Android head talks Project Svelte and how Android 4.4 KitKat is the leanest Android version yet

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 06:44 PM PST

Android 4.4 KitKat launcher

Back during Google IO 2012, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean was officially unveiled unto the world. Major firmware versions always bring their share of new features, it was a little something Google called Project Butter that got us the most excited. Addressing Android less than consistent frame rates, Project Butter looked to finally make the Android UI as silky and smooth as iOS butter.

As we approach Thanksgiving, it’s safe to say we all know firsthand how consuming excessive amounts of butter can put on the pounds. I guess something similar began to happen in Android. In an interview with ReadWrite, Android’s head of engineering, Dave Burke — the man behind Project Butter — talked about his latest contribution to Google’s mobile OS: Project Svelte.

Project Svelte had one goal, to slim down and optimize Android so that it could run on both high and low-end devices. This would help reduce OEM’s dependence on Gingerbread for their low-end hardware. Burke talks about the painful process his team endured after testing KitKat to run on modified Nexus 4 using only 512MB of RAM, dual-cores (instead of 4), lower CPU clocks speed, and at 960×540 resolution — a common configuration in low-end hardware. Burke didn’t just talk about it, he and his team lived it. These crippled Nexus 4s were the team’s primary devices.

Project Svelte

  • Reduce the footprint of the system.
  • Reduce the footprint (memory usage) of the apps that run on a Google Experience (Nexus) device.
  • Fix how apps react and crash during bad memory situations.
  • Provide better measurement and instrumentation of how apps are running in Android so developers can see how memory-conscious their apps are.

Using a new developer tool called ProcStats, Google was able to monitor the RAM usage of their apps, finding out which were behaving, and which were eating system resources for breakfast. In the end, Google was able to tweak their apps, decoupling many of them from the operating system altogether. It’s this trimming of the fat that makes Android 4.4 KitKat the leanest and meanest Android release yet.

In our experience running Android 4.4 KitKat on the Nexus 5, we mentioned in our review how much quicker Google’s device is over even the LG G2, the Nexus 5′s sister device powered by the same processor and packing the same amount of RAM. While optimistic, we’ll have to reserve final judgement until the first low-end KitKat devices begin to hit the market sometime next year.

Anyone out there running KitKat on older Nexus hardware? Have you experienced a noticeable improvement in speed?

Moto X with wood finish still on the way, will arrive in time for the holidays – but will you wait?

moto-x-hipster

There’s been a lot of guessing as to when we might expect the wood-backed Moto X’s to hit Motorola’s virtual store shelves. A premium option that will be available on Motomaker, the last we heard from it was earlier this month in a leak. No date mind you, just the 4 finishes — Teak, Ebony, Rosewood and Bamboo — listed on Motomaker as “coming soon.”

Today, Reuters’ Sinead Carew provided us with an update, going on the record as saying the wood finishes would, unfortunately, miss their target Thanksgiving release, but should still arrive in time for holiday shopping.

For some of you, you’ve been waiting to pull the trigger on a Moto X until these special wood-backings were available, and who could blame you. It’s a shame they weren’t made available shortly after the device’s release, but we imagine real wood is a little harder to come by these days.

NVIDIA teases SHIELD Black Friday bundle deal

NVIDIA SHIELD Black Friday deal

The holiday deals keep on coming. This time it’s NVIDIA stepping up to the plate, prepping the NVIDIA Shield Android handheld for an upcoming Black Friday deal to be revealed on Thanksgiving, at 9pm PT.

Details are scarce, pretty much all we know is that the deal include some kind of bundle, with Batman Arkham Origins making an appearance in the fine print. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for a deeply discounted NVIDIA SHIELD (we’ve been looking for a good excuse to pick one up), and will have our pocketbooks ready.

Stay tuned, folks…

Familiar “Ok Google” hotword arrives on desktop via official Chrome extension

Chrome Google Voice Search Hotword extension

The “Ok Google” hotword — the phrase spoken to perform a Google Voice Search — is slowly growing into a pop icon. We’ve watched as its evolved, making its first appearance in Google Glass (albeit under the slightly modified Ok Glass command), to today where it’s made its home on our Nexus 5 homescreens.

Today, “Ok Google” has finally landed on the desktop via Google’s all new extension for the Chrome web browser. Once installed on Chrome, the Google homepage will automatically begin listening for the familiar “Ok Google” command to perform hands-free voice searches. Pretty neat. Oh, and to avoid sucking battery life out of laptops, Google.com will stop listening for the hotword after 5 minutes of inactivity.

