Posted: 06 Jan 2014 05:14 PM PST

you on 3g 4g

A couple of America’s biggest GSM carriers have announced some new 4G LTE launches today. I’m talking about T-Mobile and AT&T, the two parties who have been at war with each other ever since their failed attempt at merging. For the former — magenta — we’re 14 new launches around the country, while Ma Bell’s 26 rounds out their CES launch parade. Be sure to read ahead for the full list of cities for both:

T-Mobile

  • Ocala, FL
  • Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville, FL
  • Punta Gorda, FL
  • The Villages, FL
  • Valdosta, GA
  • Coeur d'Alene, ID
  • Bay City, MI
  • Holland, MI
  • Saginaw, MI
  • Gulfport-Biloxi, MS
  • Las Cruces, NM
  • Thomasville-Lexington, NC

AT&T

  • Hope, AR
  • Greeley, CO
  • Okeechobee, FL
  • Lewiston, ID
  • Crawfordsville, IN

Whew, those are some long lists. AT&T recently surpassed a sizable list of 500 markets covered in 4G LTE, while T-Mobile is making good time on catching up to the big boys. T-Mobile shouldn’t have many problems, though, with the carrier boasting that 2014 will be one to behold for those who enjoy seeing a network grow and grow and grow. Let us know if your city finally made the cut for either of these carriers.

Michael Bay bombs, awkwardly storms off stage at Samsung CES Press Event [VIDEO]

Posted: 06 Jan 2014 03:28 PM PST

Michael Bay might be a living Hollywood legend, but clearly he’s more comfortable being behind the camera instead of it. At Samsung’s CES Press Event, where they announced the Samsung Galaxy NotePro and Samsung Galaxy TabPro among other products, Bay was invited to comment on the company’s innovative new curved TV display.

And then this happened (if you don’t like train wrecks or fails…  don’t watch):

Initially I felt a bit bad for the guy and practically blushed of embarrassment just watching it happen. I can’t help but wonder what was going on in his head. Was he public speaking freeze shamed into exile? Does he just not give a blippety blip and decide to cut his losses short?

I’m sure you’ll have sarcastic responses in the comments that accurately identify the scenario. Personally, I think he was on the brink of a Christian Bale-like meltdown on whoever messed up his teleprompter, deciding it better to walk off and count to 10 billion. Regardless, Samsung did a great job rebounding and turning an otherwise awkward experience into a successful CES show.

Samsung announces Galaxy TabPRO tablets!

Samsung has kicked off the CES madness with four tablets that will accommodate to all users. These come in a variety of sizes and types, but in this post we will talk about the Galaxy TabPROs.

These come in 3 different sizes: 12.2 inches, 10.1 inches and 8.4 inches. It is not often that we see a 12.2-inch device, making this a rather interesting device. Are these worth your time and hard-earned money, though? Let’s look at what Samsung is offering.

TabPRO 12.2

  • 8.4-inch WQXGA (1600×2560) Super clear LCD
  • Android 4.4 (KitKat)
  • 8 Megapixel Auto Focus Camera with LED Flash
  • 2 Megapixel front-facing
  • 2GB RAM, 16/32 GB Internal Memory, microSD (Up to 64GB)
  • microSD (Up to 64GB)

Thee are some powerful tablets with amazing screen resolutions. As we can see, they are mostly the same except for size and form-factor. One small (but important) difference is that the TabPRO 12.2 does have one more GB of RAM. With 3 GB of RAM, the TabPRO 12.2 should be the best option for those who appreciate good multi-tasking power and large displays.

I am more of an 8-inch screen kind of guy, so if I were to choose between one of these I would go for the 8.4-inch version. There is nothing like the portability of a 7-8 inch tablet. What would you buy?

We are not sure what the price on these bad boys will be just yet, but be sure we will try to get all the details while we are at CES! If you are interested, though, we do know these will be available globally starting Q1, 2014.

Stay tuned for more details! We have hands-on videos coming.

Samsung officially announces Galaxy NotePro 12.2-inch Android tablet

Posted: 06 Jan 2014 02:11 PM PST

NotePRO_1

The folks at Samsung have officially announced the 12.2-inch Samsung Galaxy NotePro at CES 2014. Samsung says its goal was to kick the year off by flexing their muscles in the tablet space. You’re probably curious about those specs right away, aren’t ya? Have no fear — we’re not going to delay the goodness any longer.

Samsung Galaxy NotePro Specs

Samsung really went all out with this thing. If a gigantic display wasn’t enough, perhaps the entirety of this package will do the trick in getting your excitement levels up:

  • 12.2-inch WXQGA (2560 x 1600) display
  • Samsung Octa-Core Exynos processor (WiFi/WiFi + 3G) and Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (LTE)
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 8 megapixel rear camera, 2 megapixel front camera
  • 32GB / 64GB of internal storage, with microSD expansion up to 64GB
  • WiFi ac MIMO, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS
  • 9,500mAh battery
  • Android 4.4 KitKat

And there you have it. It’s certainly ready to kick some butt and take some names with that collection of silicon, and we aren’t surprised that it’s yet another entry in Samsung’s Note series that’s taking things to the next level.

Samsung Galaxy NotePro Features

Specs are only half the battle, of course. The NotePro will come equipped with Samsung’s standard TouchWiz-enabled user experience, with a couple of updated elements from the last time we’ve seen one of their Android tablets launch.

