Android 4.4.1 coming soon to Nexus and Google Play edition devices [RUMOR]

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 05:20 PM PST

Phandroid 4.4 KitKat

It’s been about a month since Android 4.4 KitKat first dropped onto the scene. Since then, the update has had it’s fair share of hiccups, causing issues on some devices like the Nexus 4 that eventually lead to release of the KRT16S build.

What’s next? Well, we’ve seen reports of users having problems with Exchange being broken (kind of a big deal), and there was the whole Google Experience Launcher remaining exclusive to the Nexus 5. Well, perhaps 4.4.1 will fix some of these concerns. According to @LlabTooFeR on Twitter — an Android modder who often gets his hands on leaked software builds — Android 4.4.1 is already heading to the HTC One Google Play edition, coming in hot with build KOT49E.

Digging into Phandroid’s own analytics reports, we’ve seen a spike in devices visiting our site over the past few weeks, reportedly running Android 4.4.1…. and Android 4.6.7, and Android 9.9.9 (Android Upside-down Cake). Okay, so this is extremely easy to spoof, along with the location where these devices are allegedly coming from. Fun? Sure. Definitive proof? Not so much.

Android 4.1.1 site visits
In any case, we’ll put more weight in the words of @LlabTooFeR who’s more than often dead-on with this kind of stuff. It stands to reason if Google Play edition devices will soon receive Android 4.4.1, that means Nexus devices will also follow suit (likely even sooner). What changes would you like to see for 4.4.1?

Upcoming Google toolkit will help developers create Chrome apps that also run on Android (and iOS)

It looks like Google is preparing to release a toolkit that will soon allow developers create Chrome apps that extend, not only run on the desktop, but Android (and iOS) devices as well. The boys at The Next Web made the discovery after stumbling upon Mobile Chrome Apps repository on Github, revealing Google’s upcoming plan to effectively extend beyond the browser.

Google declined to comment on their upcoming plans, saying that while they’re not ready to make anything official just yet, developers are more than free to use their tools that were uncovered. Using the new toolkit, developers can modify, tweak, and test their apps for smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices. Once everything is running properly, these hybrid apps can immediately be published to the Google Play Store where you’ll be able to download and install them like any other app.

It looks like, for the time being, only Android 4.o+ devices will be supported, with an expected release as early as January of next year. We’ll keep our eyes peeled in the meantime developers can hit up the source link for more info on getting started with Chrome apps for mobile.

What’s the best Android tablet to buy as of December 2013?

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 03:54 PM PST

Earlier this week we talked about what the best Android phone to buy this month was, and now it’s time to go over the best Android tablets your hard-earned money can buy leading up to that glorious Christmas day. This space doesn’t move quite as fast as smartphones, but we’re about ready to head into what should be an interesting holiday season with a few new tablets leading the way.

5 – Nexus 10 by Samsung

The Nexus 10 is quite old, and is rumored to be supplanted by an updated offering at some point in the near future, but as it stands it’s still one of the better tablets to buy. A lot of that is on price and principal — who can say no to a Nexus device? And who can say no to a Nexus device with these specs for $400?

424093-nexus-10

The specs I’m referring to include a 10.055-inch 2560 x 1600 display, Exynos 5 Dual (which is an ARM Cortex-A15 dual-core chipset with Mali T604 graphics), 2GB of RAM, 16-32GB of internal storage, WiFi + MiMo, Bluetooth, NFC, and more. And the fact that it’s already on Android 4.4 KitKat should allow you to buy one of these bad boys with confidence.

4 – LG G Pad 8.3

lg-g-pad-8.3-3

LG’s G Pad 8.3 jumps to number four this month, and for good reason. Spending a bit more time with the tablet reveals LG really did get the whole “feels just right in your hands” thing just right. Ergonomics aside, the G Pad 8.3 is one fine tablet on all of its other merits, too, with a Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB of RAM, an 8.3-inch 1920 x 1200 display, 16GB of internal storage, a 5 megapixel camera and more. It looks great, too, which isn’t something we would have said about LG’s offerings from a couple of years ago.

3 – Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition

In our Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition review, Rob Jackson noted some pitfalls of the entirety of the experience, the biggest of which being a laggy user interface when flipping through MyMagazines or trying to use popup apps.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014

That was enough to keep it out of our first spot, but not nearly enough to kick it out of our top 5. The Note 10.1 2014 edition reads like a fantastic device on paper, with specs being comprised of the following:

  • 1.9GHz Exynos 5420 quad-core processor
  • 3GB of RAM.
  • 16GB or 32GB options for internal storage
  • 8MP rear camera
  • 2MP front facing camera
  • MicroUSB 2.0
  • MicroSD slot
  • 8,220 mAh battery and more

Samsung still has yet to address these issues with any sort of software upgrade, so it has taken a backseat to a couple of other worthy devices this month. If you just have to have the S Pen experience and don’t mind parting ways with $550, though, you can’t go wrong here.

2 – Amazon Kindle Fire HDX

The HDX line of Kindle Fire tablets is the latest in Amazon’s series. This changes the game up quite a bit by Amazon’s standards, a company whose modest first step into the tablet arena has since been bested with better offerings each year to follow. The HDX comes in 7-inch and 8.9-inch flavors, giving users a decent balance between screen real estate and portability.

Amazon Kindle Fire HDX

The Amazon Kindle Fire HDX includes 2560 x 1600 resolution, storage options of 16-64GB, 4G LTE, a quad-core 2.2GHz processor (likely a Snapdragon 800), and more. As we all know by now, though, it isn’t the specs Amazon is hoping will win your hearts.

