the augmented reality app taking it’s next steps and that is exactly what is going on. Google is taking Ingress out of beta!

Everyone can join Ingress!

Ingress exits beta on December 14, 2013, but that is not the most exciting piece of nows. Starting today, everyone can actually join the fun! There is no longer an invite requirement in order to play Ingress. Simply go to the Google Play Store, download the app and play away!

Contests and prizes

Niantic Labs took advantage of this eventful announcement to also give us some details on their upcoming contests and challenges. First, there is the ‘Founder Medal’, in which all of those who reach level 5 by Dec. 14 will get an exclusive medal. Pretty cool badge to carry around!

There is also the Ingress Elite V challenge, in which all Ingress agents will be able to vote for the best 5 Ingress users in the world. Those who win this will get a trip to California for what they are calling “top secret Ingress briefings”, as well as an interview with Ingress’ Susanna Moyer.

And there is also the larger event, 13 Magnus. The idea is that Enlightened agent want to resurrect their leader, Roland Jarvis. To do this, they must find the 13 Jarvis Shards, but Resistance Agents will do everything they can to destroy them. These shards will be all over the world. (You can read more about dates and locations at Ingress’ post).

Start playing!

Ingress banner

As mentioned above, you can now download Ingress from the Google Play Store and play with no invitation! If you are still loving Ingress, you can check it out and try to participate in these cool events. As for me, I am not as excited about the game anymore. Do you guys still play?

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom for AT&T launches November 8th for $200

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 07:56 AM PST

AT&T has officially announced availability for the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, the point-and-shoot smartphone camera that will make many casual photographers happy. The device is launching November 8th for $200, a price that will obviously come with the need to sign a new two-year contract agreement. You can take the AT&T Next approach, of course, which gives you the phone for $25 a month (no down payment) and the option to upgrade after one year.

The 16 megapixel backside-illuminated CMOS sensor is outfitted with 10X optical zoom, which is something quite unheard of for a smartphone. It also has the oft-preferred Xenon flash. This wouldn’t be the first phone with such a camera, but it is the first time a mainstream option from a mainstream company has entered the fold.

AT_T_C105A_GalaxyS4Cam_h_extbackright_201311010949443_201311040729541

Non-camera specs for the Galaxy S4 Zoom include a 4.3-inch qHD display, a Pega-Dual +XMM6262 processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage (expandable up to 64GB using a microSD card), Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi N, NFC and more. It should launch with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean from the start, and will have Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface sitting on top.

It reads like an entry-level phone through and through, though we’re sure that sweet sensor on the back is going to reel in many folks at the point of sale. Let us know if you’ll be one of those come November 8th when it’s finally available.

FAA now lets you keep your device on throughout all phases of flight, so Amazon celebrates with 15% Kindle sale

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 07:19 AM PST

FAA-offer_2._V352672977_

In case you haven’t heard, the FAA — the lovely group that regulates airline safety — made changes to their electronic devices guideline. The biggest change most of us will care about is the fact that devices are no longer required to be powered down, no matter which phase of the flight you’re in. That doesn’t mean you should be on your laptop typing up expense reports during takeoff or landing — that stuff still has to be stowed away during those phases — but you no longer have to shut it down if you don’t want to.

With that, Amazon decided to take this opportunity to put all of their Kindle devices on sale. The company has slashed prices on their entire fleet of Kindle products, from the basic e-reader to the new Kindlre Fire HDX, by 15%. This means you could have the Kindle Fire HD for as little as $118, and the HDX for as little as $195.

Amazon’s latest Kindle Fire devices include the latest Fire OS 3.0, which brings many enhancements to make for a more beautiful, yet smoother experience. The biggest change is Amazon’s new Mayday button, which will get you a face-to-face Kindle specialist within a minute of pressing it in case you need help with your device. Two-way video chat and the ability for the specialist to remotely control your device gives you a helpline that’s more convenient than looking up online documents or having to swing by a store.

You can find out more about what the latest Kindle devices have to offer here. As for today’s sale, be sure to use coupon code ThnksFAA during checkout to get your 15% discount. Let us know if you’ll be taking advantage! PS: the sale ends today, so be as fast about buying it as the airplane you’ll be using it on.