One of those elements include a bigger emphasis on the Magazine UX, giving you a look at all the content and info important to you in a clean, easy-to-view way. It also includes standard S Pen features, multi-window productivity, and more. It’s also good for business, apparently, with Cisco WebEx meetings built-in, and Samsung e-Meeting collaboration tools.

Samsung Galaxy NotePro Pricing and Availability

The Samsung Galaxy NotePro is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2014, but no specific dates, regions, or even a price point has been communicated just yet. We’ll certainly be on the lookout for what should be one of the most sought after tablets on the market whenever it launches. Stay tuned for our hands-on look from CES 2014!

ASUS adds three new affordable Zenfones, and the Padfone Mini

Posted: 06 Jan 2014 01:58 PM PST

ASUS has announced a bevy of new smartphones at their CES press event today. The main focus was the affordable Zenfone lineup, which consists of the ASUS Zenfone 4, Zenfone 5, and Zenfone 6.

asus zenfone series

All of these devices utilize Intel’s dual-core Atom chipsets, which means they’re meant to be a rather affordable bunch. Here’s a quick look at each:

ASUS Zenfone 4

  • 4-inch 800 x 480 display
  • 1.2GHz dual-core Intel Atom
  • 5 megapixel camera, VGA front camera
  • $99

ASUS Zenfone 5

  • 5-inch 720p display
  • 2GHz dual-core Intel Atom
  • PenTouch and Glove support
  • 8 megapixel camera, 2 megapixel front camera
  • $149

ASUS Zenfone 6

  • 6-inch 720p display
  • 2GHz dual-core Intel Atom
  • 13 megapixel camera, 2 megapixel front camera
  • $200

All of these smartphones will be running the new ZenUI ASUS has crafted, a simplistic UI on top of Android 4.3 which features the ability to change themes, get a daily agenda showing you everything you need to do and remember, a call back reminder feature, and more.

ASUS also came to town with the Padfone Mini, a 4-inch smartphone that can be paired with a 7-inch tablet dock for those times where you need something a tad bigger. Coming in at just $249, this thing has a 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Atom chipset, 8GB of internal storage and 800 x 480 resolution.

asus zenfone series

We won’t be rolling out the red carpet for this thing, though you can’t really ask for much more out of this combo for just under $250. ASUS hasn’t come out with any availability details for any of these devices, but it’s safe to say that we’ll be seeing them in various markets (likely not the United States, though) later this year. Stay tuned as we look to get some personal time with these little ones at CES 2014.

ASUS Transformer Book Duet TD300 announced as first Windows/Android dualboot tablet/notebook

Posted: 06 Jan 2014 01:03 PM PST

ASUS just wrapped up their CES 2014 press event where they announced a ton of great new products. One of those products was the ASUS Transformer Book Duet TD300, which they’re calling the world’s first 4-in-1 laptop / tablet combo running both Android and Windows on one chipset. It’s the first device to use Intel to run both Android and Windows on the same chip, meaning there’s little overhead and resources being used for emulating one or the other.

asus transformer book duet td300 photo op

This sort of combo has been done before, but devices typically need separate SoCs for each respective platform. Said SoCs might only be activated in certain states (for example, Windows would only be accessible while docked inside of a tablet dock). It certainly is an exciting achievement for ASUS and Intel, and it should prove to be the breakthrough needed to help increase the popularity of this useful form factor.

Even more exciting is its price tag: just $599 to walk away with one, apparently. We should note that is only the device’s starting price tag, though, which will come with a Core i3 processor and a 13.3-inch 1,366 x 768 display. That same configuration can be had in 1080p flavoring for just $100.

Models in the range go all the way up to a 1080p HD display with Intel’s Core i7 fourth generation processor. We’re not quite sure how much that will cost just yet, but judging by ASUS’ desire to keep costs down on other products in their lineup, we can’t imagine it’ll be a huge difference.

transfomrer book duet td300 2 transformer book duet td300 1 transformer book duet td300 3 transformer book duet td300 4 transformer book duet td300 5

We’re a bit saddened that this thing will only be running Android 4.1 at launch, but at least the Windows installation is the latest version available. We’ll be crossing our fingers that ASUS brings us up to at least Android 4.3, though we’d give them extra cool points if they can find a way to squeeze a KitKat bar in there somewhere. It should be launching in Europe and Asia in Q1 2014, and will be making its way stateside in Q2

Could NVIDIA Automotive help Android shake up an entire industry?

Posted: 06 Jan 2014 11:56 AM PST

Imagine your car dashboard.

NVDIA Car Dash

Now imagine using your computer or smartphone to customize everything about it.

NVIDIA Car Dash Edit

This is just the tip of the iceberg – more below – but listen to NVIDIA’s CEO discuss changes coming to a car driven by you in the near future:

That’s just the surface of NVIDIA’s innovation plans for the automotive industry. The above is called “Project Mercury” and allows automotive manufacturers to adjust, iterate, and offer live views of their cars incorporating an infinite number of colors, textures, and designs. Soon, NVIDIA hopes, your dashboard will be a lively canvas that looks and function more like your smartphone home screen: completely customizable.

The start of a new Automotive Era?

For years I’ve been trumpeting Android’s movement and eventual ubiquity in industries beyond mobile, but similar to mobile. Industries that had iterative advancements but whose oligopoly prevented dramatic improvements across the board. The two industries with the most potential: television and automotive.

Television’s technological renaissance may be a couple years away with so many licensing issues and vested interests creating an environment toxic to collaboration. Say what you want, but there isn’t a Steve Jobs around to pull off the impossible music-to-iTunes counterpart for the television industry. The auto industry, on the other hand, is chomping at the bit for more bytes.