It’s the deep integration with their various services, including Prime Instant Video, MP3, Cloud Storage, Kindle e-Books, the Amazon Appstore, and a whole lot more. Content is king in Amazon’s world, and it’s something they have been very good at for quite some time. This is definitely one of the better buys of the holiday season, especially for a starting price point of $229.

1 – Nexus 7 2013

This 7-inch ASUS-made wonder slides in at the number 1 spot thanks to that nice 1920 x 1200 resolution (323 ppi), quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset clocked at 1.5GHz, 2GB of RAM, 16-32GB of internal storage, 5 megapixel rear camera, 2 megapixel front camera, dual-band WiFi N, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and more.

New Nexus 7 hand wm

Google really does make it a bit unfair with their willingness to throw profits aside and offer this device up for dirt cheap, but that doesn’t make us feel reluctant or guilty for awarding the Nexus 7 2013 the top spot anyway. Oh, and did we mention you can get KitKat on this thing?

Honorable Mentions

Amazon Kindle Fire HD

It’s not quite as powerful as the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7 or 8.9, but the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD still holds its own where it counts. Amazon couldn’t care less about the profit from device sales here, though, which is why it’s so cheap at a starting price of just $140. As with the HDX, it’s all about apps and services for Amazon. Specs include 1280 x 800 resolution, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 8-16GB of internal storage, 10 hours of battery life and more.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0

Samsung’s Note series has become the go-to for performance and features in the tablet space, so the more weildy of the bunch — the Note 8.0 — deserves a bit of recognition in the top 5. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0′s HD resolution and quad-core chipset are quite nice, and that all-important S-Pen functionality pushes this as one of the better “small” tablets to consider at the point of sale.

ASUS Transformer Pad TF701T

This is the latest product from ASUS that will allow you to transform your tablet into a netbook. The Transformer Pad TF701 is a 10.1-inch 2560 x 1600 device with NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 processor on board. This powerhouse also includes a 5 megapixel rear camera, a 1.2 megapixel front camera, HDMI-out and more. And when you dock the tablet inside the dock, you’ll get a combined 17 hours of battery life (which is much more than any of today’s Netbooks can claim).

Tablets to look forward to

Here are just a few tablets to look forward to in the weeks and months to come. None of them are available for purchase yet, and some aren’t even official, but it’ll give you a good idea of what to expect once that ever-difficult purchasing decision arises this holiday seasons.

ASUS Padfone Infinity

This marvelous phone/tablet combo pack is set to launch sometime soon. ASUS was one of the first companies to make our “use a powerful phone as the guts of a tablet” dreams come true, and now they’ve gone and outdone themselves with the announcement of the Padfone Infinity.

the-new-padfone-infinity-hands-on

The phone bit includes a 5-inch 1080p HD Super IPS display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB of internal storage with microSD, 13 megapixel rear camera with a 2 megapixel front camera, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi N, 2,400mAh battery and more.

Dock the phone into the rear of a device that has a 10.1-inch HD display and a huge battery, and you’ve got yourself one of the most powerful tablets, as well. Sounds pretty damned good to me, and worth keeping an eye out for once ASUS makes these available.

Motorola DROID tablets

Motorola has a tablet or two launching soon. We’re not sure what they are. We’re not sure how they’ll look. We’re not even sure when we’ll be seeing them. All we know is that they’ve confirmed some tablets are in the works, and that one of them will most certainly be headed straight for Verizon’s DROID lineup. With the great work they’ve done with the Moto X and the latest DROID phones, Motorola definitely gets a good deal of our attention.

What say you?

And that’ll do it for our list of the best Android tablets to buy. Things should be even more interesting by the time we put the next installment out, but take some time to go over the list for December, and think about where you stand on it. Feel free to disagree — we all have our own thoughts and opinions about these sorts of things, so you won’t be hurting our feelings! We want to hear all about it in the comments section below, so have at it!

PS: don’t forget that you can talk all about these tablets, and more, over at AndroidForums.com. Be sure to make an account and join the millions of folks currently driving some very healthy discussion over there.

HTC One successor could launch as early as February, according to UK Judge

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 02:01 PM PST

HTC One Google Edition vs Sense

Rumors surrounding the followup to the HTC One have circling the net these past weeks. With the future of HTC on somewhat shaky ground, some have been wondering on the timing of such a sequel — could HTC be planning to release a full fledged sequel sooner than the usual 12 month time frame? Or might a sequel get pushed back down the calendar in order to give the HTC One Max and One Mini a better chance to gain additional market share?

Revealed in the aftermath of HTC’s legal battle with Nokia (over, what else, but patents), some newly discovered court documents are giving us a better idea on what HTC could have planned. According to a ruling published by High Court Judge Richard Arnold, a followup to the HTC One could be released in the UK as early as February or March of next year.

While the 1 year anniversary of the original HTC One (March) sounds like a no brainer, you may remember that the device was actually delayed in most parts of the globe due to supply constraints. If HTC could manage to churn out a sequel as early as February — getting the jump on the Samsung Galaxy S5 — it might put them in a better spot than last year’s fiasco.

It should be noted that this information still isn’t 100% solid and like most things corporate, is subject to change. But given this judge was presented with evidence not disputed by HTC, that ultimately lead to his ruling, he’d know better than anyone. For those sitting on an upgrade and are looking for a new smartphone this holiday season, you now have a new date worth considering.