Blackberry lives: won’t sell after $1 billion injection in private funding, new CEO

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 06:49 AM PST

Things weren’t look too hot for Blackberry when it was reported that the company was looking to sell to Fairfax Financial for $4.7 billion over a month ago. Many industry pundits expected such a sale to result in dismantling the company piece by piece and selling off different sectors to the highest bidders. Thankfully (and I do mean that), that won’t be the case.

blackberry_logo_post_image_600px

It’s being reported that Blackberry has called off the sale. We’re not sure what sort of behind-the-scenes mojo caused a “stay of execution,” but Blackberry was somehow able to secure over $1 billion in private funding (from Fairfax Financial and other unnamed investors) to stay afloat. With that, it seems CEO Thorsten Heins’ reign at the top of the company will come to an end. Taking his place at an interim level is John S. Chen.

“I am pleased to join a company with as much potential as BlackBerry,” said Mr. Chen. “BlackBerry is an iconic brand with enormous potential – but it’s going to take time, discipline and tough decisions to reclaim our success. I look forward to leading BlackBerry in its turnaround and business model transformation for the benefit of all of its constituencies, including its customers, shareholders and employees.”

John Chen is credited with helping Sybase, an information systems company, navigate stormy waters in troubling times. While his new role at Blackberry isn’t yet solidified with the promise of a long-term gig, it seems there’s no one better to help right the ship in the short term.

So what does this mean for Android, and the entirety of the mobile ecosystem? A couple of different, polarizing things:

  • Companies like Huawei or Lenovo looking to gain stronger footing in the North American market no longer have a legitimate chance at this experienced company. Their chances at global success haven’t been completely shut down with this news, but it does force them to find new ways to break in.
  • Competition is guaranteed from a healthy amount of different angles. If Blackberry continues to innovate and finds a way to put pressure on everyone else, it’ll make Google, Apple and Microsoft work that much harder to make sure their own offerings stay relevant in this fierce market.

Yes, we all joke about the relevance of Blackberry and how our one friend is the only person we know still using a Blackberry phone, but the truth of the matter is that it wouldn’t have been good for anyone to see Blackberry dissipate. While today’s news doesn’t guarantee long-term success, it does mean they’ll have another real chance at becoming a major player in the mobile space again.

One last look at Jelly Bean’s dominance before KITKAT arrives

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 06:10 AM PST

Google has updated the world on Android distribution numbers for the two-week period ending November 1st (which, if you didn’t already know, was the day immediately following the announcement of Android 4.4 KITKAT and the Nexus 5). So how do the numbers stack up before the first taste of chocolate begins to trickle onto the scene?

android numbers

Jelly Bean is still dominating the charts with a commanding lead over all the rest. It accounts for 52.1% of all Android devices that checked into the Google Play Store over the past two weeks. Of course, that statistic can be a tad misleading — a vast majority of those check-ins were on Android 4.1.x (37.3%), while 4.2.x (12.5%) and 4.3 (2.3%) lagged behind.

While the differences between those three revisions of Jelly Bean aren’t huge, it’s still alarming that only 2.3% of people were on the absolute latest version. That said, it is still an improvement over the 1.5% it had the last time Google updated us on these stats. The slight bump can be credited to companies like HTC and Samsung getting their flagship handsets upgraded to Android 4.3 starting in the past few weeks, and by launching their latest smartphones with the OS.

Moving on, we are a bit saddened to see that Gingerbread and Froyo still take up a combined 28% of the pie. We’re not sure which handsets are still keeping those versions’ heads above water, but it’s no less frustrating that it’s taking this long for legacy versions to die. We aren’t quite as saddened about the fact that Ice Cream Sandwich still has 19.8%, but old is old.

We should see KITKAT represented on this chart by the time the next update comes around, but history tells us we should expect adoption rates to be quite slow to start. Have you gotten upgraded to Android 4.3 or higher yet?