NVIDIA Automotive Overview

Just as Google announced the Open Handset Alliance en route to revolutionizing the mobile industry, they’ve just announced the Open Automotive Alliance which could likely be the catalyst for a similar revolution seen in vehicles around the world. The founding members of that alliance are Audi, GM, Honda, Hyundai, and NVIDIA.

You might not know it but NVIDIA has been a player in the automotive industry for years and not just because they seem to lug bad ass sports cars to almost every major technology show on the planet (CES, MWC, etc… ). This year, though, NVIDIA is making some pivotal adjustments and announcements to make their presence in the Open Automotive Alliance well known.

The Real Smart Car: Advanced Driver Assistance

We’ve known for years now that Google is working on self driving cars; they’ve even been spotted in the wild. How in the heck does this technology actually work? You can guarantee that there is a whole lot going on in the background, and my guess – almost anonymously confirmed with announcement of the OAA launch partners – is that NVIDIA technology has a hand in it.

You know how your smartphone and camera offer live face recognition while recording video, following your subject around like white on rice? NVIDIA’s Advanced Driver Assistance technology does exactly that but instead of following faces, follows vehicles, obstacles, road signs, and more. Take a glimpse of it in action.

Don’t worry: this isn’t video you would be following live on your car dashboard. This is a reference design allowing automotive partners to track the various algorithms and see them in action. They use this to build the systems that eventually become Advanced Driver Assistance services, for example automatically initiating the brakes when a vehicle in front of you slams on theirs. Or perhaps noting the speed limit on a road sign has changed and automatically adjusting your cruise control to compensate.

Where is Automotive Tech headed?

We aren’t exactly flying around in Deloreans, or even getting driven around with google robot butlers (robutlers? anyone?), but automotive tech is poised to see strong leaps and growth in the coming 3 years. Much of that will be based on the announcements and changes happening this year. Watch the NVIDIA CEO discuss his company’s position on those changes and stay tuned to Phandroid for much in Android automotive from CES 2014.

How would you feel about having Android prevalent in your next vehicle?

Huawei announces Ascend Mate 2 4G, we go hands-on [CES 2014]

Posted: 06 Jan 2014 11:54 AM PST

hauwei-ascend-mate-2-1

Last year, Huawei announced the Ascend Mate, a plus-sized phablet that was one of the pleasant surprises of CES 2013. This year, Huawei has naturally advanced the model to the next generation, introducing the Ascend Mate 2 4G.

The Ascend Mate 2 4G features quad-core processing, 4G LTE support for nearly every wireless standard (it won’t officially launch in the US, but will be compatible with all carriers), and, of course, a 6.1-inch display. A 5MP front-facing camera and 13MP rear camera (itself a Sony BSI sensor) provide plenty of possibilities when it comes to capturing photos. Adding to this are an array of software-based enhancements introducing panoramic selfies, a beauty enhancement slider, and a special preview window. Other aspects of this skinned version of Android have been modified as well, utilizing the large screen area for easier multitasking, one-handed use, and more.

But what everyone will be talking about is the phone’s 4050mAh battery, a true gargantuan of power. The phone is claimed to last two full days on a single charge. With heavy use, the battery is still said to clock over a full day and then some. All this in a form factor that manages to not feel all that large (considering its display size).

huawei-ascend-mate-2-2

The Ascend Mate 2 comes as a worthy successor to the original, a phone that while it did not make a trip to the US saw modest success in countries around the globe. Huawei’s big push this year is to raise brand awareness. In an effort to focus on other regions, that means a forfeiture of US territory, but if they continue to churn out quality mobile devices it won’t be long before they return to the US.

Corning introduces new Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass to help keep your smartphone sterile

Posted: 06 Jan 2014 11:49 AM PST

gorilla-glass

OCD sufferers rejoice! Corning — makers of the tougher-than-nails Gorilla Glass — have announced their newest creation: Corning Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass. The EPA-registered antimicrobial glass is infused with ionic silver to “inhibit the growth” of algae, mold, mildew, fungi and of course, bacteria — keeping you safe as you pass about your tablets, smartphones, and the like.

Corning says this new type of Gorilla Glass was made to help address the public’s growing concern with harmful bacteria, and its antimicrobial properties are promised for the life of the device. Some of you might remember a study from not too long ago that showed 1 in 6 smartphones had high traces of fecal matter, so maybe this new Gorilla Glass isn’t such a bad idea after all.

Corning will be showing off the Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass at their booth during CES. We’re not sure exactly how they’ll “demo” it (our imaginations are already running wild), but stayed tuned for our coverage later in the week as we follow up.

Pebble announces luxurious new Steel watch, upcoming app store and new partners

Posted: 06 Jan 2014 11:46 AM PST

Nothing like the biggest tech event of the year to announce an awesome new product. Pebble has what you need if you have been looking for a smartwatch that doesn’t look like an adult toy. Need a watch that will give you some style? The Pebble Steel is here!

pebble-steel

The new watch comes in 3 options: black steel, silver steel and leather strap. All three look great and come with the same features as the regular Pebble, which also just got better! You get the ePaper display, water proof support, Gorilla Glass and more. Oh, but there is more from Pebble!

App store launching this month

pebble-appstore

Pebble also announced its new app store, which will be available directly from the Pebble app. You will be able to download all your apps and watch faces straight from your device and transfer them to your watch… all on-the-go.