Highly anticipated VSCO Cam now available for Android (Spoiler: it’s awesome)

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 12:39 PM PST

Processed with VSCOcam with s1 preset

VSCO Cam sample after using a picture taken with my Sony NEX 5R

We gave you guys the quick spiel about VSCO Cam yesterday. A powerful set of photo editing tools, VSCO Cam looks to take your Android photography to that next level. Using a sleek minimal interface (more akin to Windows Phone than Android) users can take photos from within the app, apply professional grade filters (not that kiddie Instagram stuff), or further tweak photos using the usual exposure/saturation/contrast/sharpen/etc..

VSCO Cam Android screenies

It’s in VSCO Cam’s filters or “Presets”, where the app really shines. Off the bat, VSCO Cam makes available 10 of the more popular filters and for most shooters, this will be enough. Those who really enjoy taking photos and tweaking them will probably look to purchasing their Preset packs, categorized by their different effects (desaturated, instant, portrait, vivid, etc.). Right now, all 16 packs with 38 Presets can be purchased for only $6 (about 50% off and a no-brainer for Android photogs).

VSCO Cam Android Preset packs

Images snapped can be shared to Twitter, Facebook and more directly through the app. Images taken with stock camera found on your Android device can also be imported into the VSCO Cam library using the normal Android share function inside the Gallery app.

VSCO Grid — where users can upload their VSCO photo collection and share their photos with others — is said to be coming to mobile in the future. Different from the usual social networks, Grid is simply meant for sharing beautiful photos, not getting trapped in the commenting system featured in social networks like Instagram. My own personal VSCO Grid can be found here.

VSCO Cam Android settings

There is still a key feature missing from VSCO Cam on some Android devices compared to its iOS counterpart. Right now, only a few devices can 2-finger tap when using the camera to separate focus and exposure. This is apparently due to hardware limitations, and not an oversight on VSCO’s part.

Overall, we though the app performed great, although the UI — while nice and clean — was a bit too minimal, with no text or hints as to what the icons represented. Also, it wouldn’t have killed VSCO Cam to feature a swipable side menu (which would follow Android’s design guidelines), instead of having to tap the icon to access other settings.

Ready to get started on your photo journey? You can download VSCO Cam for free right now via the Google Play link below, just in time for the Holidays.

HTC One Mini sales banned in the UK following Nokia injunction

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 10:53 AM PST

HTC and Nokia are in the middle of a patent spat right now, with the former being accused of violating the latter’s EP 0 998 024 patent in the UK. The patent details a “modular structure for a transmitter and a mobile station,” which specifically ties into the HAAC microphones HTC has been using in many of their latest phones.

HTC One and HTC One mini

The High Courts of England have found that HTC has infringed on the patent, and has such granted Nokia with a temporary injunction on sales in the UK for devices which violate the documents. HTC was able to get a stay of injunction on their 4.7-inch flagship HTC One while they go through the appeals process, but they weren’t so lucky with other phones caught in the crossfire.

The HTC One Mini has suffered an immediate ban, putting HTC in a tough spot as they await a potentially lengthy appeals process to be carried out. HTC won’t just sit on their hands while they wait for the courts to make a decision, though — they’re looking to address the issue with the help of their chipset vendors as soon as possible.

We’re not sure how long it would take for them to go from research and development on a new component to full production of new models of these smartphones, but it’s going to have to be something that is prioritized if they want to make sure unit sales for all their latest products aren’t affected. We’re still in the early days of this thing, but we’ll be keeping an eye on it to see which path HTC is forced to take from here. Read on for HTC’s full statement to the press on the matter.

HTC is pleased by the decision of the High Court of England and Wales to stay an injunction against certain chipsets, including those in our flagship HTC One, pending the outcome of our appeal against the validity and infringement of Nokia’s EP 0 998 024  patent.  Whilst the Court also granted an injunction that affects other third party chipsets, we have filed urgent application to appeal.  In the meantime, we are working with our chip suppliers to explore alternative solutions . As always, HTC’s primary focus is on supporting our customers and ensuring minimal disruption to them and our business. Rest assured that our award winning HTC One handset will be available as usual.

Samsung Galaxy S5 could use metal after all

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 10:01 AM PST

samsung-logo

Trying to figure out when Samsung would be ballsy enough to make the switch to a metal chassis for their phones hasn’t been the easiest of tasks. The company has been rumored to do it for the past two renditions of the Samsung Galaxy S4, and we’ve been disappointed each time. We saw them give it a go inside the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active, but that particular device wasn’t sold as widely as the original Galaxy S4.

According to new reports, Samsung could finally be ready to make the jump to metal. No, seriously this time… I think. The report comes out of Korean outlet EMSOne, who claims that a Taiwanese company named “Catcher” has been tapped as the provider of the metal for this undertaking. They will be the faucet for the first 10 to 30 million units, according to the report. BYD out of China and Ju Teng out of Taiwan are said to provide the remaining units.

It’s no secret Samsung has been a bit hesitant to move away from the plastic they know and love, because it’s been working for them for quite some time (to the tune of them being the world’s top Android smartphone manufacturer by a long shot). It’s understandable that they’ve been taking an “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” approach all these years, but we’d be lying if we said we weren’t ready for something new.

The company tried their hand at something a little different with the Galaxy Note 3, a phone that features a faux leather backplate. It makes for a nice, different look, but it still isn’t the metal piece of wonder we’ve all been dreaming of. Recent rumors say we should be seeing Samsung starting mass production as early as January, so it shouldn’t be long before we find out if they really are ready to move on from the fantastic plastic train.

Be sure to keep AmazonSmile in mind for your next purchase if this sounds like something you want to take part in. If you want to take advantage of the $20 donation opportunity, Amazon’s giving you until Sunday. Go forth, charitable ones!