To show off Chrome’s all new feature, Google uploaded a new video onto YouTube for easy sharing with friends and family. Help spread the word, and try out the extension for yourself.

Sonic Dash comes rolling into the Google Play Store, takes in-app ads to another level

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 12:49 PM PST

Sonic Dash for Android

If you spent any length of time looking for games to download onto your Android device, you’d know the Google Play Store has no shortage of endless runners. Today, your favorite spikey-haired hedgehog is joining their ranks. Sonic Dash, is all new for Android and features the world famous blue protagonist, as he spins, jumps and, of course, dashes his way throughout linear levels in search of shiny gold coins.

Sonic Dash Android

An endless runner more akin to Subway Surfers, players assume the role as Sonic the Hedgehog, flicking either left or right to dodge obstacles, swiping up to jump over them, or down to spin attack. For a Sonic the Hedgehog game, we have to admit, it translates pretty darn well into an endless runner. Gameplay is challenging, obstacles and enemies are mixed, and it will take quick reflexes to clear areas and bank coins.

In-game currency

Because Sonic Dash is a freemium game we’re talking about here, the usual sets of in-game currency apply. You’ll accumulate gold coins the easiest, simply by playing a level and banking them at various checkpoints. These can be spent on simple power ups to advance further in a level, giving you bragging rights should you connect the game to your social networks. Harder to come by are the “Red Star Rings”, used for unlocking new characters, playing mini games, or gaining extra lives. It’s the typical freemium-fare, something we’ve grown accustomed to.

Sonic Dash purchases and currency

Ads

It’s Sonic Dash’s other business model that will, no doubt, be the make-or-break for most. Intrusive popup video ads greet you at every turn.  They’re so jarring and seemingly appear whenever they damn while feel like it (usually when you’re in the menu screen). Frustrating doesn’t even begin to describe them. Not only will you be forced to watch a video for about 5 seconds before being able to skip, but another popup ad always follows, requiring you to press a small “X” in the corner to exit. Of course, these aren’t always the easiest to hit and more than often you’ll accidentally click the ad forwarding you to the Play Store. It’s annoying, and we can’t shake the feeling that they’re supposed to be.

The real price of admission

For a minimum of $4, ads can be removed from the game altogether, something I’ve strongly considered paying for simply to keep my sanity. Sega tries to sweeten the deal by including a gang of in-game currency. It’s a shame because the game is actually pretty solid, but if playing a Sonic game in between video ads sounds like a good time to you, you can download Sonic Dash for free in the Google Play Store.

T-Mobile Galaxy S4 gets Android 4.3 upgrade; Samsung plans Galaxy Gear upgrade for improved notifications

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 12:33 PM PST

Samsung Galaxy S4 TouchWiz

Joining a long line of Samsung phones getting Android 4.3 Jelly Bean recently is T-Mobile’s variant of the Samsung Galaxy S4. The upgrade is rolling out over-the-air starting today, and will bring the premium suite upgrades we’ve talked so much about before. This includes improvements to the camera, support for the Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watch, minor tweaks to TouchWiz and more.

The 781 megabyte update file means you’ll want to hit up a WiFi access point before pulling this thing down, and getting your battery charged to about 50% isn’t such a bad idea, either. Of course, not everyone will be in line to receive the upgrade at the same time thanks to a staggered rollout process. Fortunately, there’s another option for those of you impatient enough to wait.

You can manually update using the latest version of Samsung Kies, but remember that you must be unrooted and on stock M919UVUAMDL firmware. The new version should show M919UVUEMK2 once complete.

With that news, we’ve also learned that Samsung will soon be pushing out the latest Galaxy Gear smart watch upgrade to those of us here in America. Already available in Europe, this upgrade will bring improved notifications support. Whereas before you could only see full notifications from certain Samsung apps, this upgrade will allow you to read the full contents of a notification from pretty much any app. It’s a welcome, much-needed change that should go a long way toward improving the oft-criticized smart watch experience.

Other enhancements will include improved Smart Relay functionality, and likely other minor bug fixes that Samsung felt weren’t worth mentioning. No exact word on when to expect the upgrade, but we should be dancing with joy by the time our big Thanksgiving dinners have settled in our stomachs.

Get $25 Google Play Store credit with Nexus 7 (2013) purchase, Chromecast gets free HD movie rental

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 11:23 AM PST

Nexus 7 Chromecast Holiday promo

The holiday season is nearly upon us and with that, you can expect the usual slew of deals coming out of the woodwork. The Google Play Store is no exception and beginning today, when you purchase a Nexus 7 (all models) Google is throwing in a complimentary $25 Google Play credit. If the Nexus 7 is still too rich for your blood (or maybe everyone you know has been naughty this year), then the even more affordably priced Chromecast gets a special promo as well: free HD movie rental on the house ($6 or less).