The app store will be available to Pebble users later in January.

New partners

If you are not seriously considering getting a Pebble yet, you might get more excited with the new partnerships Pebble announced. Once the app store launches, users will have access to the Pandora, ESPN and Mercedes-Benz apps. Other apps include Yelp, Foursquare, GoPro and iControl.

Price and availability: is the Pebble Steel worth it?

The Pebble Steel will cost you an extra $100! This means it will cost $249, and it will begin shipping on January 28.

I happen to love the new design and it seems like the display is even bigger. The original Pebble does look a bit “toyish” to me (just like all other smartwatches). It’s nice to see Pebble bringing more mature-looking options to the market.

Is the Pebble Steel worth the extra $100, though? It depends on your taste. As for me, I am kinda liking the one with the leather strap.

Human faces generated by Tegra K1 powered tablets will blow you away

Posted: 06 Jan 2014 11:20 AM PST

The power of mobile processors has grown considerably in the past few years, but last night, NVIDIA whipped out a Carl Lewis triple jump by announcing the 192-core Tegra K1 processor.

The press conference went on for a couple hours, discussing everything from the nitty gritty specs, to impact on the automotive industry, and even crop circles NVIDIA employees made as a low budget marketing idea. It was all good stuff, but I was sold on the Tegra K1 with one demo: human faces generated in real-time.

IMG_4994

That might be the most lifelike human faces I’ve ever seen generated by a computer. The picture simply doesn’t do justice. It was the realism in the facial expressions. The fluidity with which the brow furrowed and the lips puckered. Look at the small crescent of light peering through the thin cartilage of the ear. The quality of images generated with the Tegra K1 was nothing short of amazing. I was in awe.

We got a nice hands-on look at the face simulation in action:

If this type of realism could be brought to real environments in gameplay, we could be seeing game experiences that parallel Xbox One, PS4, and PC directly on our Android tablets. They took another step to showing us just that with a living room setting. It may seem crazy, but I fell in love with this couch.

IMG_4996

Moving around the room and directly up to the couch made the environment feel absolutely real, not computer generated. Take a look at this couch, the texture of the fabric, and the way it sits and folds on the back cushions.

IMG_4998

Reminds me a bit of the movie Inception where “the architect” perfectly re-imagines the real world in a dream world, with the subjects only being able to differentiate the difference by actually feeling the surface. This couch looks so real and so comfortable, I’m worried what Rick James would do to it or say about it.

It went much further than just the couch, obviously. It was the grain of the hardwood floor. The way the light reflected and refracted on different objects appropriately, from the dense soak of rubber to the shiny glaze of chrome trashcans. For the Tegra K1, it’s all about the details, especially the spot-on details you may overlook if you didn’t know any better.

The face and room simulations were nothing short of spectacular but toss in thousands of computer AI generated in-game activities and the story might be a little bit different. Enemies running here and there while reacting to your gameplay, different explosions going off in the foreground and background, all these simultaneous processor intensive activities distribute the processor’s attention across different tasks, making it more difficult to render these real life settings in realtime.

NVIDIA showed some in-game examples of the Tegra K1 at work, but to honest, they didn’t shine like the face simulation and the room simulation above. I’m not surprised, nor worried. The K1 is fresh off the assembly line and clearly has “alpha” stamped on its forehead. They’ve got improvements to make, but if NVIDIA can make gameplay look, feel, and perform like some of these demos… we’re all in for a big treat when “next gen” gaming (and automative) firmly plant their feet.

AT&T to be the exclusive US carrier of the ASUS Padfone X

Posted: 06 Jan 2014 10:58 AM PST

asus-padfone-x-att

AT&T has just announced that they will have exclusive rights in the United States to carry the ASUS Padfone X. This phone/tablet combo is quite unique. The phone itself is a 5-inch device, and it can be docked into the back of a 9-inch tablet dock that has its own display and battery. It’ll feature Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box and support for LTE-Advanced, though there weren’t many other specs revealed at this point.

"We are committed to delivering our customers the most innovative and compelling device portfolio," said Jeff Bradley, senior vice president of devices at AT&T. "The PadFone X is first of its kind in the U.S. It combines leading technology, a beautiful design and a remarkably seamless application experience – all on the nation's fastest and most reliable 4G LTE network.”

The original Padfone created a lot of noise, but its limited global availability made it an afterthought for most people. It should be a very interesting device among a group of heavy hitters on AT&T’s store shelves, though, so we’re interested in seeing how it’ll do here in the United States. ASUS still has a press conference coming up later today, so stay tuned as we look to get more info about the Padfone X in the moments to come.

Hands-on: Lenovo ThinkVision 28 4K Smart Display [VIDEO]

Lenovo-ThinkVision-28-4K-Smart-Display-2

Android devices come and go, especially the All-in-One Android computers. A mobile OS on a large, non-portable screen is simply not that practical, but Lenovo may have something very interesting up its sleeve with the Lenovo ThinkVision 28 4K Smart Display.

Lenovo ThinkVision 28 4K Smart Display specs

  • Android 4.4 KitKat
  • 28-inch 3840×2160p 4K display
  • NVIDIA Tegra processor
  • 2.1 MP camera
  • WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC
  • DisplayPort, HDMI, USB 3.0, MicroSD

This machine is a 28-inch computer with a stunning 4K display! And believe me guys… it really is stunning. The colors and definitions are sharp, colorful and clear. Android is not the main feature here, though, which is what makes this device special.

