Something a Little Frivolous: Have Hours of Online Fun With These Jigsaw Puzzles

Posted: 27 Dec 2013 12:44 AM PST

It's the festive season so I thought I'd feature something of interest to all family members. As it turns out the item I've chosen is one of the highest rated rated articles at Gizmo's Freeware.

"If you enjoy jigsaw puzzles, take a look at this online collection of Flash-based puzzles, ready to solve simply by dragging with your PC's mouse.

Unlike traditional box-based puzzles, these online versions have a number of advantages. Having chosen your picture from the thousands on offer, you can then choose how many pieces you want. In the image below I've opted for 20, but you can choose 2000 if you're feeling brave! You can save part-completed puzzles to return to later, and there's never any chance of there being a piece missing!

All in all, it's a great online puzzle experience with nothing to download and install. It'll run in any browser that supports Flash."

Google takes aim at Apple-backed, patent trolling Rockstar consortium in new lawsuit

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 07:11 PM PST

IT-Support-Microsoft-Apple-Blackberry4

The patent wars continued today, this time with Google leading the offensive in a countersuit against Rockstar. For those unaware, Rockstar is a patent trolling holding company that just so happens to be owned by such bigwigs as Microsoft, BlackBerry, Sony and yes, Apple.

With more than 6,000 patents at their disposal, it was in late October that the inevitable happened: Rockstar officially threw the first stone, targeting Android OEMs like Samsung, HTC, and LG. According to Rockstar, many of these manufacturers’ devices infringed on several of their patents, some relating to common smartphone features like "mobile hotspot functionality,"  or "Messaging and Notification." Sounds like just about every smartphone on the planet is infringing, right?

That’s exactly how Google feels. In the countersuit, Google had no problem calling out Rockstar on their BS, saying in their complaint:

“Rockstar produces no products and practices no patents. Instead, Rockstar employs a staff of engineers in Ontario, Canada, who examine other companies’ successful products to find anything that Rockstar might use to demand and extract licenses to its patents under threat of litigation.”

If there was any question Rockstar has been specifically targeting Android devices — with so many patents, just about any smartphone could be found “infringing” — Google made sure to emphasize this in a section from their filing titled “Rockstar’s Campaign Against Android.” Ha.

It’s clear Google’s suit against Rockstar is aimed at simply defending Android and their business partners, a strategy Google also hoped to employ with their bid of Nortel’s patents back in 2011. There’s no question the Rockstar consortium, at worst, poses a real threat to Android and even the Nexus program. Google asked the court to clear not only Android of any wrong doing, but specifically named their devices like the Nexus 5, 7, and 10.

It’s entirely possible Android OEMs cave and work out licensing deals with Rockstar, but something tells me this is just the beginning of another long, drawn-out legal battle. #AndroidProblems.

Samsung is here with an infographic of their own, highlights their evolution in mobile display tech

After becoming a household name in providing some of the highest quality television displays on the market, I think it goes without saying that Samsung is very proud of their display unit. It wasn’t until fairly recently Samsung moved onto conquering the mobile display market, providing some of the best displays not just for their own devices, but even those found in Apple’s products. To highlight their achievements in this segment, Samsung took to their blog with an infograph of their own (we already saw one from HTC earlier this afternoon). Let’s have a look.

Infographic-History-of-Samsung-Mobile-Phones-Evolution-of-Display

Have to admit, as someone who passed on this generation Galaxy device in favor of the HTC One/ Nexus 5, I certainly envy my friends’ Samsung Galaxy S4s. While TouchWiz has never quite been for me, one of the best software features Samsung included was the ability to choose the saturation output in the display settings. It’s this feature that squashes complaints that SAMOLED is overly saturated and has me drooling over next year’s inevitable Samsung Galaxy S5 release.

HP Chromebook 11 returning to retailers, Amazon-only for now

We’ve been following the HP Chromebook 11 since the device officially announced back in October. Since then, we watched as reports of faulty chargers prompted retailers to pull the laptop from their shelves, eventually leading to a full recall of all chargers sold with the Chromebook 11 a few weeks back.

After all that drama, the Chromebook 11 is now officially making way its way back to retailers, the first of which being Amazon who is once again listing the laptop as “in stock” and for $280 on their site. Still nothing from Google Play or Best Buy, but we imagine it wont be too much longer before you can pick one up from them as well.