As always, there’s some fine print:

  • Google Play Store credit must be added to an account by March 31st, 2014
  • Once added, the credit must be used up by March 31st, 2015
  • Promo codes will be emailed for purchases made online, as soon as they ship
  • If Chromecast is purchased in-store, promo codes will be printed on store receipt
  • Codes can be redeemed at play.google.com/redeem

Also, any hardware purchased from the Google Play Store starting today is returnable up until January 13th, 2014. For those that have just purchased a Nexus 7 (2013) or Chromecast within the last 15 days, you can return it and order another to receive the Google Play credit. Sorry, international friends. This is US and Canada only.

Nexus 7 on Google Play | Chromecast on Google Play

I guess the only question left is if purchased as a gift, will you be keeping the $25 Google Play credit (or $6 movie rental) for yourself, or generously gifting as well? Tis the season.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas coming to Android this December

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 10:29 AM PST

gta san andreas

We imagined Rockstar would someday complete the original PS2 Grand Theft Auto trilogy after bringing Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City to mobile, but we didn’t know how long it would take. Thankfully, we now know that it won’t be long before we’re treated to one of the biggest games in the history of the hobby on our mobile devices.

Rockstar has announced that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will be released next month for a variety of mobile platforms. Android was included in that list, though Rockstar was clear in mentioning that only “select” devices would be able to get in on the fun.

Alongside one of the most compelling collection of stories, characters and settings, Rockstar’s re-release will also feature “newly remastered graphics including dynamic and detailed shadows, greater draw distance, an enriched color palette, plus enhanced character and car models.” Rockstar says it’ll be the best looking rendition of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas yet.

Beyond visual fidelity, the game will also feature touch controls optimized for mobile devices, as well as support for gaming controllers for those who need a more traditional input option. There’s no word on cost just yet, but we imagine Rockstar won’t be asking for a ridiculous amount of your hard-earned money to revisit the classic fictional locales of Los Santos (Los Angeles), San Fierro (San Francisco) and Las Venturas (Las Vegas). Who else is as excited as I am right now?

Motorola Moto G now available in the US from Motorola.com starting at $179 unlocked

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 09:55 AM PST

moto-g-featured-LARGE

The Motorola Moto G was said to be making its way to the US before the end of January 2014, but Motorola decided that was a bit too long for some folks to wait. While we’ll still be awaiting Verizon’s version of the affordable smartphone, Motorola has no problem offering up the GSM version unlocked starting today.

You can head over to Motorola.com right now and order yours for $179 for the 8GB version, and $199 for 16GB. The device will not have a SIM lock, meaning you should be able to use it on any GSM carrier you want by simply swapping SIM cards. You’ll also be able to unlock its bootloader without hassle.

The Moto G doesn’t have the world’s most amazing specs, though that’s to be expected at such a cheap price point off-contract. Here’s what you can expect under the hood:

  • 4.5-inch 1,280 x 720 display
  • 1.2GHz quad-core processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 400)
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 8GB of internal storage
  • 5MP rear camera
  • 1.3MP front camera
  • 2,070mAh battery
  • Dimensions: 130 x 66 x 6-11.6 mm
  • Weight: 143 g
  • Android 4.3 Jelly Bean (KitKat guaranteed by end of January 2014)

And that’s it. Like I said, not amazing, but this’ll make a nice gift for new smartphone owners or someone who just doesn’t prefer to spend a ton of money on their smartphones. You can grab it at Motorola’s website right here.

Oppo N1′s CyanogenMod build will be the first to come with officially-licensed Google Apps

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 09:08 AM PST

Cid CM

A long while ago in the world of after-market ROM development, something unfortunate happened — Google decided they didn’t like their proprietary apps being packaged with ROM downloads without the distributor officially licensing them. As you might know, Android is open-source, but only to an extent.

Folks can download and build the source code as freely as they want to, but it’s not until you get the Gapps package — or Google Apps — that you get access to things like the Play Store, Gmail and more.

It’s something all OEMs have to go through, but you can understand why the development community wasn’t particularly fond of that process. That wasn’t much of an issue, though — folks were just as free to download Gapps packages separately and flash them on their own, giving them access to the Google Play Store and many other Google services on their favorite ROM.

But with CyanogenMod going “legit” with their new incorporation and teaming up with Oppo to provide CyanogenMod for the N1, the company decided it was time to stop beating around the bush and get hooked up with the official licenses and other legal necessities to have Gapps distributed with CyanogenMod.