Meizu MX4G rumored to have ridiculous 5.5-inch 2560 x 1536 display

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 08:09 AM PST

meizu_logo_640_large_verge_medium_landscape

Display technology is growing at very rapid rates, and 2014 should bring us many interesting breakthroughs. Meizu looks to be the next player to make some noise in that space, with their “Meizu MX4G” rumored to be coming with a 5-5inch 2560 x 1536 display. That gives us a pixel density of about 542ppi.

Some might argue that the human eye wouldn’t even be able to make having such technology worth it, with many folks believing anything far beyond 300ppi is overkill. Regardless, it’d be exciting to see just how sharp this display looks up against some of the 1080p beasts of today.

We don’t know much else about this phone, though the “4G” in its name does tell us we can expect speeds faster than 3G. But with such a high resolution and Meizu’s reputation for not holding back, we suspect we won’t be disappointed once the full details come to light.

Google fixes Glass Store, offers select Explorers a chance to buy second Glass unit

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 07:03 AM PST

It looks like we’re about to see even more Google Glass units in circulation soon. Google has contacted select Glass Explorers inviting them to buy a second pair of Google Glass for themselves or a friend. This is different from the extra invites program, where Glass Explorers could invite up to three friends to buy a pair of Glass.

glass-explorer-purchase

The price tag hasn’t changed, folks — it’s still $1,500 — but if you or someone you know have that much money and don’t know what to do with it, this would be an interesting buy. For your money, you’ll be treated to the latest prototype, which will soon support prescription lenses, and comes with a connection to use a mono earbud for improved unit audio.

Speaking of those earbuds, Google is reminding folks who had trouble accessing their Glass store that accessories are available to purchase. You can get the mono earbud for $50, stereo earbuds (designed specifically for Glass, and with interchangeable color caps) for $85, as well as replacement pouches, charging / data cables, and the clear shield attachment. Be sure to check your email if you’re a Glass Explorer to see if you’ve received another purchase code. You can find the full email being sent to Glass Explorers below.

As you might have discovered, some Explorers who purchased Glass over the phone weren't able to access our store. You weren't missing anything before but we have a few new goodies in there now, so here’s a code that you can use to get started:

Purchase Now

For future reference, your code is: REDACTED

We're so grateful that you've been with us as a Glass Explorer since the beginning. So, in addition to the new earbuds that you'll find in our store, we'd also like to give you the option to purchase a second Glass for yourself or for a friend, as many of you have requested.

CyanogenMod 10.2 (Android 4.3) hits stable status, KitKat work begins

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 05:52 AM PST

504px-CyanogenMod_Cid.svg

The CyanogenMod team has announced that they have finally hit stable status for CyanogenMod 10.2, which is the release based on Android 4.3. While many of you have been enjoying release candidates and milestone releases for quite some time, this stable release means the device is ready for public consumption, and the CM team will shift focus to the next major version of Android (Android 4.4 KitKat, in case you’ve been under a rock the past month or so).

The team says the stable release will come to all the devices officially supported in release candidate 1, though there’s a chance more could be added (whether officially or unofficially) down the line. Despite the team’s new focus on Android 4.4 KitKat and CyanogenMod 11, they have reassured us that security patches and bug fixes for major issues in CM 10.2 will be on the way.

With that, we’re being told that folks will have something to flash “very soon,” whether you’re a fan of super stable work or bleeding edge experiments. That’s as close as we’re going to get to an ETA until the team is ready to announce the first bits of release information, so don’t clog their inbox up with questions asking for a release date. Be sure to grab the latest GAPPs package while you’re downloading your stable CM 10.2, and always remember to back your data up before flashing — it never hurts to be too safe.

Motorola updates us on failed Cyber Monday deal – will run again on Weds at noon and next Mon

Posted: 02 Dec 2013 06:18 PM PST

Motorola Moto X DSC00701

It’s been roughly about 12 hours since Motorola was supposed to begin their big Cyber Monday sale on off-contract Moto Xs. Because of the increase of traffic, the site went down and the $150-off sale never actually got off the ground (although Developer Editions were selling at the discounted price).

Here we are, in the wee evening hours and Motorola is finally back with an update. In a Tweet that went out just a few moments ago, Motorola is now promising that if they can’t get everything up and running by 9:30pm ET (about 15 minutes from now), they’ll offer the same deal at noon (ET) on Wednesday, then again next Monday, December 9th but with double the amount of devices available.

Sounds like a better deal to us.

UPDATE: Motorola has thrown in the towel. Rather than go live tonight, they’ve announced that the Motomaker deal will resume on Wednesday at noon ET and again on Monday, doubling your chances to pick up a customized Moto X for $350. Happy?

Android versions chart updated for the month of December, Android 4.4 KitKat debuts at 1.1%

Posted: 02 Dec 2013 05:30 PM PST

Android Platform versions Dec 2013

It’s that time of the month again! Android’s platform distribution numbers have officially been updated with the latest numbers for the month of December, 2013. Not just stats for Android fans to praise (or haters to scoff at), this is a tool used by Android developers to track a specific firmware’s grown or decline, deciding whether building their apps to support an older firmware is even worth their time.

This month we have Android 4.4 KitKat making it’s debut in the charts, account for a whopping 1.1% of Android devices that have recently checked into the Google Play Store within the last 7 days. If you expected that number to be a little higher, you weren’t the only one. It appears that even with all these Android devices recently being updated to KitKat — Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 7 (2013), Motorola Moto X, HTC One Developer Edition and unlocked models — they were little more than a drop in Android’s bucket. Guess it’s going to take Samsung updating their devices to KitKat in order to see a bigger impact.