Motorola sends save-the-dates for Moto G announcement

Posted: 04 Nov 2013 04:54 AM PST

Discuss the Moto G at AndroidForums.com

It looks like Motorola’s accidental Moto G slip-up last week has caused the company to throw caution to the wind and confirm that the device exists (we already heard that much in a trademark filing a couple of weeks ago). They did just that with a save-the-date teaser going out to press this morning, with November 13th said to be the day that we see this new smartphone unveiled.

moto g nov 13

Press folks aren’t the only ones being invited to “attend” this showcasing, though — anyone interested can sign up right here to watch it live. But what is the Moto G, you ask? Rumors say it’s a mid-range smartphone that could be described as a more affordable Moto X. The latest leaked specs are said to include the following:

  • 4.5-inch 720p edge-to-edge display with Corning Gorilla Glass
  • 1.2GHz quad-core processor
  • 8GB of internal storage
  • 5MP rear camera with 1.3MP front camera
  • Android 4.3 Jelly Bean
  • WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and more

It’s quite odd that this phone is to be considered a peg below the Moto X when it has a quad-core processor, but we know specs don’t always tell accurate tales. For starters, this Qualcomm-based quad-core processor might not be as fast as the Krait-based Snapdragon S4 Pro-based dual-core processor inside the Moto X. And if Motorola hasn’t customized it for things like Touchless Controls, it certainly won’t be as great of an experience as what you’d find on the Moto X.

Of course, we have no clue if the above specs are final or what, if anything, Motorola has done to deliver an experience similar to their Moto X or the DROID phones. The latest rumors say this thing should be priced at about £135, though we can’t be too sure if that’s on-contract of off-contract pricing. If it’s the latter, we’d say there are lots of reasons to get excited once this thing drops this holiday season.

[Video] See Android KitKat’s amazing photo editor in action

kitkat photo editor

It isn’t going to be just the Nexus 5 users who are going to benefit from Google’s emphasis on photography in their latest flagship device: as it turns out, the camera app, which is part of AOSP, comes with a photo editor which in my opinion is one of the most powerful ones ever.

While it offers a significant number of preset filters for the casual user, there are numerous options for those who want finer control, and also allows them to save their combination of effects as a preset that they can reuse on different images later on. The editor is also non-destructive (i.e., your originals are safe). Do check out the video below to get the complete picture.

Nexus 5? That’s old stuff. Let’s talk about the Nexus 8

nexus 8You weren’t really naive enough to think that the leaks from Mountain View were going to end once the Nexus 5 went on sale, were you? No, sir, that’s not the way Google rolls these days. Having updated their Android.com domain with the release of Android 4.4, the above tablet, which we have so far not seen anywhere, was very visibly featured under the section A Library that goes with you.

Most of the web is considering the tablet to be an 8-inch one, particularly considering the slimmed down bezels from the top and bottom which I’m sure pretty much every one would welcome. While it’s difficult to estimate the size of the device from a single photo, if this is a real device that would be released significantly before summer 2014, it only makes sense that they build something in between their small and large tablet offering.

Is there a market for that size? I prefer 10″ tablets because I use them primarily for watching movies while travelling, and if the tablet is light enough, I don’t have fatigue issues holding it up for longer periods of time while reading. Having said that, the 7″ mark is where Android has excelled commercially. And if the tablet doesn’t take up any more space or weight than the current Nexus 7 and the cost is in the same vicinity, I’m quite confident that consumers would opt for the larger version.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus gets Android 4.4 KitKat ROM

Posted: 02 Nov 2013 09:19 PM PDT

verizon-galaxy-nexus-front-

When Android 4.4 KitKat was officially announced on October 31st, Android fans around the globe rejoiced. That is, unless they owned a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. With the roll-out of Android 4.4, Google had dropped support for their two year old Nexus device, only announcing that the Nexus 4, 7, and 10 would be getting OTA updates in the coming weeks. While this should be no surprise as it follows within Google’s 18 month life cycle, many Galaxy Nexus were upset to hear the news. Thankfully, we have talented Android developers here to save the day.

Android developer baldwinguy77, known for his OTA-like builds for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, has released a brand new, “Shiny” Android 4.4 KRT16M ROM for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus (toro). What does OTA-like mean? For starters, it’s built from AOSP with very few modifications done to the ROM, besides those needed to make it work. Next, he’s included the standard set of Verizon apps and Google apps you’d likely find on an official update. And lastly, because this is OTA-like, this ROM is not rooted (yet, it can easily be done if you choose).