504px-CyanogenMod_Cid.svg

We know this to be true of the package that will be released for Oppo N1 owners wishing to flash CyanogenMod or get the limited run of the phone with the ROM pre-installed, though we’re not yet sure if this will extend to folks flashing CM to other devices through something like the CyanogenMod Installer (which launched a couple of weeks ago).

This is especially significant for CyanogenMod considering the team’s ROM was the first major example Google used to make their point. The Mountain View company allegedly issued cease and desist letters a few years back asking the team to comply with their licensing rules or risk major legal action. That little snafu obviously didn’t spell doom for CyanogenMod, but it did happen.

We’ll be getting a line into the CyanogenMod team to see if we can’t find out more, but this unprecedented event shouldn’t go unnoticed. This is as big of a deal as the day that the team announced they were going to be forming a corporation with major funds behind them.

The craziest part is that this is still just the early beginning of something major, boys and girls. We’re still waiting to hear word on a supposed official “CyanogenMod phone” that is being worked on with a mystery hardware partner.

The latest rumors suggest the team is working with ex-Oppo vice president Pete Lau to create device that was built from the ground up for nothing but CyanogenMod. The team already halfway confirmed their plans, though we’ll have to wait for more pointed details in the future to know exactly what we’re in store for. Let’s just say it’s going to be an interesting couple of months from here on out.

Here’s the new CyanogenMod 10.2 boot animation, and it doesn’t look too shabby [VIDEO]

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 07:48 AM PST

In case you didn’t remember, the CyanogenMod team has started work on version 10.2 (which is the final Android 4.3 Jelly Bean release before the team starts focusing on the KitKat-based CM 11). Nightlies are already on their way to some folks, and it’s been discovered that the team decided to whip up a new boot animation for this major release.

You can find the animation in the YouTube video above, but what you’re looking at is what you’re going to get — something simple, clean, professional, and elegant. It features a rather authoritative photo of Cid, the CyanogenMod mascot, with a clockwise arrow circling it. Beneath that is the “CyanogenMod” text in the always-familiar typeface they like to use. It’s not too flashy, because it’s not supposed to blow your mind.

This is the image that’s going to represent the new, improved, and “official” CyanogenMod every time you boot your phone up. No more skateboarding bugdroids, and no more amateur animations: this is serious business, folks.

We’re not sure when to expect CyanogenMod 10.2 for the masses, but it’s worth noting that the Oppo N1 should have first dibs. The Chinese OEM of said phone is the first to officially support flashing of the custom ROM, and we have a feeling it won’t take much longer for the CM team to deliver the goods to that particular device. Watch the quick flick of the boot animation in the YouTube video above.

Google sending out second wave of Glass Explorer invites

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 06:39 AM PST

glass explorer invites

Ready for another chance to spend a crap ton of money on experimental products? Google is opening up their Glass Explorer program to a new wave of users, with the company sending email invites for those who signed up on their website to buy their way into the Glass Explorer program. Having the invite alone isn’t enough, though — you’ll also need $1,500 of disposable money for the privilege to own one of the most primitive pieces of tech out there.

Emails are being sent out with one-time-only invite codes, and the codes will only last for 7 days (meaning you’ll need to act fast, or miss out on this second chance at getting into the Explorer program). We’re not sure if another opportunity will come along before Google brings this thing to retail early next year, so jump on it if you just have to have your Glass unit as soon as possible. Check your email for the code if you previously signed up to be notified.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition now seeing Android 4.4 KitKat rollout

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 05:54 AM PST

Google Play Edition HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4

Yesterday, Samsung and HTC released the source code files for Android 4.4 KitKat for their respective Google Play Edition phones, which led us to believe that the upgrade to the latest version of Android wasn’t far behind. Indeed, HTC and Google confirmed that as they started rolling out Android 4.4 to the HTC One GPe-owning masses early that morning.

We’d still been waiting for Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition to get the rollout, but the wait is over — the phone is finally starting to see Android 4.4 KitKat! Many owners should be seeing the upgrade over-the-air, though if this rollout process is just as staggered as it’s been for Nexus devices then it’s possible you won’t see it right away.

We’re still searching for a direct download link for those who don’t mind sideloading the upgrade, but in the meantime you can try your luck at the OTA by hitting the Settings menu. Don’t forget to turn on WiFi and get charged up to 30-50% before giving it a go. Have at it!

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

[UPDATE: DROID Ultra, too] Motorola DROID Mini coming in white?