Alleged 3D model of HTC M8 (HTC One 2) pictured

HTC M8 wax 3d print model

No, HTC hasn’t begun selling bars of soap in the shape of their Android handsets, what you’re looking at before you is an alleged wax sculpture of the upcoming HTC M8, better known as the HTC One sequel (or HTC Two, or HTC One 2 — whatever you wanna call it).

According to the poster of the original image (which has since been removed from the Chinese blogging site Sina Weibo), this wax sculpture was based on a 1:1 3D model of the M8, more than likely used by Chinese accessory manufacturers. How this person was able to secure images of, or make a wax model is anyone’s guess, so for now, we’ll take it with a grain of salt.

The only thing we really know is that the release of HTC’s followup to their hottest Android to-date is imminent, given the February announcement of the previous flagship. In order to get the jump on the competition, we’d expect HTC to follow that same timing, only minus the manufacturing delays that plagued the HTC One’s launch initially.

Rumored specs for the M8 are exactly what you’d expect of a flagship in 2014, although you’ll notice the absence of an HTC One Max-like fingerprint scanner. One thing that is easy to make out is a dual-LED flash on the back, similar to the white/amber combo used on the iPhone 5s to help better adjust to the surrounding light. Interesting…

HTC gives us a behind the scenes look at the Android OS update process [INFOGRAPH]

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 12:27 PM PST

HTC One KitKat Status

HTC is going fully transparent in their latest infograph explaining the entire process that goes into updating their devices to the latest version of Android. Devices are broken down into 3 main categories: carrier devices, unlocked/developer editions, and Google Play editions.

In the infograph, it’s easy to follow all the individual stages of development, starting from when Google first provides the source code to the eventual OTA update that gets pushed out to customers’ devices. Besides being fun to look at, we found it extremely interesting to see all the behind the scenes work that goes into updating the Android OS on these devices. They even created a new landing page for interested parties to visit and see the current status of Android 4.4 KitKat on their favorite HTC devices.

HTC must be delegating a lot of manpower to getting these updates out and for them to be one of the first OEMs out the gate with Android 4.4 KitKat on the HTC One, well, it’s definitely commendable. Full info graphic below.

What’s the best Android phone of 2013? You decided! [Readers' Choice]

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 12:12 PM PST

best android phone 2013

After a few long, hard days of voting at the polls, you guys weighed in on the top Android phones of 2013 and let your voice be heard. We tallied up the votes — over 8,400 of them — and it’s time to reveal what you all considered to be the best Android phones of 2013. We’ll first take a look at and talk about the top five phones, and then we’ll reveal the full breakdown once we’re doing yappin’. Let’s get to it!

5 –   LG G2

This was a personal favorite of our own Edgar Cervantes. The LG G2 was LG’s first phone following the Korean company’s new device strategy. They opted to streamline their portfolio and focus on just a few devices, and the G2 ended up being the one to lead the way. The device featured a 5.2-inch 1080p HD display, a Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 13 megapixel camera and more.

4 – Motorola Moto X

Motorola was another company that decided they had enough of their failing device strategy, and sought to do something about it with a major change. That’s what brought us the Moto X, a phone that breaks all the rules in all the right ways.

Motorola broke those rules by offering truly customizable phones, giving buyers tons of color combinations to make a phone that’s uniquely theirs. Of course, those options didn’t come to everyone immediately (AT&T had a timed exclusive and everyone had to wait quite some time on the wooden back plates), but it was better late than never.

moto-x-featured-LARGE

They broke more rules by declaring that the specs war was irrelevant. That declaration was made by the Motorola X8 computing system, which was a custom dual-core SoC by Qualcomm outfitted with two other separate cores — one that enables the low-power always-listening voice commands, and one that “listened” for gestures for things like activating the camera and automatically enabling and disabling Active Notifications.

Let’s not forget the company’s breakneck speed in getting Android 4.4 KitKat rolled out, a pace that not even most of the Nexus devices out there can say they were able to match (although they weren’t very far behind). Simply put, we like the new Google-backed Motorola, and so did a great deal of you based on the reception the Moto X got in this poll.

3 – HTC One

HTC came into 2013 on a mission — to stop drowning the market with tons of smartphone releases. Like Motorola and LG, they wanted to streamline their portfolio and focus on just a few key devices to maximize marketing and development efforts. The result of that is the HTC One, a beautiful 4.7-inch device that still has folks in smartphone bliss today.