We’re still hopeful that with KitKat being the lightest version of Android yet, we’ll begin to see more low-end devices launch with 4.4 out-of-the-box (and not Gingerbread). As for the rest of the numbers, Jelly Bean grew to 54.5% (up from last month’s 52.1%), while Ice Cream Sandwich dropped to 18.6% (compared to 19.8% last month). We’re still seeing the slow decline of Gingerbread, dropping from 26.3% in November, to 24.1% this month (most likely due to aging hardware finally kicking the bucket). Ha.

Google Play Music officially comes to Google Glass

Posted: 02 Dec 2013 04:00 PM PST

Google Play Music Google Glass

Savvy Google Glass Explorers have been using Google Play Music on their Glass for about a month thanks to manually installing the Google Music APK via ADB. Shortly after this method became public, Google announced that in the coming weeks an official method for using Google Play Music on Glass would be made available. That day is today.

To get the official Google Play Music Glassware, head on over to your MyGlass app and activate it there. If you jumped the gun and sideloaded the Google Play Music APK, you’ll need to uninstall it before activating the official app. To uninstall the old app, hook your Glass up to a computer with working ADB, and simply run the command: adb uninstall com.google.android.music. That’s it.

One of the day’s better Cyber Monday deals was accessory manufacturer TYLT and them offering 50% off their entire online store with coupon code: 50off_ty!t. Everything from cases, to chargers, and backpacks are fair game (up to a maximum discount of $100 per customer). Needless to say, TYLT’s website got hammered by the stampede of online shoppers looking to capitalize on such a great deal, clogging up checkouts and leaving shoppers walking away from the site empty handed.

But TYLT wants to make things right. According to a prompt that now appears when visiting the site, whether you knew about the deal or not, you can now visit this link here, to enter your email and reserve the deal for another day.

What’s the best Android phone to buy as of December 2013?

Posted: 02 Dec 2013 02:46 PM PST

We’re right in the thick of this Holiday season, and there are sure to be a ton of you who are looking to upgrade to their next smartphone. There are a lot of choices out there that can make any Christmas merry, but what’s the cream of the crop? It’s our best phones list for December 2013, the last one you’ll be able to reference before deciding on your Christmas purchases for the year. Let’s get into it!

5 – HTC One

HTC One rocks 2

HTC One’s big brother One Max isn’t on this list, but that’s because it offers nearly nothing over the more pocketable 4.7-inch version. The HTC One is still a fine phone by this year’s standards. The HTC One is HTC’s main focus for the year, so it was no surprise that the company was able to deliver a KitKat upgrade for the unlocked and developer editions in a timely manner.

It’ll take a while longer for it to make its way to carrier-branded versions, but the fact that HTC only has 3 main devices to support this year makes us hopeful that it won’t take long to get everyone up and running on the latest and greatest.

4 – Motorola Moto X

The Moto X spent a ton of time on our runner-up list, but it’s about time it gets graduated back to top 5 status. In fact, it’s done so by leap-frogging the HTC One that once dominated this list. The Moto X’s specs still pale in comparison to the One, but we’ve always given it props for its unique features such as Touchless Controls and Active notifications.

Motorola Moto X Boot animation DSC00738

So what warranted a two spot jump? Because KitKat, that’s what. Motorola was the first OEM to deliver Android 4.4 KitKat to a non-Nexus device. The Moto X even beat out a couple of Nexus devices, which made us award tons of brownie points to the Illinois-based company. Software support is always an important factor in any smartphone purchasing decision, and Motorola’s haste in bringing KitKat to the Moto X is worth a lot more than most people think.

3 – Samsung Galaxy Note 3

galaxy-note-3-multiwindow

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 did enough to maintain its throne at the number 3 spot for a second straight month. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM and a 13 megapixel camera and more will always keep our interests piqued, as no other phone currently provides this same level of power in nearly every spec category there is to consider.

2 – LG G2

lg-g2-6

The LG G2 retains its second spot in the list, as it’s still one of the better purchase decisions you can make in this day and age. It’s expensive, but you get a lot for your hard-earned dollars. A 5.2-inch 1080p HD display, a Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 13 megapixel camera and more make sure of that.

1 – Nexus 5 by LG

nexus-5-picture

We weren’t sure where the Nexus 5 would end up after we had some quality time to use it, but we’re still leaning toward this being the best pound-for-pound, dollar-for-dollar smartphone option on the market. We won’t lie — there are some quirks and other minor nuances keeping us from being totally in love with the Nexus 5. Battery life could be better, the speakers could be better, and the camera could be better, but for a starting price point of $350 we’re not sure there’s much room to complain about the rest of the spec sheet. That list includes a Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM and more.

Runner-ups

  1. Samsung Galaxy S4 - This marks the first time the Galaxy S4 slips out of the top 5. It’s still a great phone, but we’re just about ready to see what’s in store with the Galaxy S5.
  2. Motorola DROID Maxx — Think Moto X, except with two full days of battery life, a bigger display and sweet Kevlar back-coated goodness.
  3. Sony Xperia Z1 — Sony’s “Ultra” variant of the Z is a bit too much for our tastes, but the Z1 is still a fine device. We wish Sony would find a way to chop that bezel down, though.
  4. Oppo N1 - Decent phone with decent specs, but a swivel camera isn’t enough for us to give it a higher spot in the standings.
  5. Motorola Moto G - $179 off-contract. ‘Nuff said.

Phones to look forward to

These phones aren’t available yet, but we know they're on their way and we know we're anticipating them a great deal. Said to be out at some point this fall, let's take a look at two of  the most exciting devices on the horizon (which isn’t saying much, but work with me here).