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 05:16 AM PST

motorola droid mini white

Verizon could be ready to introduce a new color option for folks who spring for the Mini variant in their latest DROID lineup. Twitter leakster @evleaks told us that much with this latest press render of the device in white. It’s an interesting look for the little guy, with Motorola typically sticking to darker tones when it comes to phones in the DROID lineup.

The source didn’t have much more information to share, but we imagine Verizon will want to get this thing out during the season where “white” is usually all over the place in the northern hemisphere. With that, there won’t be much more guesswork to do, as we’ll expect this to be identical to the current Motorola DROID Mini in terms of specs. Here’s what you’ll be greeted to:

  • 4.3-inch 720p display
  • 1.7GHz dual-core Motorola X8 processor with quad-core graphics
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16GB of internal storage
  • 10 megapixel RGBC camera w/ 2 megapixel front camera
  • WiFi N, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS
  • 2,000mAh battery

With that, we can also use the current DROID Mini to get a good idea of price. It’s going for $50 on a new two-year contract right now, or about $16 per month with no down payment if you get the phone through Verizon Edge. That’s not a bad price for a device in this size range. Let’s just hope it doesn’t take long for Verizon to unleash this thing for those who long for a brighter smartphone.

[Update]: Looks like the DROID Ultra is also getting the white treatment. DROID MAXX in line too, Verizon?

How to Report Malware or False Positives to Multiple Antivirus Vendors

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 02:27 AM PST

Most antivirus software users have encountered false positives (i.e. a clean product that was flagged as malware) as well as false negatives ( a genuine infection that your AV failed to detect).

In both cases the responsible thing is to report the problem to your AV vendor so they can fix it but often it is difficult to work out how to do this. This article shows you how for dozens of AV vendors including all the well known suppliers.

Google confirms new camera API for developers already in the works, Nexus 5 camera might soon improve with 3rd party help

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 05:39 PM PST

Nexus 5 camera

We’ve already covered the Nexus 5′s shooting capabilities in depth, giving you guys our camera review from Google’s latest flagship. While an average shooter overall, we ultimately ruled that it was the smartphone’s camera software holding the device back from photo greatness, not necessarily the hardware. The good news? It might soon better.

A few weeks ago, some left over code discovered in AOSP hinted that new camera APIs were in the works, but were scrapped right before the release of Android 4.4 KitKat. What happened? In an interview with CNET Google spokesperson Gina Scigliano not only confirmed the existence of these new APIs, but shed a little light on exactly how they’ll work.

According to Scigliano, Google will soon allow app developers to tap into 2 new camera features already baked deep inside Android: RAW image support and burst mode. Scigliano explains:

“Android’s latest camera HAL (hardware abstraction layer) and framework supports raw and burst-mode photography. We will expose a developer API [application programming interface] in a future release to expose more of the HAL functionality.”

Android camera HAL

You can see in the above diagram developers can skip stock Android’s image processing, instead using with their own software to communicate directly with a device’s camera hardware. With support for RAW images, developers (or users) could take uncompressed images and tweak them using their own apps and editors.

Burst mode? Well, it’s used for more than capturing action shots. For those unaware, it’s actually Android’s new burst mode makes KitKat’s new HDR+ shooting mode possible, taking a quick succession of images captured at varying exposures and combining them into one. This makes for an image that’s sharper and has greater dynamic range than a single shot.

So, exactly when can we expect Google to open up these new camera features to Android developers? Just like on XDA, an ETA wasn’t given. Google said only to expect the APIs to open up in a future software update. While it’s little consolation, at least now we know they’re coming, right?

SwiftKey 4.3.1 update brings new number pad options while squashing a handful of bugs

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 03:13 PM PST

SwiftKey Flow thumb

The last we heard from SwiftKey — makers of the one of the most popular keyboard replacements for Android devices — they had just introduced their big “Layouts for Living” update in the Play Store. The update allowed uses to customize the layout of the virtual keyboard to suit their tastes, whether it was a split layout for typing on larger tablets, or mini layouts for tiny smartphones. The craziest part is how the keyboard could now be undocked and moved about the display with ease.

SwiftKey 4.3.1 update

Today SwiftKey is introducing yet another update, giving users the option of showing the number pad (found on the secondary screen) on either the left or right of the phone. The new option can be found under “Themes & Layouts” where the default is the number pad on the right. Smaller changes include the reintroduction of the unique spacebar sound when pressed, and the “$” coming to non-US users. There were also a handful of force closes that have been patched up, so if you haven’t been using the SwiftKey because a previous update made things buggy, now’s the time to give it another shot.