They are focusing on selling a convenient 4K display. As the Lenovo representative told us, Android is just there so you can display content to your screen.

Price & availability

The device is a little pricy at $1,199, but having a 28-inch 4K display coupled with Android could make it enticing to some. It is coming to the USA in July 2014! Would you buy it?

Eyes-on: Parrot Jumping Sumo [VIDEO]

Posted: 06 Jan 2014 10:53 AM PST

Parrot-Jumping-Sumo-copy

During last night’s CES Unveiled, Parrot’s unveiled their upcoming connected toy line but the high-flying MiniDrone was only one-half of the equation. Where the MiniDrone dominates the sky, Parrot’s Jumping Sumo takes to the ground, featuring a more rugged design that is able to take a beating and keep on ticking… or flipping, rather.

The Jumping Sumo has a single extendable arm that has enough power to launch the Sumo high into the air, clearing stairs or any other obstacles standing in its way. The arm can also grab items, carrying the precious cargo back to the user.

During the demo, we watch as the Sumo flipped, fell, and took a tumble, all while being controlled by the companion mobile app. The app also shows a live feed for a handy first-person view of the action. Again, no word on exact availability of the Jumping Sumo or its MiniDrone sibling, but expect to have both of them in time for the 2014 holiday season.

Polaroid’s Socialmatic 14 megapixel Android camera looks like a big Instagram icon

Polaroid socialmatic camera

Polaroid has announced a new Android camera with a very interesting and unique form factor. They’re calling it the Polaroid Socialmatic, which houses a 14 megapixel zoom sensor alongside a 2 megapixel front-cam for selfies. This thing runs Android inside a decent-sized 4.5-inch display, and in case you haven’t already noticed, it looks like a gigantic Instagram icon.

The Polaroid Socialmatic was named after its ability to edit and share shots instantly to all your favorite social apps, though there’s more to this thing than Android. It also includes the ability to print small photos on-board, with Polaroid’s Zero Ink (or ZINK) 2 x 3″ printing paper being compatible with the thing. It seems like a cool way to quickly capture and share memories with your friends and family on the go.

We don’t know many of the other specs powering this thing, though we imagine it’s not something that has to be super powerful for the task of snapping and editing photos. The camera is set to come out later this Fall, so no pricing or exact availability information is available to us just yet.

How to Extract Files from Almost Any Kind of Archive

Posted: 06 Jan 2014 02:28 AM PST

Ever come across an unusual Windows file archive format that your favorite archiving utility couldn't unpack? Most of the time one of the well-known programs like 7-Zip will do the job but there are a large number of different archive formats and sometimes you may encounter one of the rarer ones. In that case, you will probably be successful if you try the little free utility called "Universal Extractor". Hey it even extracts the files from a Windows .msi file.

Posted: 05 Jan 2014 06:14 PM PST

parrot-minidrone

If there is a company we are sure we will see at every single event, it has to be Parrot. These guys bring their quadcopters to every corner of the world, but today they have something a little special for us – the Parrot Mini Drone.

Form factor and features

This little guy is not like the awesome Parrot Drone 2.0, but it will be easier to take around. The whole quadcopter fits in the palm of your hand, making it a fun and simple toy for the kids (and adults).

To protect the device, Parrot has included 2 protective wheels. These can be removed for more fun, but be sure to have a good handle on it before you do that. Parrot does say they will be “affordable”, but they can’t be super cheap either.

One awesome feature is that the MiniDrone does not work only on WiFi. The user can opt for both Bluetooth and WiFi in order to control the flying copter.

Price and availability

Price and availability are still vague. All we know is that they will be “affordable” and will be released “this year”. I have to say, guys – I kinda want one!

If you're partial to shooting things within the confines of your PC, but you don't like the blood and violence of modern games, take a look at Digital Paintball 2. It's an online paintball game where your only mission is to splat someone with a paint pellet. No one dies, and the scariest thing is the occasional blast of red paint.

What is the “LG G Bot” and several other new trademarks LG filed for recently?

Posted: 04 Jan 2014 03:22 PM PST

lg-logo

CES wouldn’t be CES without some last minute trademark filings, would it? LG is our benefactor in today’s episode, with the South Korean company giving us a gargantuan list of new trademark filings ahead of the big annual show. There’s a lot to see here, so let’s just hop right into it:

  • LG G Bot: the “G” in this bot’s name has us thinking this could be some sort of Android device, but it could be anything… like a competitor for The iRobot smart vacuum.
  • Meta Drive: a new cloud storage service? It’s all the rage these days.
  • Fireweb: could be an Opera Turbo-esque feature for the stock browser where pages are compressed for harsh data connections. Or perhaps a new browser altogether.
  • Air Gap and Zero Gap: new names for a zero gap chassis construction? This is anyone’s guess.

There were a great deal more, such as Exalt, Reflex, Elite, and Motion, but a great deal of these were old trademarks being renewed by LG for current or possible future use. Trademark filings don’t often reveal much about the products they’re supposed to represent, but it’s always fun to play the guessing and dreaming game.

We expect LG to make a bit of noise at CES next week, and whatever they don’t show in Vegas we’re definitely expecting them to bring to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month. These trademarks could end up being something completely different than what we’ve predicted here, but that’s the nature of filings that leave you with just an inkling of information and a ton of time to let your imagination run wild. Let us know what you think these might be in the comments section below.