If you’re a Verizon Galaxy Nexus user and wish to add a little KitKat to your life, head on over to the official Verizon Galaxy Nexus KitKat ROM thread on RootzWiki. Please remember while this ROM states “no bugs”, Android 4.4 ROMs are still very new and there’s likely to be a hiccup along the way. That said, baldwinguy77 has a good track record and plans to continually update the ROM as needed.

Why break your back with a ten kilo camera bag to get the photograph you want when the new Apple devices can capture them just as well? The times of hauling out the film markers and scissors to be able to edit photographs professionally are over and it is now possible for the everyday person to make their personal photos look great by just using your Apple device.

Look away now: there’s another patent storm coming Google’s way

Posted: 02 Nov 2013 11:54 AM PDT

mobile patents trendsThe summer of 2011 was a crazy time in the world of mobile patents. In fact, by far the craziest ever as Google Trends would tell you. It seemed like every major software company in the world had Android in their cross hair, with Apple, Microsoft and Oracle leading the charge.

There was one particular case that stands out more than the others: the Nortel patent acquisition.

The Nortel patents is what got Google to really chase patent reforms. Having had their $900 million bid selected as the “stalking-horse bid”, Kent Walker, a Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Google penned a blog reiterating the company’s stance on the need for patent reform, and why they were bidding for the patent portfolio.

Today, Nortel selected our bid as the "stalking-horse bid," which is the starting point against which others will bid prior to the auction. If successful, we hope this portfolio will not only create a disincentive for others to sue Google, but also help us, our partners and the open source community—which is integrally involved in projects like Android and Chrome—continue to innovate.

A little under three months later, Google surprisingly lost the auction. How did that happen? As MG Siegler put it in this column on TechCrunch, it was essentially like a scene out of the James Bond movie Casino Royale. Google was outbidding everyone, with Apple left as the only company left competing against them. When Apple saw that they were going to lose, they decided to back a consortium that had just given up: Rockstar Bidco. With Apple’s support, the consortium offered $4.5 billion.

Google, who at the last moment had been joined by Intel, weren’t ready to go over $4.4 billion. Instead they saw Apple walk away as winners. Who were the companies part of Rockstar Bidco? Microsoft (as you would expect), RIM, EMC, Ericsson and, this is the toughest to take, Sony. Not only was the average cost to each of the winners ($750 million) less than Google’s stalking-horse bid, there was an Open Handset Alliance member on the opposing side.

The loss set in motion even stronger patent-reform lobbying by Google, as well as the eventual Motorola acquisition in August of that year. For a while, it seemed like the entire fiasco had been buried. Unfortunately, this past week, Rockstar Bidco fired the first bullets in what can aptly be described as a “World War” between mobile companies: the consortium mentioned above, against the listed “infringers”: Google, Samsung, ASUStek, Pantech, HTC, LG, Huawei and ZTE.

It looks like we are going to be hearing about this for a very, very long time.

What’s the best Android phone to buy as of November 2013?

Posted: 02 Nov 2013 08:18 AM PDT

Halloween has come and gone, and Google has delivered the tasty treat we’ve all been waiting for. We’re talking about the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KITKAT, of course. You can find out every single thing you need to know about those beautiful concoctions in our round-up post, where Edgar wraps up everything there is to know about the release (including some cool system apps and wallpapers that you can already download!). Now that all of that is out of the way, it’s time to run through our best Android phones list for November. Buckle up!

5 – Samsung Galaxy S4

Samsung Galaxy S4 Design

It might be a bit alarming that the Samsung Galaxy S4 has dropped to number 5 on our list this month, but the Samsung Galaxy S4 is getting… old. Not quite old enough to knock it out of the top 5, mind you, but old. Samsung is doing some good things lately, with the company delivering timely Android OS upgrades. Some users are already getting set up with Android 4.3, which brings a Premium Suite upgrade that improves camera features and adds compatibility for the Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watch.

4 – HTC One

HTC One rocks 2

HTC One’s big brother One Max isn’t on this list, but that’s because it offers nearly nothing over the more pocketable 4.7-inch version. The HTC One is still a fine phone by this year’s standards, and like Samsung is doing with the Galaxy S4, HTC is getting serious about Android upgrades. 4.3 is rolling out to most users right now (though Verizon faithful will have to wait until the end of this month after an unfortunate delay). With HTC already promising Android 4.4 KitKat down the line, this is still one attractive pickup (and the Snapdragon 600 processor inside this thing is still strong enough to keep it ticking as smoothly as any other).