HTC One rocks

The device’s aluminum chassis, crisp 1080p display, and solid internals have kept it going this far. It had a Snapdragon 600 processor and 2GB of RAM, which is enough to do just about anything in this day and age. And while the HTC One got some flak for lack of removable battery and no expandable storage, that particular configuration has become a bit of an industry trend, so no harm no foul.

2 – Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Part of me wants to believe that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is favored because of the ridiculousness of it. A massive 5.7-inch 1080p display, a Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM, USB 3.0 and more. We weren’t terribly surprised as the latest Note phones are always a bit ahead of their time, but Samsung pulled out all of the stops that literally no one else did.

note3-screen-featured-LARGE

In terms of everything else (software and overaal features), the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 didn’t really deliver anything that we haven’t already seen out of the Samsung Galaxy S4, but the South Korean company tightened everything up to bring us one solid, yet familiar experience.

1 – Nexus 5

While some may argue that the Nexus 5 has an unfair advantage, the facts can’t be ignored — it’s damned hard to find a better package than this for its cost. For as little as $350, you’re getting a 5-inch 1080p HD display with a Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM.

You’re getting KitKat in its purest form, with a couple of exclusive bits (such as the new Google Experience Launcher) added in. You’re getting updates right from the horse’s mouth.

Nexus 5 games

The Nexus 5′s journey was interesting, with its fair share of problems well-documented among worrywarts everywhere. Not the least of those problems was the device’s camera, which suffered from slow shutter speeds, slow startup times and poor low-light performance. A great deal of those issues were later eradicated with a software upgrade.

The Nexus 5 has also been knocked for its weak speaker, questionable battery life and more. The sum of all those things might scare most folks off, but there’s little doubt Google will look to improve the experience with more upgrades over time.

Regardless, the fact that the Nexus 5 was able to snap up the #1 spot with that kind of uncertainty speaks volumes about the value of the Nexus brand around the Android community. Way to go, LG and Google.

The Rest

Want to see how everything else fared? Here’s the full breakdown of votes, sorted from most to least:

votes chart

The Nexus 5 took up a whopping 25% of the votes, which is pretty impressive considering we collected over 8,000 of them. The race was a bit tighter the further down the list we go, with the Note 3, HTC One, and Moto X all coming in with just over 100 votes ahead of the next guy.

Looking at some of the unsung heroes, you can see that the Samsung Galaxy S4 still took a respectable sixth place, beating out the likes of the DROID MAXX by more than 6%. Beyond that, votes were spread thin between the rest of the pack. It’s worth noting that quite a few of the votes in that “other” category were for the Moto G, which lends credence to the fact that the price/performance ratio that phone provides is just as satisfactory as Motorola advertised.

2014 and beyond

And that’s a wrap for 2013, folks. We’re riding high into 2014, with the first order of business being what should be a phone-filled, fun-filled CES in Las Vegas. We’ll be hitting that rodeo up to bring you all the latest that these companies and more will have to offer for what should be yet another great year in tech. In the meantime, let’s hear your thoughts about the way these results turned out in the comments below!

AOKP and Paranoid Android ROMs updated with early KitKat builds

AOKP Paranoid Android collage

Over the Christmas holiday, while you were sipping on eggnog and spending some time off with the family, popular custom ROMs AOKP and Paranoid Android saw the release of their first KitKat builds.

Paranoid Android was first out the gate, announcing the beta release of their ROM, packing only a bare bones KitKat experience. Don’t worry, PA promises the usual goodies (Hybrid Engine, HALO, PIE) will be making their way to the ROM eventually, so check up with them for future updates.

AOKP was very much the same, releasing nightlies of Android 4.4.2, again, without the usual customizations and enhancements that make their ROM so popular. Really, this is only for those that love fiddling around their devices and want the absolute latest version of Android possible, no matter the cost. For the adventurous flashers, download links provided below.

Could these three trademarks suggest Samsung is bringing new devices to CES?

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST

It’s been recently discovered that Samsung has trademarked three new names in relation to, well, all things personal electronics. Filed on December 17th, the three trademark filings don’t give us any solid information as to what they could be, but it’s fun to imagine what we might be seeing at some point in the near or distant future. Here are the three names if you’re curious:

  • Showplace
  • Infinitude
  • Panagon

Believe me when I say you’re not alone in thinking that these sound nothing like names Samsung would use for devices. They could be code names for all we know, but it’s a bit odd for a company to trademark three throwaway names.