Get a $30 HTC One on Verizon and Sprint for Black Friday (plus a chance to win a gold HTC One)

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 03:00 PM PST

htc one

Oh, you thought an OEM wouldn’t get in on the Black Friday fun? HTC wants to provide some awesome deals for the holidays, and they’re doing it with a great price on their flagship phone from earlier this year. It’s the HTC One, and it can be yours for just $30, so long as you’re willing to sign another two years of mobile life away to either Sprint or Verizon.

The HTC One is one of the few phones worthy of your attention this year when it comes to high-end beasts. It’s a 4.7-inch 1080p display with beautiful design and very respectable specs. The Snapdragon 600 inside — coupled with 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and an HTC UltraPixel camera — should be more than enough for most folks to get their mobile computing on.

Of course, even more beautiful would be the newly-announced golden HTC One. While you won’t be getting any sick Black Friday deals on that, HTC is giving you a chance to win one! Simply take a great photo with your phone and upload it online, and you’ll be entered for a chance to win.

You’ll have even more chances to win a regular HTC One each week through the holiday season, so it’s worth a decent shot. Go ahead and submit your entry at HTC’s website if you’re interested, and head to the source link for the aforementioned deals (the $30 price point will only be available this Friday and Saturday, with the price returning to $50 the few days before and after that).

Qualcomm Toq smartwatch is now officially available for pre-order

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 01:45 PM PST

Toq-7

It was back during Qualcomm’s LINQ developer conference in September that the company — normally known for making the mobile processors that power our smartphones and tablets — unveiled their all new consumer product, the Qualcomm Toq. Last week Qualcomm finally gave us pricing and a release date for the Toq, officially arriving on December 2nd for $350.

Today Qualcomm announced that the device is now officially available for pre-order from their Toq Store, where it will ship in 1-3 weeks. Credit cards will only be authorized at the time of purchase, the charges only taking place after the device has shipped.

Qualcomm Toq angles

While it’s still too early to judge if the Toq will be a success, it’s clear Qualcomm is taking a much different approach to the smartwatch than “kitchen sink” offerings like the Samsung Galaxy Gear. The Qualcomm Toq has a clear focus: provide users with a simple companion device to the smartphone that can deliver quick notifications, while offering multi-day battery life. Sounds like a winning combination to us.

Of course, whether or not consumers will smell what Qualcomm is cooking — and for that $350 price tag — is another story entirely. Something tells us the niche device isn’t targeting mainstream success (can’t imagine you’ll ever find one at your local Walmart). If they can work that price down a smidgen, we definitely be all over it. Until then, wearable computing isn’t for technophiles on a budget.

While many folks have been enjoying the next-gen re-release of the pirate-heavy Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, Ubisoft wants to try and capture a new audience — those on the cell phone front. The gaming studio is continuing their mobile endeavors with the first such game in the Assassin’s Creed series. Dubbed Assassin’s Creed Pirates, this game features the same themes of naval combat and pirate-fighting goodness that has people going nuts over the console release right now.

Themes only go so far, though. You can most likely expect Assassin’s Creed Pirates to be several rungs lower than the latest console versions in terms of graphics and gameplay, but at the right price this game could end up being a keeper for those times when you’re bored in a waiting room or looking for entertainment at Grandma’s house on Sunday.

The game launches December 5th in the Google Play Store, though we’ll have to wait until then to see just how much Ubisoft will be asking for the privilege to swing our swords and search for booty. The quick teaser is sitting above.

Remotte is the first remote controller for your Google Glass [KICKSTARTER]

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 12:11 PM PST

Google Glass is great, and it’s coming out early next year, but one group of folks thinks those interested in it shouldn’t have to be confined to using voice commands or the on-board touch pad for navigating the UI. That’s where Remotte comes in, the next Kickstarter hopeful that looks to be gaining a decent amount of steam.

Remotte is a wireless touchpad that interfaces with Google Glass and allows you to do everything your on-board touch pad can do, and more. It uses a variety of touch and ambient sensors to do all the dirty work, and gives you a multitude of gestures you can use for selecting items in the UI and navigating around.

Remotte isn’t just a Google Glass affair — the developers are working to make it compatible with as many popular computing products that they can, such as laptops, phones and tablets. Remotte won’t just be an idle aide to the Google Glass experience, either. The developers are looking to create robust APIs for both Android and iOS so developers can integrate Remotte functionality into all their apps.

