Say ‘ok google play some music’ to launch an I’m Feeling Lucky radio station Posted: 21 Mar 2014 06:57 PM PDT Google is constantly adding more voice actions to Google Voice Search and increasing Google Now’s functionality by expanding their Knowledge Graph on the back-end. The latest edition will please music lovers out there, specifically those of you that use Google Play Music. Simply launch Google Search by saying ”OK Google" in your Google Search app, tapping the mic icon from your home screen, or if you own a certain Motorola phone, say “Okay Google Now”. Then, tell Google that you want to “play some music”. Google Play Music will then launch and start an "I'm feeling lucky" radio station based on your listening habits. The larger your library, the better experience you’ll have with an “I’m feeling lucky” radio station. If your Google Play Music library isn’t that extensive, you can sign up for All Access for $9.99 a month or enjoy a free trial if you’re a Chromebook owner.
HTC One 2014 headed to Verizon and AT&T, contest and marketing materials hint at same-day release Posted: 21 Mar 2014 04:54 PM PDT The race is on to see which smartphone manufacturer will be the first to release this year’s flagship. We already told you guys about the Samsung Galaxy S5 pre-orders opening up for AT&T, with T-Mobile’s opening on Monday. Although the all new HTC One 2014 isn’t officially scheduled to be unveiled until Tuesday, March 25th, it looks like we might see the device launch much sooner than we originally thought. We were left scratching our heads as to why HTC would wait so long into the month of March to announce their HTC One followup. With all the leaks from signage to brochures, we were wondering what exactly could be the hold up. Well, it appears that, similar to its launch in London, HTC could be planning on making the device available the same day as its March 25th unveiling. Why do we think that? AT&T has just begun officially teasing the launch of “an amazing new HTC device,” with a nondescript image of the HTC One 2014 we’ve seen leaked countless times (minus the front facing camera, light sensor). According to the promo, AT&T will be giving away 1 of these new HTC devices (valued at $639.99), every day until March 25th — starting today. All you have to do is enter in your email, and you’ll be entered to win. There’s also the option of posting AT&T’s “secret” on Twitter or Facebook for additional entries. That contest end-time has us wondering if that will be the day the HTC One 2014 will be officially available in stores. Earlier this week we saw some marketing materials already make their way to Verizon retail stores, cluing us in on its imminent release. Today, we’re getting a look at some additional signage, this time in a leaked promo box showing a date peeking through the HTC One’s upcoming Lite Brite flip cover. It reads, “Get ready to hit refresh, 3.25 at 1PM ET.” According the leaker, a demo unit is also said to be arriving. Pricing and color options for the Verizon Wireless HTC One 2014 were also confirmed from the in-store computer system. Expect the phone to run $200 with a 2-year agreement ($600 full retail) and be available in Amber Gold, Glacier Silver, and Metal Grey (black). Once again, no release date was given, leaving us to wonder if the promo box could, in fact, be hinting at a same-day release.