Could these be new tablets? Phones? AIO desktop computers? A competitor to Google Glass? Some cool accessory? The world may never know, but we’re hoping the Korean company is coming to CES with more than just their dreams and ambitions. We know it can’t be the next flagship phone, aka the Samsung Galaxy S5 — that particular device is headed straight for Mobile World Congress.

Samsung’s also rumored to be coming to town with a couple of Android tablets, including a new Samsung Galaxy Note Pro that might have a massive 12.2 inch display. Of course, any guess is a stab in the dark at this point, so we’ll just have to stay tuned to see if any of these names mean anything at all.

The full list of games and apps is large, so you’ll want to head over to the Google Play Store to check them all out. A few of the highlights include Monopoly Bingo, Tetris Blitz, Asphalt 8, True Blood pilot, and a whole lot more. Don’t take it all in too fast!

Report: Samsung now mass producing 5.25-inch 2560 x 1440 for the Galaxy S5

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 11:12 AM PST

samsung-logo

As we close in on a possible February announcement for the Samsung Galaxy S5, more and more reports about its hardware and specs are bound to leak out. This time, a report out of Korean outlet DDaily suggests Samsung has started mass producing a 5.25-inch 2560 x 1440 display, likely for use in the next generation of the Galaxy S line.

The display is only a hair above the 5-inch panel found on the Galaxy S4. Samsung might be pulling the same thing they pulled with the Galaxy Note 3 — that is, increasing the display size without increasing the size of the overall phone. In any case, we’re glad they have decided to keep the device close to 5 inches than 6, wisely leaving room for the Galaxy Note 3 to shine in its own category.

The Galaxy S5 is rumored to be coming with a 64-bit version of Samsung’s quad-core octa-core processor, though it’s entirely possible we’ll see a Snapdragon 800 inside as well. We’re also expecting 3GB of RAM and likely a 13 megapixel camera sensor.

Of course, we’d prefer to wait until Samsung announces the details officially before we assume too much, so we’ll be doing just that. Circle back around February as we expect all of this will go down at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

My Disney Experience [REVIEW]

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 10:27 AM PST

Disney Magic BandsI recently had the privilege of visiting the happiest place on earth, Disney World in Orlando, FL.  It was the first time I was back since 2006 and aside from the obvious theme park renovations Disney makes to keep their parks current, they had made a major change as well.

Disney had implemented FastPass+ which works in conjunction with their app, My Disney Experience, and these fancy new wristbands called MagicBands.

The newly implemented MagicBands are very cool as they control pretty much everything.  Your meal plan, purchases, park admission, your room key (if you stay on resort) and of course FastPass+ entry are all controlled with just a swipe of the wrist.  But honestly the wristbands aren't even the coolest new enhancement at Disney, it's the My Disney Experience app which is a must have for anyone visiting Disney!

The My Disney Experience app offers users the ability to see the entire resort map, things to do, current wait times, park hours and even what characters are where and when in each of the theme parks.  But even more importantly the app allows users to setup FastPass+ times, dining reservations and setup an itinerary for each day to ensure that you don't miss anything you want to do.

Maps

My Disney Experience Map

As you would expect with the mapping features, they utilize the GPS functionality of your smartphone to pinpoint exactly where you are on the Disney resort.  This feature is immediately available when you open the app and are greeted with the option of "Here & Now" which will use your GPS to show you what is happening currently where you are on the resort.

Aside from the "Here & Now" function, the app kicks it up a notch by allowing sub-sections to be mapped as well.  For example, if I go to the "Things to Do" or "Wait Times" listings, I can select "Map" in either of these lists and it will convert the list to points on a map.  This makes it incredibly easy to find activities that are already close to you since traveling throughout the resort can be very time consuming.

Explore

Throughout the app you have the ability to filter, sort or explore to easily find the information you're looking for.  An example would be in the "Characters Today" section of the app.  You can sort by name of the character, schedule times or location to easily find what you're looking for.

Or you can filter to only show characters in a particular location or at a particular time.  Also from this screen you can change the theme park and/or activity at the top of the screen.  Doing so easily lets you toggle between attractions, characters, dining, entertainment, events & tours, restrooms, etc. at any of the parks.

Reservations/FastPass+

Probably the most important feature I found in the app was the ability to make restaurant reservations and FastPass+ selections.  Disney can be an incredibly busy place and it really pays to take the time to make reservations and FastPass+ selections ahead of time.  However, plans can change on the fly and the app makes it easy to facilitate those changes.