The folks behind Remotte are looking for about $70,000, and are sitting at around $12,000 as of the time of this writing. They have 25 days to get the rest, so if you’re liking what you see here and want to stake your claim to one of your own, be sure to head to Kickstarter and pledge some dollars (where you’ll also find more of the gritty details on the how, the why, and all that other good stuff). Check it out in the video above.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years arrives on Android, download on Google Play for $16

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 11:53 AM PST

2013 has been a good year for Final Fantasy fans on Android. Back in June, we saw Square Enix release the HD remake of Final Fantasy IV into the Play Store. It was only a good 3 months later during TGS 2013 (Tokyo Game Show) that Squenix announced the sequel — Final Fantasy IV: The After Years — would also be making its way to Google Play. However, without a solid date, we were left guessing as when the title to arrive. Over the weekend, it finally happened. Final Fantasy IV: The After Years is now officially available for Android.

Final Fantasy IV The After Years Android

Like all Square Enix games ported from once $40 Nintendo DS titles, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years weighs in at a healthy $16. A full fledged RPG experience on your Android device, it doesn’t really fit into the same category as $2 endless runners or countless freemium title flooding Google Play — and that’s fine by me.  Guess it’s time to add Google Play Store gift cards to my Christmas wishlist.

Koush’s AllCast Beta 7 lets you cast to ALL the things; Chromecast not invited [VIDEO]

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 09:55 AM PST

When Google effectively shut down third party Chromecast apps with the latest changes to their API, it left folks like Koushik Dutta and his AllCast app hanging. The app had become useless, and there was nothing he could do about it (until Google ends up releasing an official API, of course). So instead of letting the project rot, Koushik had an even better idea — expand it!

As such, the developer has reintroduced AllCast as an app that can cast to ALL the things. In other words, the app is now used for streaming your content to an Xbox 360, Roku box, Apple TV, Samsung Smart TVs or any other DLNA-capable device. Funnily enough, the Chromecast does not yet fit that description, so there is no support for it yet.

The video shows that the app works pretty well for where it is (which is beta 7 as of the time of this writing). Content loads fast and plays smoothly, and should be a great alternative to easily playing content on your television. Koush humorously mentions that the beta will “self destruct” on December 1st, so you’ll want to download it as soon as possible in case he’s going to be taking it down at that point. Take a look at a quick demo of AllCast in action in the video embedded above.

Switching to Android from iPhone? Eric Schmidt has a few tips for you

iphone_to_android

We’ve talked a ton about switching from iPhone to Android in the past, and there are a vast amount of online resources which exist to help you do just that. But it’s not often that we get to hear the tips from the former CEO (now executive chairman) of Google give us his own tips and tricks. I’m talking about Eric Schmidt, the man who got Google through some of its biggest years before handing the reigns back to the co-founders.

Schmidt took to Google+ to post the wordy guide. He goes over the most important things, like transferring your contacts, setting up your email, and setting up two-step authorization on your Google account for added security. It’s not going to solve all of your problems or answer all of your questions, but this guide is a good starting point to get your feet wet with the world of Android. Head to the source link to check it out for yourself.

HTC One in gold goes official

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 06:39 AM PST

htc one gold

It looks like Apple might have started yet another trend that other OEMs will look to emulate. HTC has just announced a golden version of their 2013 flagship HTC One. It’s not the first time we’ve seen this stallion clad in gold-plated armor, as Gold Genie took it upon themselves to create an after-market modification of the phone a while ago (and HTC tried their hand at a limited edition run of it at a very premium price point).

But this is HTC’s official go-round at the golden version, and boy does it look nice. It’s not the shiny, flashy gold that you might expect, with HTC instead going for a more subtle, muted effect. It looks much nicer than the Gold Genie version judging by the photos, though we can’t imagine anyone would complain about getting it in either style.

Other than the eye-popping exteriors, though, this is the same phone we’ve been using and loving since it launched, with a 1080p HD 4.7-inch display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, HTC’s UltraPixel camera and more. HTC says the device will “become available across Europe with a number of partners,” though they didn’t have any further details to share about pricing and availability. Would you spring for this version despite the HTC One getting a bit long in the tooth?

Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 announced

GALAXY-GRAND2_031

Samsung has announced the existence of the Samsung Galaxy Grand 2, a big-sized smartphone with a moderate suite of specs. This device weighs in at 5.25 inches, and that sizable display (TFT) only pushes 1280 x 720 pixels. It’s big, but its specs clearly show it’s aimed right at the mid-range market that Samsung wants to fill. Here’s what you can expect out of the box:

  • 5.25-inch 720p display
  • 1.2GHz quad-core processor
  • 1.5GB of RAM
  • 8GB of internal storage
  • 8 megapixel camera with 1.9 megapixel front camera
  • WiFi N, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS
  • 2,600mAh battery
  • 146.8 x 75.3 x 8.9 mm, 163g
  • Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with TouchWiz