3 – Samsung Galaxy Note 3

galaxy-note-3-multiwindow

Surprised to see the Galaxy Note 3 jump back two spots this month? This is still a fine phone, folks, but a certain other South Korean company has been coming with some major heat lately — more on that later. It was hard to put the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in the middle of the pack considering it doesn’t have “middle of the pack” specs. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM and a 13 megapixel camera aren’t middle of the pack specs, but I could still do without a lot of Samsung’s TouchWiz. And 5.7 inches is just big enough to be uncomfortable (despite the phone being the same overall size as the Galaxy Note 2).

2 – LG G2

Last month, I applauded LG for a finely crafted phone, but didn’t think their software was the bee’s knees. It still isn’t the light coat of paint I’d prefer, but it has grown on me, and I find it to be more lightweight and pain-free to use than Samsung’s TouchWiz.

lg-g2-6

The G2′s Snapdragon 800 processor makes this thing ridiculously fast, and the beautiful 5.2-inch 1080p display is absolutely scrumptious. Gimmicks like the back-facing buttons and LG KnockOn don’t phase me, so they didn’t factor in here — it was pure smartphone mastery that made me award LG the number two slot.

1 – Nexus 5 by LG

I bet you saw this coming. The Nexus 5 is but a few days old, but it’s one exciting device for many different reasons. It’ll be the absolute first phone with Android 4.4 KITKAT. It’ll be the fastest Nexus smartphone ever, with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 quad-core chipset and 2GB of RAM.

nexus-5-picture

It’ll have the most beautiful display of any Nexus handset with a 4.95-inch 1080p HD display. And while the 8 megapixel backside-illuminated camera with Optical Image Stabilization might not be the best camera in the world, it should suffice for most modest cell-phone photographers’ needs.

Specs alone aren’t the only thing to consider, though (which is why the Note 3 isn’t number one on this list). To get all of this in a package that starts at just $350 is astounding. It makes the Nexus 5 the best value in smartphones, and considering you’ll be promised the latest Android upgrades as soon as you can get them,we’d say there’s no reason to consider anything else (unless, you know, you’re stuck with someone like Verizon).

Runner-ups

  1. Moto X — It slipped outside the top 5 thanks to some very strong launches last month, but the Moto X is still one of the best Android phones you can get. Great battery life, Touchless Controls and Active Notifications make sure of that.
  2. Motorola DROID Maxx — Think Moto X, except with two full days of battery life, a bigger display and sweet Kevlar back-coated goodness.
  3. Sony Xperia Z1 — Sony’s “Ultra” variant of the Z is a bit too much for our tastes, but the Z1 is still a fine device. We wish Sony would find a way to chop that bezel down, though.
  4. Nexus 4 by LG — Yes, it’s been handily outclassed by the Nexus 5, but the Nexus 4 will be a force for quite some time. You might have to take to eBay to get yours at this point, though, as Google has taken it off the Play Store.
  5. Motorola DROID Mini — Let’s face it: not everyone is impressed by a bigger display. This 4.3-inch smartphone was considered “big” by 2010′s standards, but if you need a smaller-than-average smartphone you can’t get much better than this.

Phones to look forward to

These phones aren’t available yet, but we know they're on their way and we know we're anticipating them a great deal. Said to be out at some point this fall, let's take a look at two of  the most exciting devices on the horizon (which isn’t saying much, but work with me here).

LG G Flex

LG’s first smartphone with a virtually unbreakable display, the curvaceous LG G Flex is like a G2… except curvy. While some might not be moved or impressed by the unique contours of this thing, it’s still going to be a powerhouse for at least a few months. We’re not sure when to expect it, nor are we exactly sure where to expect it, but it’s coming.

Samsung Galaxy Round

Samsung has a curvy smartphone of their own coming, except its curve is more… weird. The Galaxy Round features a horizontal curve, which we guess is good for those who want a phone that can hug the contours of your backside more effectively. It remains to be seen if this unorthodox form factor will make people flock, but one thing’s for sure — it has our attention.