Throughout the day I often found myself re-scheduling my FastPass+ times or even changing the rides themselves.  You can manage each of your parties’ bands individually as well, so if your teenagers wanted to ride a coaster at the same time you wanted to visit "it's a small world," it's easy to give everyone their own plans.

For dinner, a majority of the reservations I made were made on the fly by checking in the app what restaurants had availability at the time we expected to eat.  With that said, I really do recommend making your reservations in advance and trying to stick to them.  Occasionally you will find yourself without a place to eat if you expect to dictate your dinnertime at the last minute.

My Disney Experience ToDo

Additional Features

The My Disney Experience App really takes vacation planning/management to a whole new level.  As you're surfing through the app you can tap on rides and/or shows and see additional information about the height requirements, thrill factor and who it may be fun for.

You can even tap the little heart icon and it will add the ride to your wishlist for easy tracking of what you want to do during your trip.  Additionally you can add friends to a "friends list" so that you can coordinate ride times and/or dinnertimes with people outside your party.  You can manage payment methods linked to your band or deactivate a band or report it as lost.

Overall this app absolutely rocks.  It made navigating Disney so much easier.  It looks like Disney really spent the time to develop an app that could let you manage any aspect of your trip on the fly.  My only real gripe is the load times when going in-between screens and the occasional partial load (where the screen loads the framework, but not the content).

Typically if you exit the app and immediately re-open it these bugs will go away.  These small bugs aside, I would recommend this app as a must have for anyone planning a trip to Walt Disney World (or Disneyland).

Android Etch campaign funded, delivers Androidified pint glasses just in time for Christmas

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 09:44 AM PST

Android Etch

Back in October, we told you about Android Etch, an Indiegogo campaign set on using lasers to engrave the Android Bugdroid logo on as many goods as possible. Joshua Munoz, the company’s founder, is no stranger to engraving the Android logo on pint glasses, previously using a chemical rub to do so. While cheap and easy to do, the problem with this method arises when you’re looking to crank it up a notch and mass produce them. Time and consistency then become an issue. To solve this, Josh took to Indiegogo to seek funding for a laser engraving machine which would fulfill his small company’s dream to professionally etch the Android logo everywhere.

The Android Etch project was partially funded a few weeks back, allowing Josh to use the funds raised to get started. Backers will be happy to know that Josh purchased his laser engraver a few weeks ago and has been doing what he does best, etching the Android Bugdroid logo on pint glasses, with lasers (pew pew pew). Android Etch tells us that they were working extremely hard to get these pint glasses out for Christmas, as some backers were planning on giving them out as gifts. The wait is finally over, backers are starting to chime in that they’ve received their perks as promised. Did you get yours? Let us know in the comments.

Android Etch Shipping

If you missed out on the Android Etch pre-order campaign and would like an Android etched pint glass, soon the new company will be launching an online store for fellow Android enthusiasts. We’ll keep you updated.

Santa will be using Google Glass to find your chimney this Christmas

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 08:48 AM PST

santa google glass

We’re on the eve of Christmas, and the Google Santa tracker shows that the big guy from the North Pole has finally gotten all his affairs together and taken off for the holidays. It looks like Santa will be adding a new tool to his repertoire for helping him find his way to healthy helpings of milk and cookies this holiday season — Google Glass!

We imagine it’ll be important for ol’ St. Nick to have some sort of heads-up display to help him get around at night. It’s hard to maneuver that sleigh and those reindeer through all those trees and rooftops, so perhaps he has his own special version of Google Maps that can help him navigate the air. He could also have his helpful little elves develop an augmented reality app to help point out those who’re naughty vs those who’re nice.

Imagination aside, if you’re looking for something that might help get you into the Christmas spirit, seeing the “final prep” process Santa takes might be just the trick to do it. Watch the jolly fellow take care of the final steps on his checklist (including fitting himself with a nice pair of Google Glass before taking off in his sleigh of awesomeness) over at the source link.

MTV app brings full episodic content to your Android device

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 07:11 AM PST

mtv app

MTV junkies rejoice: a new Android app is waiting for you in the Google Play Store. It’s the official app to the music television station that barely plays music videos anymore, and it will bring you full episodes of shows like the Real World and Teen Wolf. You’ll also get yearly VMA coverage and access to other clips and extras that you’d normally have to venture off to the company’s website to get.

More than that, you’ll get a “viewing companion” which will feed up various bits of info about whatever show you’re watching, including info about the characters, songs used in the show and other insider info. You’ll also be treated to quizzes and trivia — you know, just to make sure you’re paying attention.