LG G Flex

LG’s first smartphone with a virtually unbreakable display, the curvaceous LG G Flex is like a G2… except curvy. While some might not be moved or impressed by the unique contours of this thing, it’s still going to be a powerhouse for at least a few months. We’re not sure when to expect it, nor are we exactly sure where to expect it, but it’s coming.

Samsung Galaxy Round

Samsung has a curvy smartphone of their own coming, except its curve is more… weird. The Galaxy Round features a horizontal curve, which we guess is good for those who want a phone that can hug the contours of your backside more effectively. It remains to be seen if this unorthodox form factor will make people flock, but one thing’s for sure — it has our attention.

Sony Xperia Z1 Mini

This small handset will be taking a serious crack at the DROID Mini’s crown once it launches. The 4.3 inch 720p Xperia Z1 Mini packs a Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, Bluetooth 4.0, a 2,300 mAh battery and more. Sony (or Sony Ericsson) has always been known for creating great “mini” phones, and it looks like the trend won’t stop whenever this thing launches. We should be seeing it in mere weeks.

Amazon’s Best Sellers

These phones are selling like hot cakes on Amazon. Note that these aren't necessarily Amazon's true best-sellers, but best sellers out of the ones we haven't already mentioned. Take a look and see if some of these other hot phones are worth your time and money:

  1. Samsung Galaxy Note 2
  2. Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini
  3. Samsung Galaxy Mega
  4. Samsung Galaxy S3
  5. HTC One Mini
  6. HTC One Max
  7. Motorola DROID Mini
  8. Motorola DROID Ultra
  9. Casio G’zOne Commando
  10. Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro

What say you?

And that’s a wrap! There were a lot of changes this month. You may agree with some, you may agree with all, or you may think this list is pretty much worthless. We don’t care which side of the line you stand on — we just want to hear your thoughts! Let them be heard in the comments section below. Don’t forget that some of these great devices are on sale for Cyber Monday today! Be sure to find some great deals in our roundup post here.

VSCO Cam coming to Android tomorrow, takes your smartphone photography to new heights

Posted: 02 Dec 2013 12:15 PM PST

After months of beta testing, the coveted VSCO Cam camera app is just about ready to be released into the Play Store. Launching tomorrow, VSCO Cam — which has seen incredible success on iOS — allows Android users to take their smartphone photography to the next level, by providing a variety of professional filters and photo editing tools.

Photo editing is quite literally what VSCO does for a living. Specializing in photo editing add-ons for Lightroom and Aperture, VSCO has somehow managed to inject that same formula into a mobile app for your smartphone. When it hits Google Play tomorrow, VSCO Cam will come with 10 Presets (filters), and Tools (photo editing features), with 38 additional custom Presets available via in-app purchases.

Shots all taken using VSCO Cam for Android (click for larger view)

Unfortunately, it looks like only a handful of Android 4.0+ devices may be compatible with VSCO Cam at launch, and while none were specifically mentioned in official announcement, the VSCO team has been actively testing the app on more popular devices like the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One, and Nexus 5 back when it was still in private beta.

Update: VSCO says (see comments below) the app will, in fact, support over 2,000 Android 4.0+ devices when it goes live in the Play Store. That’s a whole lotta Androids.

I couldn’t be more excited. If you’re anything like me and love to share photos with friends/family, I think you’re going to love VSCO Cam when it officially arrives on the Google Play Store tomorrow. Want to learn more about VSCO Cam? Their own 15-minute walkthrough video can be found on their blog here.

NVIDIA SHIELD December update brings improved controls, 1080p@60FPS in console mode and more

Posted: 02 Dec 2013 11:53 AM PST

NVIDIA SHIELD hands on

The NVIDIA Shield is getting yet another huge upgrade that you should want to get your hands on ASAP. The biggest change you’ll find here is the ability to play in Console Mode at a full 1080p and 60 frames per second (whereas the October upgrade first brought 720p at 60FPS). The list of games compatible in each of these console modes is different, but NVIDIA has a nice list of games to start. They include the following:

  • Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
  • Batman: Arkham Origins
  • Battlefield 4
  • BioShock Infinite
  • Borderlands 2
  • Crysis 3
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

And NVIDIA promises more will be added on a weekly basis, so you can expect that list to expand quite fast. You can find a full list of both 720p and 1080p games that can be played at 60FPS in console mode here.

This upgrade also improves controller mapping, which allows you to map buttons to specific touch-screen gestures to make almost any game compatible with the device’s hardware buttons. This functionality has been extended to gyroscope emulation as well, so games which require motion-based gestures can now be played without an issue.

You’ll also find new fine-tuned analog stock controls that allows you to bind the left stick to body movement and the right stick to camera movement for FPS titles such as Mass Effect Infiltrator. Finally, NVIDIA has added the option to have the Android status bar automatically hidden — simply swipe down from the top to bring it up whenever you need it. You’ll want to head to Settings –> About SHIELD –> System Updates on your device and hit the “Check Now” button for the download.

Tegra 4-powered HP Slate 8 Pro and HP Slate 7 Extreme now available from Best Buy

Posted: 02 Dec 2013 11:43 AM PST

HP Slate 8 Pro 7 Extreme

HP’s all new Tegra 4-powered Android tablet line is now available at Best Buy. Officially unveiled back in September, holiday shoppers perusing Best Buy’s site will find the HP Slate 7 Extreme and HP Slate 8 Pro retailing for $200 and $330, respectively.

The HP Slate 8 Pro features a familiar iPad Mini aspect ratio, carrying a 7.98-inch display with 1600×1200 resolution, 8MP rear camera/2MP front facing camera, 1GB DDR3 RAM, micro SD card slot, micro HDMI out, Beats Audio, and again — powered by a powerful NVIDIA Tegra 4 quad-core processor.