Oppo N1

This device has a lot of firsts attached to its name. It’s one of the first phones with a rotating camera, giving you a suitable camera for both front and rear facing shots. It’ll also be the first phone that will come with the ability to flash CyanogenMod out of the box. (There will also be a special edition of the device that comes with CyanogenMod pre-installed.) Its specs will include 2GB of RAM, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and more. December is the last known launch window.

Sony Xperia Z1 Mini

This small handset will be taking a serious crack at the DROID Mini’s crown once it launches. The 4.3 inch 720p Xperia Z1 Mini packs a Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, Bluetooth 4.0, a 2,300 mAh battery and more. Sony (or Sony Ericsson) has always been known for creating great “mini” phones, and it looks like the trend won’t stop whenever this thing launches. We should be seeing it in mere weeks.

Amazon’s Best Sellers

These phones are selling like hot cakes on Amazon. Note that these aren't necessarily Amazon's true best-sellers, but best sellers out of the ones we haven't already mentioned. Take a look and see if some of these other hot phones are worth your time and money:

  1. Samsung Galaxy S3
  2. LG Optimus G
  3. Samsung Galaxy Note 2
  4. LG Optimus G Pro
  5. Motorola DROID Ultra
  6. HTC One Mini
  7. Pantech Perception
  8. HTC EVO 4G LTE
  9. Sony Xperia Ion
  10. Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro

What say you?

And that’s a wrap! There were a lot of changes this month. You may agree with some, you may agree with all, or you may think this list is pretty much worthless. We don’t care which side of the line you stand on — we just want to hear your thoughts! Let them be heard in the comments section below. Here’s to a great forthcoming holiday season!

Ad code found in KitKat’s Dialer raises eyebrows but there’s no reason for alarm

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 06:36 PM PDT

Android kitkat 4.4 call id

It was one of the coolest new features of the new Android 4.4 KitKat update: Google’s brand new dialer app. While that may not sound very exciting at first, it’s the new dialer features that have our undies in a bunch.

Leveraging the power of Google Maps, the dialer not only pulls up contacts saved to your Google account, but phone numbers from local businesses in your area as well. So insanely useful, it was like combining the Yellow Pages and dialer into a single cohesive experience.

Android 4.4 KitKat Dialer

Last night, Google made the “stock ROM” for the Nexus 5 available, along with all the new apps therein. We were able to extract a handful of the new Android 4.4 KitKat apps, some of which we were even able to get up and running on our non-Nexus 5 devices. “Haxxors” and generally nosey Android fans began diving into some of these new apps, KitKat’s latest Dialer being one of them.

What was discovered was a line of code found inside the Dialer app that began raising some eyebrows. Here’s what was discovered:

<string name=”enable_disable_advertisements”>Advertisements</string>
<string name=”advertisements_enable”>Advertisements enabled</string>
<string name=”advertisements_disable”>Advertisements disabled</string>

From the looks of it, it’s easy to assume that some kind of advertisements would be making their way into the dialer, especially given the Dialer’s new Maps business listings search. This even lead to ArsTechnica’s Ron Amadeo to sate, “Google will show Ads in the KitKat Dialer” but they can be turned off (see enable/disable string).

After handing the app over our developer, he looked over it and found that this line of code wasn’t even new to KitKat. After searching for the code in past AOSP repos, he found that that it’s almost as old as Android itself, dating all the way back to Android 1.6. Yes, folks, Donut.

So while we suppose it’s possible for Google to add ads to the dialer in the future, this was simply some leftover code from Android’s past that failed to get cleaned up. There should be absolutely no reason for concern, ads are definitely not coming to your Dialer anytime soon.

UPDATE: Ah, looks like Amadeo updated his original post on Google+. Nice work.

Nexus 5 delayed several weeks for some, warns Google

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 02:49 PM PDT

Nexus 5 orders delayed

And just when we were about to pat Google on the back for a successfully — and surprisingly smooth — Nexus 5 launch, they have now posted the following update in regards to Nexus 5 orders:

“Order processing for Nexus 5 devices may take a little longer than usual, up to several weeks. If you ordered a Nexus 5 device, go to ‘My orders’ and click Info for the most up-to-date order status.”