The app is free, of course, so head to the Google Play Store and grab it as soon as possible if you can’t stand to be without MTV content while you’re away from home.

Nokia Normandy was going to be available in tons of colors

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 06:20 AM PST

nokia normandy

Although Nokia is rumored to be scrapping plans to be bringing an Android phone, we’re still seeing leaks about the Nokia Normandy. If you don’t remember, this was to be a mid-range Android phone, but due to Microsoft’s purchase of the Finnish company we may never see it launch.

We still have no clue what sort of specs were supposed to be inside this thing, but it doesn’t sound like it was supposed to be impressive. We do know that Nokia was looking to provide it in multiple color options, though, with @evleaks giving us a look at the full spectrum of colors in a leaked press render.

Despite the fact that this thing may never see the light of day, Nokia still has to have egg on their face for the Finnish boys peeing in their pants comment. No, Anssi Vanjoki, I will never forget that comment. That Nokia was thinking about making an Android phone at all completely negates anything they ever said to try and discredit the mobile operating system’s dominance.

With Nokia being a lone wolf in the Windows Phone race under Microsoft’s banner, they probably won’t be thinking too much about using other operating systems to help them keep warmth in their pants this winter. But just know that they were thinking about doing it anyway.

What a year this has been. For the first time in recent memory, PC sales have declined. Not only declined but declined continuously in each of the three quarters of 2013 for which we have records.

The causes are well known: the replacement of PCs by tablets and smartphones, the market failure of Windows 8, a flat world economy and significantly, the fact that many users now see their existing PCs as good enough for the tasks they carry out and hence don't need to be replaced.

This dramatic new trend in hardware sales reflects an equally dramatic change in computer software. The traditional market for Windows utilities obtained through download sites is being replaced by apps downloaded from centralized stores operated by Apple, Google and Microsoft. Furthermore most of these apps are free or priced very low.

This rapid change in the market has meant that we have had to make significant changes here at Gizmo's Freeware. You will have noticed that mobile apps are now more prominent on the site and will become even more so from early next year when we change the site design to a responsive layout that provides better access for those with small screen devices.

However be assured; none of these adjustments in our coverage will change our focus on free Windows desktop utilities. These will remain at the heart of our mission even if they do have to share the stage with mobile apps.

So 2014 is going to bring significant challenges to this site if we are to better meet the needs of our 35 million plus annual site visitors. However Gizmo's Freeware has always been a strong community site so with your assistance and patience I'm sure we can meet these challenges and make the site better than ever.

As the year draws to an end I'd like to thank all our regular users for their loyalty and contribution through their thousands of posts and comments. I'd also like to thank our volunteer editors and tireless moderators without whose efforts, this site could not exist.

To all of you scattered across the world in 141 different countries, I wish a healthy, peaceful and prosperous New Year.

Forgotten Nexus Q gets Android 4.4 KitKat courtesy of CyanogenMod 11

Nexus-Q-tv

It’s been awhile since the Nexus Q was first “released”, given away to attendees of the 2012 Google I/O developer conference. Despite never officially ever going up for sale, some owners simply aren’t ready to quit the Nexus program’s redheaded stepchild.

An expensive way to stream your online media to your TV, it was essentially the Chromecast before it was cool. Leave it to those mad geniuses at XDA who’ve found a way to shoehorn Android 4.4 KitKat onto the device, because…. you know, Android.

Made possible via CM11, it really doesn’t take much to get up and running with KitKat. Just need to know your way around ADB. Keep in mind the Google Play Music app is a bit finicky, as well as Chrome. A simple sideload of the latest Chrome app for smartphones seems to fix everything up however. Have fun!

HP planning to release new smartphones before the end of the year [RUMOR]

hp-slate-7-1

Despite things not turning out so well the last time we saw an HP-built smartphone, the manufacturer might have plans to reenter the space. According The Information — an online publication who prides themselves on getting the “inside scoop” on tech news — HP could be planning to soon release a new phablet line before the end of the year.

These big-screened smartphones would feature display sizes of 6 and 7 inches, just don’t expect Galaxy Note-like prices. Apparently, HP’s gunning for emerging markets with these big fellas, slated for release in countries like India, China, and the Philippines, at a price point between $200 and $250.

While there wasn’t any word that these devices would actually feature Android as their operating system of choice, we think it only makes sense given the recently released HP Slate tabs rocking Jelly Bean.