The HP Slate 7 Extreme is the more “affordable” out of the two, based on NVIDIA’s reference platform carrying a 7-inch 1280×800 resolution display, 1GB DDR3 RAM, 5MP rear/.3MP front facing cameras, micro SD card slot, stereo “front firing” speakers, and a passive stylus.

HP Slate 7 Extreme ($200) at Best Buy

Both tablets are running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and sound like they offer a good amount of bang for the buck. Right now, Best Buy is offering free shipping for orders over $25, but — at least in my area — the 7 Extreme appears to be sold out. Anyone thinking about getting one of HP’s new tabs?

Nike might have a new smart watch coming, but will Android users have reason to care?

Posted: 02 Dec 2013 09:12 AM PST

With Nike being one of the first big names to tackle the wearable space with their Nike FuelBand fitness bracelet, you had to imagine the company would have plans to test out the smart watch market that’s beginning to take off. DigiTimes is reporting that is indeed the case, with the outlet saying Nike is looking to bring their own product out in the first half of 2014.

It’s easy to assume that Nike will take the fitness angle with their smart watch, utilizing the same vitality sensors from the FuelBand and giving you an even more comprehensive suite of workout-related features. We’re not sure how far beyond that they’ll go.

nike-fuelband-650x432

But the biggest question isn’t what they’ll be doing and how they’ll be doing it. Rather, it’s the “who” they’ll be doing it with that we’re more concerned about. In case you didn’t know, Nike still does not support Android-based devices with its FuelBand product, giving iOS users the exclusive rights to that accessory. Some people have been maddened by it, while others — like me — scratch their heads to figure out why Nike would look to alienate a fan base that has helped Android take up nearly 80% of worldwide sales in recent months.

While Nike’s VP of Digital Sport Stefan Olander would try and convince you that Nike’s reason for leaving Android users out of the FuelBand experience is noble, we have a striking suspicion that isn’t the case. Here’s his original explanation, courtesy of The Next Web:

nike-kit-box-2As we're looking forward, for us it's really about making sure we have a great experience. We have nothing against Android. Our running app [Nike+ Running] is on both iOS and Android, and we have learned a lot from that – at the end of the day, you really do get reach. But for us it's quality first, scale second.

Olander continued by saying that Bluetooth LE is relatively new, and thus its stability isn’t guaranteed across so many different platforms and devices. That might be a valid point, and with Apple’s closed, tried and true ecosystem it certainly does lend itself toward making sure most or all users are treated to a satisfactory experience, but times are a-changing.

Many of the top OEMs are building Bluetooth LE support into their phones, and Android has taken the first steps necessary to support the technology at its core as of Android 4.3. While such a vast and varied ecosystem still poses a problem for Nike, it won’t be long before their “lack of Bluetooth LE” excuse becomes a big pot of bologna.

So the question for this smart watch will be rather simple: what would keep this watch away from Android users? If it’s not the lack of Bluetooth LE support, then perhaps it’s laziness on Nike’s part. And if it’s not laziness, perhaps the fact that they’re in bed with Apple is a key factor in making sure they only support iOS. If, and when, this smart watch makes its way to market it’ll be much easier to get a beeline on Nike’s true motives.

Samsung offers the Galaxy Note 3 in three new seductive color options

Posted: 02 Dec 2013 07:48 AM PST

galaxy-note-3-colors

Samsung is adding even more color options to the already sizable list available for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. In addition to traditional colors like Jet Black and Classic White, and the smashing Blush Pink, you will soon be able to grab a Galaxy Note 3 in Rose Gold White, Rose Gold Black, and Merlot Red.

The former two options bring us traditional white and black front and back plates, but gives us a fake-gold trim on the sides of the device. It’s a subtle effect, but looks quite nice. Merlot Red changes things up a bit with a deep wine-colored back plate and front chassis, along with a matching S-Pen.

We reckon the phone is identical to the rest of the pack otherwise, though, with its 5.7-inch 1080p HD display, Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM, USB 3.0, 13 megapixel camera and more. Samsung didn’t give us any details as to where and when you would find these devices in specific regions, but we imagine your carrier of choice will let those details be known should they ever decide to offer them for sale. Have a look at the full family above.

online savings

Black Friday has come and gone, but as you might already know the deals don’t stop there. Cyber Monday has become more of a big deal with each passing year, and there are a ton of great deals to be had this fine Monday morning. We’ve done a quick roundup of some of the few Android device and app deals we’ve come across. Here’s the quick shortlist that we’ll be updating as the day goes on:

Devices

Apps, games and the Google Play Store

Accessories

  • You can get the Pebble smart watch for $20 off today only.
  • 50%-off everything at TYLT, maximum discount of $100 per customer. [TYLT]

It’s easy to miss a thing or two with so many different components in this large Android ecosystem, but be sure to tip us off to more great deals we might have missed in the comments section below. We’ll be updating this post throughout the day with the best deals we can find, so be sure to check back periodically!

[Update]: The hottest deal in town — which is Motorola’s Moto X for $150 off — seems to be inaccessible by most people. Motorola’s servers are getting hammered, and understandably so. The company addressed the issues in a statement made on Twitter:

Our website is down due to traffic & we’re working quickly to restore it. Watch here for updates & for when our Cyber Monday deal starts.

Be sure to follow Motorola on Twitter to find out when you’ll be able to get back on and try again.