If you’ve already received your shipping confirmation, it looks like you’re in the clear. As for the rest of you, well, you might have some sleepless nights ahead of you. Let’s cross our fingers this isn’t widespread, and only a minimal amount of orders will suffer from delayed processing.

Want to check the status of your order(s)? Head to the Play Store’s “My Orders” page and hope for the best.

Moto G leaked in a print ads, specs seemingly confirmed

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 01:57 PM PDT

Moto G leaked ad

During yesterday’s Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat hubbub, another device we’ve been tracking made it’s first unofficial appearance in a series of leaked print ads. You might remember the Moto G as the mysterious phone popping up on Motorola’s official site for a short time, or possibly when the name was trademarked several weeks ago.

Moto G by Motorola GSM Arena

Now, thanks to @evleaks and tipsters on GSMArena, the phone has allegedly been revealed, specs and all. In the ads, the G looks like the kid brother of the Moto X and according to previous leaks, the back cover might also be removable. Specs can be seen in one of the ads (also confirmed by @evleaks), showing:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro (1.5GHz)
  • 4.7-inch 720p display,
  • 8MP camera,
  • 1,950mAh battery
  • 8GB or 16GB internal storage varieties.

Mr. Leaks says the phone will be offered for free on contract, presumably for the 8GB model. While carrier or timing availability wasn’t mentioned, the holiday print ads already getting pictured in the wild leads us to wonder if it wont be much longer before Motorola finally makes the Moto G official.

Round-up: everything you need to know about the Nexus 5!

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 10:21 AM PDT

Boy, was yesterday a wild day. Google decided to straight out release the Nexus 5, with no announcement or warnings. It was all way too exciting and we were running around the office trying to cover all the news and details for you. What about today? Today we are suffering from what I will start calling a “Nexus hangover”.

We now have our heads back where they should be, though. We are all calm and relaxed, so it’s time to take a look back and examine everything we saw about the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat.

The sudden unveiling of the Nexus 5

nexus-5-picture

This has to be one of the weirdest launches in tech. There were no announcements or details from Google. We were literally about to start our weekly podcast when BOOM… the Nexus 5 is now available for purchase.

As it can be expected from a Nexus device, the Nexus 5 started selling out very quickly. We are sure many of you (us too) just went for it and bought it on first impulse. We can’t blame you, the phone is a beauty, with awesome specs and a price that is beat by none. What exactly are we getting for $349?Screen Shot 2013-10-31 at 3.12.29 PM

Nexus 5 specs

  • 5-inch display with 1920×1080 resolution
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon™ 800, 2.3GHz
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 8 megapixel rear camera, 1.3 megapixel front camera
  • Android 4.4 KitKat
  • 16GB / 32GB of internal storage
  • WiFi ac, NFC, and Bluetooth 4.0 LE
  • 2,300 mAh battery with wireless charging built-in
  • microUSB with SlimPort

Yes, the phone is not “the best” in terms of specs, but it is very capable! More so than some of the other $600+ devices. And for the price, you really can’t complain.

Finally – a Nexus device with a decent camera!

We have some sample images from the Nexus 5 and boy are things looking good! Nexus phones have never been popular for having quality cameras, so this comes as a great Halloween treat to all of us. Below you will find one of the images, you can check out the Nexus 5 image samples post to see more.

IMG_20131016_223412

Nexus 5 official accessories

You probably want to protect your investment with a case. Google has some nice ones for you, but they won’t be as affordable. We have a bumper case and a Quick Cover case, going for $35 and $50, relatively.

What carriers can I activate the Nexus 5 on?

We talked about this a bit in the podcast. A phone is really not much without service, and having nice options is always good. This is an unlocked device, so you can activate it with any GSM carrier of your choice. The “big guys” will be AT&T and T-Mobile.

Nexus 5What about CDMA carriers? After all, the phone does sport CDMA radios. Well, you can leave Verizon out of the picture here. Verizon will not support anything that doesn’t come from them. Unless Verizon releases a Nexus 5 (and there seem to be no plans for that), you will not be able to use the Nexus 5 in their network.

Now let’s go into the juicy stuff. The following news really threw me off my chair – you can purchase a Nexus 5 from the Play Store and activate it on Sprint! This is huge a huge move for a CDMA carrier. Such carriers usually keep things locked to their own devices, due to compatibility and support.