The Sega Dreamcast will forever hold a special place in our heart. With the help of the new Reicast Dreamcast emulator, you can now play all the hottest games from 1999, straight on your Android smartphone or tablet.

The developer recommends having a device with at least a 1GHz+ dual-core Cortex A9 chipset for optimal play, and even provides some quick instructions on how to get the BIOS up and running on your Android in the Play Store listing. Just keep in mind Reicast is still in its alpha stages but for the adventurous, you can download it via the Play Store link below.

Samsung’s latest Galaxy Gear ad might be the worst of the year [VIDEO]

Weird Galaxy Gear ad

We’ve been a little apprehensive about the Samsung Galaxy Gear and the real usefulness it offers outside the hardcore tech crowd. A smartwatch that has been struggling to hit mainstream success (compatibility outside Galaxy devices hasn’t helped), one area Samsung really knocked it out of the ballpark was in the initial ad spots that accompanied the Galaxy Gear’s release back in October.

No matter your thoughts on the wearable, Samsung’s clever use of nostalgia from our favorite television shows really struck a chord with us. Maybe that’s why Samsung’s latest ad for the Gear felt so… weird. There’s really no better way to describe it. Titled “Are You Geared Up?”, the cringe-worthy video features a strapping young fella who is able to win the affections of a beautiful young lass by showing her all the cool things he can do with his Galaxy Gear. Yeah. You’re going to want to watch the video below.

The craziest part is this isn’t even the strangest ad Samsung has published this year. A few weeks ago, Samsung’s ad for their latest solid state drive began buzzing around the net for all the wrong reasons. Besides those who found the ad a bit sexist (it’s since been pulled, but you can find it here), it features acting and mannerisms about as awkward as we saw in the latest Galaxy Gear ad.

To be fair, the actor in the SSD video made an attempt to vindicate himself on Reddit, where he mentioned this type of “cheesy acting” was exactly what Samsung’s production company asked for. He went on to explain that the ad was never meant for US audiences, but was merely a promotional video for non-native English speakers. Fair enough.

What do you guys think? When it comes to the latest Galaxy Gear video, do we have a contender for “worst ad of the year” on our hands? Before you decide, you might want to check out Nokia’s creepy “mullet” ad for their Lumia 2520.

  • The latest Android security enhancements, matched with Sony's mobile enterprise solution: Xperia in Business

  • Increased user control for Xperia Tablet Z, with "Restricted Profiles"; option to createisolated, secure spaces with individual local storage, home screens, widgets and settings

And Sony says not to worry — Android 4.4 KitKat for the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 are all still coming at some point in the near future. For now, enjoy Jelly Bean and everything it comes with by checking for the upgrade in the settings menu of your phone. Koush’s AllCast hits the Google Play Store

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 10:23 AM PST

Koushik Dutta’s “AllCast” app has been on a very interesting journey thus far. It started off as a Chromecast-equipped media streamer that would allow you to get your content up on the big screen using the $35 HDMI dongle. Google effectively killed the app by blocking third-party access to unofficial APIs, though, leaving AllCast pretty useless.

That wasn’t going to slow Koush down, as the developer roared back with an app that was made to cast your media to ALL the things. Ironically enough, the Chromecast was not included in the list of devices that could be used to stream content from your mobile device. That version of the app has finally exited beta, and is sitting in the Google Play Store for all to download.

Here’s a quick list of what you can cast to, in case you’ve forgotten:

  • Roku
  • Apple TV
  • Xbox 360, Xbox One
  • Samsung Smart TVs
  • Panasonic Smart TVs
  • Google TV (Logitech Revue, etc)
  • DLNA Renderers

That’s no small crop of devices. Fittingly enough, Koush capped off his Google+ announcement with the following line: “Chromecast support coming someday. I hope.” We hope so, too, bro. AllCast can be had in both free and premium (no video length limits, no ads, and no overlays) flavors in the Google Play Store.

ASUS teasing dual-boot tablet ahead of CES; Android and Windows in tow? [VIDEO]

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 09:02 AM PST

It looks like ASUS can’t get enough device convergence, as the Taiwanese company is gearing up to bring us yet another dual-booting hybrid convertible doohickey. This time, they’re teasing a device that might dual boot both Windows and Android.

They did so with a video short of the Statue of Liberty holding up both a blue and a green device. The caption? “Green or Blue? One or Two?” It sounds like they’re going to be giving us the goods we want in one solid package.