Panono hits Indiegogo goal – let’s you create Google Street View-like 108MP spherical panoramic images

Posted: 03 Jan 2014 05:05 PM PST

Panono panoramic ball

Okay, so creating 360-degree “spherical” panoramic images isn’t the most original idea on the planet. Even though we’ve seen an attempt with Android’s Photo Sphere, it’s something that’s nearly impossible to pull off flawlessly.

Guess that’s why Panono — an Indiegogo project that kicked off back in October — was successfully able to hit their funding goal and then some. Simply put, Panono is a plastic ball with a 36 tiny cameras housed inside. When tossed in the air, Panono will fire off all its cameras simultaneously, for near-flawless 360-degree x 360-degree panoramic stills — the likes you’re only used to seeing on Google Street View.

The resulting images are a whopping 108MP when stitched together, a process that’s done in the cloud after Panono uploads the images through your smartphone via the Android/iOS app. Panono can actually be used in a few ways — by either chucking it in the air, mounting it on a pole/monopod, or by simply holding it with your hand.

PANONO_app_cloud

Inside, there’s onboard memory capable of holding 400 108MP shots, and an accelerometer for figuring out the optimal time to take a shot when tossed (at the ball’s apex). The ball only weighs about 300g, and charges via USB. The Panono app is already available on Google Play if you’d simply like to view the quality of Panono’s stitched images. We’ll even embed one of our favorites below.

Before you rush off to the Indiegogo page to buy your own, keep in mind tech like this doesn’t come cheap. Even at the early backer pricing, which gets you $100-off, Panono will still run you around $500. Not exactly pocket change.

If that hasn’t scared you away yet, you still have 32 hours left to snag a Panono for yourself, with shipping beginning in September. Me? Well, I suppose I’ll continue using Photo Sphere like an animal.

Heads up: Your Vine feed and profiles are now available on the web, reserve your custom URL before it’s too late

Vine profiles web

Vine has been struggling to keep up with the Instagrams and Snapchats of the world. It’s not too often we get big usability updates from Vine, but today the Vine team announced the release of all new user profiles and web accessibility for their users.

This means if you have a Vine account, your feed is now available from any web browser, in addition to your own personal profile page, complete with ever video you’ve uploaded or “reVined”. While not directly Android related, this is still a big deal for a service that once only lived inside their mobile app.

If you hurry over, you can snag your own custom vanity URL by visiting vine.co/profiles.

New HTC M8 details: HTC One+ name, Snapdragon 805, 2,900mAh battery, and software keys [RUMOR]

Posted: 03 Jan 2014 02:09 PM PST

HTC One

Yesterday, @evleaks was able to provide us with a short list of preliminary specs for the upcoming HTC One sequel — the HTC M8. Now, according to Mike1986 (a popular ROM developer on XDA who regularly obtains leaked HTC software builds) we now have some additional info on what we can expect from the HTC One followup, including its possible release name.

Going by HTC One+, this could be a clue that this device might be more of an incremental update from the already stellar HTC One, as opposed to a fully redesigned, spec’d out 2K monster. That’s not to say the specs haven’t gotten a nice a bump. The One+ is said to feature the obligatory improved processor, coming equipped with a Snapdragon 805 working alongside speedier DDR3 RAM.

Display size has been increased to 5-inches (hopefully by shrinking the One’s bezels) but in a strange twist, it seems HTC could be doing away with capacitive keys in favor of on-screen software keys. It’s not a “feature” everyone will be too happy about (myself included), but I’m sure we’ll learn to cope.

Addressing criticisms with the original HTC One, the HTC One+ could be this year’s “people’s smartphone”. Not only has HTC increased the battery size to 2,900mAh for added screen-on time, but they may have also equipped the One+ with the oft requested micro SD card slot. We know, that’s kind of a big deal for some of you out there.

Still up in the air is whether or not the HTC One+ will feature the recently rumored dual-lens UltraPixel camera (not for 3D video, thank goodness) for increased dynamic range and improved picture quality. Here’s all the “leaked” specs at a glance:

HTC One+ (HTC M8)

  • 5-inch full HD 1080p display with Gorilla Glass 3
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 805
  • 2GB LPDDR3
  • 6MP or 8MP “UltraPixel” camera with possible dual-lens
  • 2.1MP front facing camera
  • 2,900mAh battery
  • No capacitive buttons (software)
  • Android KitKat with HTC Sense 6.0
  • Micro-SIM
  • NFC
  • SD card slot

The HTC One+ could be shaping up to be one helluva smartphone for 2014. Given the “+” in the name and not a new number, we’re wondering if the new design wont mirror closely that of the current HTC One (gapless construction, aluminum body, etc.). Don’t forget if HTC once again goes the Google Play edition route, we might have one heck of a Nexus killer on our hands.

Samsung Galaxy NX Mini trademark filing appears at USPTO

Posted: 03 Jan 2014 12:16 PM PST

Samsung GALAXY NX

Samsung sure does love their Android-based cameras. The Korean mobile giant recently unveiled the new Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 after debuting their first mirrorless camera, the Galaxy NX, over the summer. Now it appears another entry in the Galaxy NX series is the way, as revealed by way of a trademark filing with the USPTO.

The filing is for the trademark Samsung Galaxy NX Mini. All logic points to this being a smaller version of the camera that went on sale in November. It is likely to be cheaper, as well. The original Galaxy NX retails for $1,600, while the smaller, Android-less Samsung NX300 goes for $500.

The Galaxy NX in its current form carries a 20.3MP APS-C sensor along with a 1.6GHz quad-core CPU and 4.8-inch HD display. The NX features Android 4.2.2. We can expect Samsung to retain similar specs for the Galaxy NX Mini, though it would not be surprising to see the hardware trimmed to a certain extent.