It won’t have the wolves howling at the moon, but the Galaxy Grand 2 should be a pretty nice device for those who want a big screen without the big price tag. Samsung hasn’t touched on pricing just yet, though we do get a small word on availability — you can get it in White, and Black and Pink, and it will be available in “selective” regions (meaning it’s probably going to end up in an emerging market). HTC One Google Play Edition gets Android 4.4 KitKat OTA; download it right now

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 04:30 AM PST

HTC-One-Google-Play-featured-LARGE

HTC and Google gave Google Play Edition HTC One owners something great to look forward to when they wake up this morning — Android 4.4 KitKat! The code drop happened at some point early this morning, and now the official rollout is going out over-the-air for all to download. All you’ll need is a WiFi connection and a decently charged battery. From there, a quick trip to the settings menu should get you on your way.

If, for whatever reason, you can’t find the OTA, you can always download and install the upgrade manually. It’s as simple as downloading this update package to the root directory of your phone’s internal storage and hitting the “update from phone storage” option in recovery. You can also do it over ADB if you prefer to do things the geeky way.

The upgrade clocks in at just over 300 megabytes, so go pop some popcorn and grab a refreshing drink while you wait for the entirety of this big puppy to be downloaded.

PS: alongside the aforementioned open-source code push for the HTC One GPe, the Samsung Galaxy S4 GPe also got its open-source code drop for KitKat. You can find that at Samsung’s site here. No word on when we can expect an OTA, but we reckon it won’t be far behind.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Website of the Week

Just Delete Me is a website that contains a directory of direct links where you can delete accounts from various web services. There's already an impressive list of services and the list is steadily growing. Just Delete Me doesn't do the work of deleting accounts, what it does do is rate how easy (or difficult) it is to untangle yourself from various web services, provides links to the web service unsubscribe page and, where available, has a "show info" link for each service adding more information about unsubscribing.

Listings are color coded, which lets you know at a glance if unsubscribing is Easy, Medium, Hard, or Impossible. The site is quite useful and will become more so as they grow and add additional web services.

App Review: CloudMagic, one of the best E-mail apps out there

Posted: 24 Nov 2013 11:43 AM PST

This image has no alt text

CloudMagic InboxI’ve got a confession to make: I still have a Yahoo! Mail account. You know how it goes, you’re young and stupid, typically choose a cool (soon to be lame) username, and end up giving it to some very important contacts. Contacts you want to maintain possibly for the rest of your life.

I don’t particularly use the account, and I don’t even remember the last time I needed to sign in. But whenever I think of it, there’s a bit of me that is worried for a simple reason: I don’t keep the account connected on my phone. The reason for that is I haven’t been a fan of any of the E-mail apps out there. And, to make matters worse, Yahoo! never managed to get their mobile web app right.

To my delight, I came across CloudMagic while browsing through XDA Developers. What struck me immediately was, simply put, the complete neatness of the app. Every font size was perfect, the shades of colors used in every area very carefully chosen. My immediate reaction was that this is what OEMs should look at when they build the E-mail apps that are shipped with their phones. CloudMagic follows the Android guidelines to a tee, and the result is an app that is amazingly intuitive.

The app supports Gmail/Google apps, Office 365, Yahoo!, Outlook, iCloud, Exchange and IMAP accounts, so it’s very unlikely that you aren’t covered. You are limited to adding only three accounts, though, which the developer says is because

CloudMagic creates a high performance index of your emails on the cloud to offer blazing fast search on mobile. We incur high server costs, hence the restriction.

CloudMagic conversation viewThe conversation view is very Gmail-like and a decent search is built in. You can set a passcode to protect your mails, but the best feature of all is the ability to set reminders by long-pressing the favorite-button, so as to get back to an important mail. On the whole, though, the app reminded me how good Gmail really is. I’ve grown highly accustomed to Gmail’s new inbox, which has helped cut down notifications tremendously. While the folders are available within CloudMagic, there’s no way, at least right now, to customize when notifications should be fired.

If you’re on the look for a non-Gmail E-mail app, I highly recommend giving CloudMagic a try.

Waze now has celebrities guiding you through the streets

waze kevin hart

Waze, the popular maps and navigation app that Google acquired earlier this year, has signed a deal with Universal Studios that would see actors promote their upcoming movies via the app by providing the voice behind the turn-by-turn navigation.

First up, we have comedian Kevin Hart who can be seen on screen when Ride Along releases in 2014. Here’s a video of his recording session. Personally, I wish Waze had tried to strike a deal with Last Vegas instead. It would have been so much cooler to have the option to listen to Robert De Niro or Morgan Freeman.

Also, there are a ton of roundabouts here in India. Good to know Waze has us covered too.