So what can we expect? This isn’t the first time we’ve seen ASUS try something like this, with the company’s Transformer Book Trio giving you a similar dual-boot option. The caveat was that you had to be in laptop mode to gain access to both on-board operating systems.

We imagine ASUS has found a way to do away with that requirement, so a brand new product to unveil that achievement is most certainly warranted. It’s all going down at CES starting January 6th, and you know we’ll be there to take it all in live. Watch the quick teaser above.

Final Fantasy 6 coming to Android — first trailer hits YouTube [VIDEO]

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 07:35 AM PST

Square Enix is bringing another 16-bit classic to our beloved platform soon, with the game developer revealing that Final Fantasy 6 will be making its way to Android sometime soon. The first trailer for the new-age port has gone up on YouTube, giving us a glimpse at the game with improved sprites. It’s familiar, yet fresh, and gives us a nostalgic high that not many other games could.

Square Enix says this thing is headed to us this winter, though it looks like we’ll be waiting until the new year to see it rolled out. We’ll also probably have to wait a big longer than our Japanese counterparts will.

If Square Enix’s previous launches are anything to go by, you’ll probably be paying more than $10 or $15 for the privilege of playing. If that doesn’t scare you off, though, you should get your affairs in order and prepare to lose hours of your life playing this. Watch the trailer above, and if you want to check out the previous releases be sure to catch them on sale for up to 50% off.

Disney puts 12 games on sale for $.49, grab them while you can

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 06:35 AM PST

In case you haven’t realized it, Disney has a pretty big presence in the Google Play Store. If it’s not cute brain puzzlers like Where’s My Water and Where’s My Perry, it’s Disney-infused versions of games like Temple Run: Oz and Temple Run: Brave. No matter what your taste is, though, you can grab all of their paid titles on sale for a limited time.

Disney_Logo

They’re all $.49, which is a small price to pay for the hours of time-draining fun these games can provide. Here’s the full list of titles up for grabs at this irresistible price point (there are 12 in all):

These titles are normally $2-3, so you’re saving more than just a few pieces of copper if you decide to bite on any of them. It’s also worth noting that some of these titles are available in free flavoring, though you can expect ads for the privilege of not having to pay out of your pocket. Be sure to take a look at Disney’s full list of titles available in the Google Play Store.

Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2-inch Android tablet leaked

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 06:05 AM PST

Samsung’s new best friend — that is, their highly successful Note series of devices — has been good to them. The latest phone entry was good enough to join the 10 million sales club alongside the Note 2, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and more. Now, it looks like Samsung is about ready to bring us another Note tablet.

samsung galaxy note pro

A photo of a supposed “Samsung Galaxy Note Pro” has leaked Clien.net. This tablet reportedly sports a 12.2-inch display, which is the size of an unknown 12.2-inch Samsung tablet that made the rounds at the FCC about a month go.

If those two are the same devices, we’re told to expect the following list of specs:

  • 12.2-inch 2560 x 1600
  • QualcommSnapdragon 800 processor
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 32GB of internal storage
  • 8 megapixel rear camera
  • 2 megapixel front camera
  • 9,500mAh
  • Android 4.4

That’s about all we know for now, but it’s not hard to figure out that this will be one capable beast of a slate. We imagine it’ll cost a pretty penny to own once it’s available, but we’re getting a bit ahead of ourselves — we’ll need to see this thing unveiled first before we start thinking about any price or release date (though rumors suggest CES will be the platform for its grand arrival).

CyangenMod hits 10 million active users

CyanogenMod thumb

To say that the CyanogenMod team has gained a ton of steam lately would be a huge understatement. It’s been a big year for the custom ROM developers, who got officially incorporated, raised tens of millions of dollars in funding, and are looking to strike up big hardware deals in the very near future. Now, another great milestone has been revealed.

Steve Kondik announced on Google+ that CyanogenMod has hit the 10 million user mark. And just in case you were unsure of the language, Kondik clarified to everyone that this is not total downloads, but actual active users reported based on the stats sent through the CyanogenMod statistics reporter. CyanogenMod statistics counts any device that has “checked in” within the last 90 days, so while these might not be true “up-to-the-minute” numbers, it’s still a good mark to measure.

Numbers like these are the reason why the company was able to incorporate and attract millions of dollars from investors, money that they hope will be used to bring the world’s first actual CyanogenMod phone (perhaps through Pete Lau’s OnePlus) and roll in millions more users in the years to come. You can find the full statistics over at CyanogenMod’s website.