The filing pops up just before CES, which leads to speculation that the Galaxy NC Mini could make an appearance at the annual trade show. It could, however, merely be a coincidence.

ZTE announces Grand S II, Nubia 5S, and even a mini projector/wireless hotspot for CES 2014

Posted: 03 Jan 2014 11:02 AM PST

zte-grand-memo-girls-1

Not to be outdone by Lenovo — who, yesterday, we told you was bringing 4 new Android devices to this year’s CES — ZTE is coming in hot with a handful of devices of their own. More a “portfolio” of new products, ZTE will introduce new smartphones and even wearables at this year’s show, including a partnership with AT&T for smartphones and a wireless home phone. Here’s what ZTE has lined up for the event.

ZTE Grand S II

A follow up to last year’s gorgeous ZTE Grand S, the Grand S II is being called a “high-precision voice phone”. What does that mean? Well, in Moto X like fashion, the Grand S II will use voice recognition technology even while it’s sleeping. Voice commands will also play a role in the camera app where the device’s onboard triple-mic noise reduction should help at drowning out background noise. The press release didn’t include photos or other specs, so we’ll have to find out more when CES officially kicks off next week.

ZTE is also bringing a new device to US shores by way of the ZTE Sonata 4G for AT&T’s prepaid Aio Wireless. Light on specs — which also means light on the wallet — the device will feature a 4-inch display, dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor,  1GB RAM, and 5MP camera. Where most ZTE devices that come to the states find the manufacturer’s name stripped from their title, we found it interesting the ZTE’s name remained intact.

Nubia 5S and 5S Mini

ZTE is further expanding their Nubia line of Android handsets with the Nubia 5S and Nubia 5S Mini. The larger 5S will feature a 1080p display, 13MP camera with Sony RS sensor and large f/2.0 aperture, 4K video capture. No word on other specs, although ZTE did mention both devices will feature a “screaming-fast” Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processors, for what it’s worth.

ZTE Iconic Phablet

ZTE also announced a new phablet they’ll be showing off, appropriately named the ZTE Iconic Phablet. This large-screened device will feature a 5.7-inch display, dual-core processor, and wireless charging. No word on other hardware specs, but we expect this to fit in with their other affordable line of devices.

ZTE BlueWatch

Making the move into wearables, ZTE will debut their first smartwatch dubbed the ZTE BlueWatch. The smartwatch features a built-in pedometer for tracking body fat, calories burned, and the like. Using a Bluetooth connection, the BlueWatch can pair up with your smartphone and be used as a remote for the camera, phone calls, or other media, as well as display notifications from Twitter and Facebook.

Others

But it isn’t all about smartphones and wearables for ZTE. The manufacturer will be showing off a new wireless hotspot that features a built-in projector (we hope it has a big battery), and the AT&T Wireless Home Base. Another partnership with AT&T, the Home Base allows users to connect their standard home phone into the base and connect to AT&T’s wireless network for unlimited local and long distance calling at $20 a month.

Looks like ZTE is slowly but surely making a bigger push into the US market, and we’re sure this is only a taste of things to come. We’ll be giving you guys a hands-on with all these devices and more during our CES 2014 coverage next week. Should be fun!

Intel to bring dual-boot Android/Windows devices to CES?

Posted: 03 Jan 2014 10:47 AM PST

android-supports-intel-atom-hardware-0

A tablet or netbook with the ability to dual-boot between various versions of Windows and Android is not an entirely new concept, but it is one that has not become exceptionally mainstream. According to a number of sources, Intel might be looking to change that perception at this year's CES with the announcement of several devices with such capabilities. The only problem? Neither Google nor Microsoft seem all the keen on the idea.

With Windows PC sales already on the decline, Intel sees the addition of Android as a way to raise consumer interest, though other manufacturers doing just that have seen mixed results in the past. Aside from being generally clunky devices, dual-boot systems typically settle for compromises in implementing both Windows and Android. The result is a device not especially tailored to either operating system. Intel could improve on this with their current breed of CPU and x86-optimized versions of Android, but it still might be a reach.

As for Google and Microsoft, reports are stating the the latter is actively attempting to convince partners to nix Android from the devices they plan to show at CES. Google could take an even more proactive approach refusing to certify such devices for use with Google Play and other services. \

As The Verge notes, the introduction of hybrid devices from Intel at CES is sure to generate headlines, and that might ultimately be the goal. The actual success of such a device, or it's ability to salvage a slumping PC market, could be fleeting if history is any indicator.

Acer announces refreshed Iconia tabs, Liquid Z5 smartphone for CES

Posted: 03 Jan 2014 10:04 AM PST

Acer-Liquid-Z5

Acer is giving us a preview of what they will have on hand at next week's gargantuan CES event, revealing updated tablets and a new smartphone all targeted as affordable devices for the masses. New devices include revised versions of the Acer Iconia A1 and B1 as well as the new Acer Liquid Z5.

All three devices are priced right around the $200 sweet spot that consumers love. The Liquid Z5 is the most expensive of the bunch, debuting at €169 in Europe. You get what you pay for at that price, though. Specs include a 5-inch display with sub-HD resolution (854×480), 1.3GHz dual-core CPU from MediaTek with 512MB of RAM, and 5MP camera. The phone will run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean when it launches later this month in European countries such as France, Germany, Spain, and the UK. No US release has been announced.