Top 10 Google Glass myths debunked Posted: 21 Mar 2014 03:19 PM PDT There’s no question that, in the quest to augment our lives with always-on wearable tech like Google Glass, the internet search giant definitely has their work cut out for them. Aside from technical hurdles Google still needs to address before Google Glass is ever “consumer ready” (battery life being a major one), there’s now a social stigma finding itself attached to wearable, one that may have the Project Glass team scrambling to perform some damage control. It was a few weeks back when the Project Glass team put together a nice list of Glass etiquette tips users should be mindful of when using this device out in the real world. Whether online or by word of mouth, we’ve all seen/heard the headlines of Glass wearers getting kicked out of bars and/or restaurants, receiving tickets for driving with Glass, running into Homeland Security, or the rare user generally acting like an ass because they absolutely refuse, under any circumstances, to remove their Glass for anyone — no matter the situation. It’s because of this, the term “Glasshole” is now being associated with many Glass adopters. A far cry from “techie,” “geek,” or “nerd,” names many expected would follow Glass Explorers before the headset actually became available last year. Glass users are now synonymous with dudes who wear Ed Hardy shirts, a modern day Silicon Valley douche-bag. Word has no doubt gotten back to the Glass team, who’s poured their blood, sweat, and tears into making Glass not only functional, but socially acceptable piece of technology. Google’s already done a great job at getting the word out on Glass, no one can argue that. But because very few people actually own the headset, there simply aren’t too many people who can say they have firsthand knowledge of the device. It’s because of this, people have formed all sorts of weird opinions about Glass. If Google hopes for their product — which we can all agree is pretty damn cool — to gain mainstream appeal, they’re going to need to address some common misconceptions first. Set to “clear the air” on a few common myths associated with Glass, the Project Glass team is back with another handy list. As Glass Explorers ourselves, you’d be surprised how many of these we’ve heard from people during our casual run ins, which is why we’re also bringing to you our own experiences while wearing Glass. Let’s take a look. Myth 1: Glass is the ultimate distraction from the real world
You can check out a real, live Galaxy S5 at Best Buy now Posted: 21 Mar 2014 10:41 AM PDT The Galaxy S5's official release is still a few weeks away — it won't launch until April 11th — but Samsung and Best Buy are tempting customers early with preview devices arriving at select retail locations today. The phone will be in display in about 100 stores across the nation where eager potential buyers can get their finger grease all over its 5.1-inch, 1080p Super AMOLED display. The preview of functional demo handsets in advance of a phone's retail launch is a first for Best Buy, who already partners with the Korean smartphone maker to host Samsung-staffed kiosks in many locations. Samsung's new line of smart watches are also on display early, showcasing the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, and Gear Fit. Preorders of the Galaxy S5 kicked off earlier today through AT&T. T-Mobile will follow next week with other US carriers likely to fall in line before the handset's worldwide April launch. The exact stores that will have the demo units have not been announced, so buyers still may need to do a bit of sleuthing to track one down. For those on the fence about the decision to go with the GS5 as their next handset, a little hands-on time could make all the difference. [via Mashable]

Posted: 21 Mar 2014 06:52 AM PDT The internet is in an uproar after Turkey has blocked its citizens from accessing Twitter in the lead up to elections. The decision was handed down by the country's courts after Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan threatened during a campaign speech to "wipe out" the social network. Without wading too deeply into the geopolitical mire, the Turkish governments attack on Twitter stems from an ongoing political scandal involving Erdogan. Twitter has become a primary platform for the opposition to voice concerns of corruption at the highest levels of authority, including the publication of corroborating documents, in the days before Turkey's next election. The Twitter ban has seen #TwitterisblockedinTurkey move up the worldwide trending charts, while Twitter itself has encouraged Turkish users to continue tweeting via SMS, a method the government apparently cannot regulate. While authorities say they have no plans to go after other platforms like Facebook and Google+, the Turkish government led by Erdogan has a long history of beefing with social media. Erdogan threatened only weeks ago to ban Facebook and YouTube. It is unknown if Turkey plans to ease its ban following elections or if the decision is more or less indefinite. The move to block the popular social platform certainly won't do wonders for the world's view on Erdogan and his cabinet. [via Reuters]
AT&T begins Samsung Galaxy S5 preorders (Gear smart watches, as well) Posted: 21 Mar 2014 06:28 AM PDT AT&T has opened preorders for the Samsung Galaxy S5, offering the device for as low as $0 down when purchased as part of a Next installment plan. The carrier will begin shipping the new Android flagship on April 8th. The GS5 is also available at a traditional two-year contract pricing, retailing for $199 when signing a new agreement. Going this route offers additional benefits, including the waving of the phone's $36 activation fee. Customers taking advantage of the pre-order are also eligible for a $100 statement credit, part of a deal that AT&T is offering through the end of the month. Also up for preorder today are Samsung's new Gear smart watches, including the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, and Gear Fit. The Gear 2 retails for $299, while the Neo and Fit both retail for $199. All three devices also ship April 8th. Customers purchasing both a Gear 2 or Gear 2 Neo and a Galaxy S5 by June 5th are eligible for a $50 rebate. The Samsung Galaxy S5 and new line of Gear smart watches were unveiled last month at Mobile World Congress. The devices are expected to arrive for all carriers in April. Other carriers offering preorder opportunities include T-Mobile, who will kick off their pre-sale on March 24th. [via AT&T] |