Official FIFA app crosses into the Google Play Store in time for the 2014 World Cup

Posted: 02 Dec 2013 05:55 AM PST

fifa app

We’re just a few short days away from the Final Draw of FIFA’s 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the football event that pits the globe’s top countries against each other for the coveted championship every four years. The prestigious event is sure to have many fans and followers, and FIFA’s making it easy for fans to follow on the go with a brand new official app.

The Android version of the official FIFA app is now sitting in the Google Play Store for free. The app will not only serve as a definitive source of information for the big tourney, but will also be a one-stop shop for all things FIFA. News, videos, rankings and more will keep you in tune with the many leagues and football clubs around the world.

A quick stroll through the app reveals an experience that is breathtakingly refreshing. Many sports organizations tend to completely disregard the “rules” of Android app design, but FIFA nails it right on the head with their official app. It conforms to the latest Android design guidelines, including the new-style sliding drawer and a card-based UI. It’s a sad state of affairs when bad app design is so common that you have to applaud something like this, but we’ll do it anyway. Find the free download in the Google Play Store.

Oppo N1 available in the US unlocked for $599 December 10th

oppo-n1-featured-LARGE

Wondering when you can get your hands on the Oppo N1? Wonder no longer — the arrival date is December 10th, according to the official Google+ account of the Chinese company. Coming in at $599.99 unlocked, the Oppo N1 is the first phone to feature official support for flashing CyanogenMod ROMs. The deal was struck when CyanogenMod went corporate and formed their grassroots ROM movement into a legitimate business.

The Oppo N1 features a 5.9-inch 1080p HD display and Qualcomm’s 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor. It also has 2GB of RAM, either 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, WiFi N, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, a 3,600 mAh battery and more.

Its most intriguing component is the camera sitting on top, which is a 13 megapixel sensor that can swivel. This means you can use the same camera for rear and front photos and video, giving you one of the most powerful front-facing cameras we’ve ever seen on a phone.

Our official review of the phone has all the deets you’re longing for, so be sure to get over there to see if this phone is worth the $600 they’ll be asking for. This link should get you on the right path once December 10th rolls around if you decide you want to buy one.

This Tiny 4-In-1 File Explorer Makes Moving And Copying Files Simple

Posted: 02 Dec 2013 01:59 AM PST

The standard way to move or copy files and folders in Windows is to use Windows Explorer. But there's a fundamental flaw in its design which Microsoft consistently seems to ignore. You open Explorer and select the files you want to move or copy and then, well, what exactly? You either have to open another instance of Explorer, or move within the open one, in order to paste the stuff you just selected. It works, but it's messy and complicated. And Windows Explorer, like the rest of Windows, is often too big and complicated for performing small tasks.

All of which is why I rather like an Explorer-like program called Q-Dir. It's free, it's a tiny download of around 0.5 MB, it's portable, and it's malware-free according to VirusTotal and Web Of Trust.

LG G2 to get KitKat flavor in Q1 2014

lg-g2-6

We know that Edgar absolutely fell in love with the LG G2, and it offers a lot more than its little sibling, the Nexus 5. The important question, however, on most potential customers minds is when does the device get an Android 4.4 update? According to Court Elliot, a representative of the company who spoke with Mobile Syrup, the G2 should have the latest version of our favorite operating system by the end of Q1 2014, skipping Android 4.3 completely.

Count me a bit disappointed. With all carrier variants of the Moto X and the unlocked and developer editions of the HTC One already seeing an update, while the Galaxy S4 and the Note 3 having a target of January 2014, LG saying they potentially need four months more feels… slow. If it’s because of their horrendous skin, that only makes it worse for owners of the device.

Amazon’s apps and games deals for Black Friday to Cyber Monday are worth checking out

Posted: 01 Dec 2013 11:32 AM PST

This image has no alt text

I’m not personally a big fan of the Amazon App Store, probably because outside of their own devices, the process never felt very user friendly. However, every now and then, they do come out with some very interesting deals as part of their “App of the Day”. And they’ve topped that with a healthy margin with their latest offerings for the Black Friday to Cyber Monday period.

office suite pro1. OfficeSuite Pro ($0.99 instead of $14.99)

While OfficeSuite’s biggest competitors, Quickoffice, has been made free following Google’s acquisition of the company, OfficeSuite for just a dollar is still a steal. They’ve put the app on sale on Google Play, too, but it still costs $5.

Unfortunately, I don’t use either OfficeSuite or Quickoffice that much to point out which is better. The people, however, have voted in favour of OfficeSuite on Google Play, giving it 4.3 stars rating compared a 4 Quickoffice.

wheel of fortune2. Wheel of Fortune ($0.99 instead of $2.99)

Are you a fan of the classic game show? Or are you quite simply looking to while away some time? Then Wheel of Fortune might be a purchase worth considering now that it’s down to just a dollar.

tablet talk3. Tablet Talk ($0.99 instead of $2.99)

Tablet user, or going to become one after the $189 eBay deal I told you about yesterday? Then you should certainly consider the benefits Tablet Talk brings to you: you can get your SMS notifications (nice, rich, expandable ones as well as quick reply options) on your tablet, as well as read all of them or reply to them. The connection is over either Bluetooth or WiFi, so you are not restricted by the lack of internet access at any point. The app also has a Dashclock extension, allows you to theme it, and there is MMS and group MMS support. The app has a very healthy 4.4 rating on Google Play, so I would say this is a definite yes.

There are also a multitude of “Free Apps of the Day” offerings that I suggest keeping an eye out for, primarily consisting of several games, such as Sonic The Hedgehog, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rooftop Run, and Fruit Ninja, all of which won’t cost you a cent. Hurry up though, the deal on these games expires today.