Acer-Iconia-A1-830-1

More intriguing are Acer's two low-priced tablet options. The Acer Iconia A1 update features a 7.9-inch display with 1024×768 resolution. The tablet is powered by an Intel Atom Z2560 chipset clocked at 1.6GHz. Of the three products, the A1 is the only one currently slated for a US release. It will launch sometime this quarter for $149. In the UK it will be joined by the Iconia B1. It's updated form carries a 7-inch display and 1.3GHz dual-core CPU for a price of €129 when it launches in the UK later this month.

Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 rumored to feature octa-core Exynos CPU, 2560×1600 display

Posted: 03 Jan 2014 08:19 AM PST

Galaxy_Tab_10_1_Wide-640x426

The AnTuTu benchmark site is giving a bit of a peak at the power housed within the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1. Benchmark results show a slate worthy of the "Pro" tag, revealing a 1.9GHz Exynos 5420 of the octa-core variety and 2560×1600 resolution display.

The resolution surpasses 2K HD but falls shy of the elusive 4K. Still, that's a whole lot of pixels crammed into a 10.1-inch display. Other specs revealed include 2GB of RAM and an 8MP rear camera. The model tested featured 32GB of storage, though the Tab Pro will likely come in at least two storage capacities. The slate was marked as running Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

There is a decent chance we see Samsung unveil their new line of Galaxy Tab products next week at CES, but for now that is mere speculation. Rumors point to the new Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 launching alongside several additional Pro and Lite models during the first half of the year.

Polaroid unveils Q series tablets ahead of CES, offer KitKat for as low as $129

Posted: 03 Jan 2014 07:41 AM PST

polaroid-q7

For the past several years Polaroid has made a few feeble attempts at jumping on the Android bandwagon. There were, of course, a couple flavors of Android-powere cameras. Then there were the tablets, of the kiddie and regular variety. None were particularly impressive, but Polaroid hopes to change that this year with the announcement of three new KitKat-powered slates as part of their new Q series.

That's right. At the very least, these three budget-oriented devices ship with Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box, which is more than a lot of devices can boast. Otherwise the spec list isn't all that notable. There is quad-core processing, though it likely won't blow away the benchmark tests, and HDMI video output as part of the package, but otherwise don't expect much from Polaroid's lineup of Q tablets.

polaroid-q8

Three models will be on display next week at CES, which seems to be their preferred location to unveil devices that will quickly be forgotten by tech fans and probably never noticed by the general public. The Q7 features a 7-inch display while the Q8 and Q10 feature 8-inch and 10.1-inch displays respectively. The real selling point on these guys, though, is the price. The Q7 will retail for $129 while the largest option isn't much more expensive at $179.

AT&T offering up to $450 to customers that switch from T-Mobile [UPDATE]

Posted: 03 Jan 2014 06:45 AM PST

dbpix-att-store-tmagArticle

Rumors abound T-Mobile's next phase of their Uncarrier program could involve buying customers out of their current contracts with competing carriers.  One of those competitors just beat them to the punch. AT&T is offering up to $450 in incentives to customers switching from T-Mobile in an effort to sway users away from a service provider that has been causing headaches for others in the same business.

AT&T is offering up to $250 (depending on condition) to folks who trade-in their current T-Mobile smartphone. The money is distributed in the form of a promotion card good toward AT&T products and services. Additionally, customers can earn a $200 credit by opting into an AT&T Next plan or buying a device at full price. Activating a currently owned device on AT&T's network qualifies a customer for the promotion as well (basically the credit applies to anything but a traditional subsidized service contract).

It's a brazen move by AT&T. T-Mobile has caused quite the shakeup in the wireless industry, introducing their JUMP program, redefining the payment and upgrade process for mobile devices along with lower service rates. Every major carrier has followed suit and offered similar buying options in the months since. AT&T has been a particular target, and it's suspected T-Mobile's next move — to be unveiled next week at CES — would target the carrier by offering to buy out the early termination fees of customers switching from one network to the other. Not wanting to again be caught playing catchup, AT&T has struck first. Good for them.

[Press Release]

UPDATE: T-Mobile’s CEO John Legere has issued a quick response via press release.

“This is a desperate move by AT&T on the heels of what must have been a terrible Q4 and holiday for them. I’m flattered that we have made them so uncomfortable! We used AT&T’s cash to build a far superior network and added Un-carrier moves to take tons of their customers – and now they want to bribe them back! Consumers won’t be fooled…nothing has changed; customers will still feel the same old pain that AT&T is famous for. Just wait until CES to hear what pain points we are eliminating next. The competition is going to be toast!”

Automatic Warning If You're About To Install Unwanted Software

Posted: 03 Jan 2014 12:26 AM PST

Welcome to 2014 and, if you celebrate such things, I hope you had a great Christmas. Here's to another year of great free software, which the tireless contributors to this web site continue to seek out on your behalf.

Of course, free software has to be financed somehow, and many authors now add additional routines to their installation system in order to persuade you to install extra software. For every browser toolbar you choose to install (or forget to untick the checkbox when you're offered the opportunity to decline), the freeware program's author gets a small kick-back.

Programs which "trick" you into installing additional software like this are a common cause of complaint among Gizmo's readers, which is why I was so pleased when regular contributor Panzer told me about Unchecky.

The program sits silently in the background on your PC, waiting until you install new software. At which point it springs into action to check that you're not inadvertently about to install an additional unwanted module. If it thinks that you are, it pops up a warning.