Why is Sprint allowing this? Chances are their own device is the same and they are just going easy on it. Sprint and T-Mobile will have the Nexus 5 available soon, so you can also get the devices straight from them.

Let’s talk Android 4.4 KitKAt

android-kitkat

Along with the Nexus 5 comes Android 4.4 KitKat. In many ways, software is much more important than hardware, so this could have been the biggest news for you. The improved Android version comes with some good updates, which you can read all about in our official Android 4.4 announcement article. You can also watch 56 minutes of video that will tell you all about Android 4.4 KitKat.

The biggest step that Android 4.4 takes is that it is optimized to run even on lower-end devices (only needs 512 MB of RAM to run). Now this doesn’t mean all of our old phones will be updated. That is based on the manufacturer and how they choose to spend their time and resources. All this means is the manufacturer CAN update lower-end phones if it wants.

Moto X video leak Hello Google NowMy favorite feature is the ability to launch Google Now via voice from the home screen. Simply say “OK Google” and you can start voice searching whatever your heart desires. This is not as awesome as Motorola’s always-listening features, but it’s cool nonetheless.

Other improvements include the new Hangouts app, which is not complete yet (needs Google Voice calling), but it does support SMS and MMS now. There is also Caller ID for unknown numbers (mainly to identify local businesses), built-in Cloud printing and more.

When will my phone get Android 4.4 KitKat?

nexus devices nexus 10 7 4If you don’t have a Nexus or Google Play Edition device, you will more than likely have to wait months before you get a taste of delicious KitKat. We know what devices Motorola is planning to update, as well as HTC, but we don’t know when. Now if you happen to be under Google’s wing, things are very different.

In fact, Nexus and Google Play Edition devices will be getting Android 4.4 within “a few weeks”. This includes the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition and HTC One Google Play Edition.

We suppose those with older Nexus devices are out of luck. Everything that is born has to die some day, guys. Who knows, maybe Google will update those older devices later!

Download the Android 4.4/Nexus 5 apps!

Excited about Android 4.4 KitKat but won’t be getting the Nexus 5? Maybe you want to get a taste of what the improved experience will be like, so we took the Android 4.4 factory image and took it all apart. The result? The APK files for the new apps and software!

Now, be warned that some of these apps won’t work. That or they have to be installed directly into system/apps, and even then they may crash. You have to know your way around. It’s kind of a hit or miss situation, but you can join the conversation in the articles’ comment sections to see how it is all working for others.

The most popular problem we found was that Voice Search was crashing when installed (from the Google Experience Launcher article). One of our readers found a quick way to fix it, but we are not sure it will work for everybody.

Here is the fix:

  • Long press the home screen, select Settings.
  • Select Voice.
  • Select Language to change the default.
  • Change to another language, I choose English – UK.
  • Hit Home.
  • Do a Google Search.
  • Repeat the first three steps.
  • Change back to English – US.

If this doesn’t work, you may have to have root access in order to make this work. The library file can be replaced if you have root access, which can fix the problem permanently. Or the problem can come back after a reboot. Like we said, it’s all hit or miss… and can get complicated.

Should I get the Nexus 5

We put together an awesome comparison post. It includes the Nexus 5 (of course) and other popular phones like the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the iPhone 5S. The Nexus 5 fairs very well against the big guys, but is it worth your hard-earned cash?

It depends. If you are looking to get a phone off-contract and your carrier of choice supports the device, we say HELL YEAH! You won’t get more bang for your buck. There is simply no better phone at the Nexus 5′s price range.

An Update For The World's Best Free Audio Recording Software

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 12:32 AM PDT

Last week saw the release of version 2.0.5 of Audacity, a free software product that lets you record audio to your PC or manipulate existing recordings. Whether your requirement is to edit an existing MP3 file, for example to increase its volume or remove clicks, or to record and edit live audio from a microphone or other input, Audacity will do all this and more. It's on a par with many of the professional packages as used by radio broadcasters and producers, yet it's available for free.

If you don't already use Audacity but you're into computer audio, it's well worth a look. If you already use it and love it, you'll want to upgrade for the latest new features and fixes.
