Google surpasses Apple as world’s most valuable brand, we feign surprise Posted: 20 May 2014 06:26 PM PDT After 3 years dominating the #1 spot in BrandZ’s “Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands” rankings, the king has just been dethroned. According to their 2014 rankings — published today — Google is now the top dog after growing a whopping 40% from last year and carrying a brand value of $159 billion. Apple? Well, they’re still doing quite well for themselves occupying the #2 spot and declining 20% to $148 billion. According to Millward Brown Optimor VP Oscar Yuan, it’s Apple’s lack of innovation and ground breaking new products that has lead to their decline, creating products that are merely evolutionary and no longer revolutionary. As Apple stagnates, Google on the other hand — with their Google X Labs ventures — is constantly moving forward. Look no further than ground breaking new products like Google Glass, Project Ara, self driving cars, and their WiFi balloons — is there any question how, or why Google took over Apple’s spot? It’s all these things combined that helped Google climb the ranks of BrandZ’s latest report. We’re sure this merely a shadow of things to come. Apple better stop counting their billions, get out of the courtroom and back to creating the products that put them on the map. Question is without Steve, can they do it? You can check out BrandZ’s infograph here. Thanks, JmaxKu! |
AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5 Active leaked in the wild [VIDEO] Posted: 20 May 2014 04:40 PM PDT Last year, Samsung released a water resistant version of their flagship dubbed the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active. The phone featured rugged, industrial stylings along with hardware buttons and screws. It was very unlike the sleek Galaxy S4, but it served a purpose. This year, with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung decided to bring that water resistance to their default flagship line, leaving us to assume we wouldn’t see an Active variant. How wrong we were. Alleged Samsung Galaxy S5 Active side-by-side with the regular Galaxy S5 Leaked onto the YouTubes moments ago is the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active (SM-G870A) for AT&T. A fella going by the name of TK Tech News managed to get his hands on the device, which features a thick, rugged outer shell but similar Galaxy S5 internals. We’re still trying to wrap our heads around why a device like this needs to even exist, but in the meantime, check out the quick hands on video down below. [via TK Tech News] |
LG G3 (D850) makes a pit stop at the FCC as it prepares for US release Posted: 20 May 2014 03:28 PM PDT It’s coming. LG’s worst kept secret since the Nexus 5, we’ve seen enough of the LG G3 it’s almost crazy to think this phone still hasn’t been made official. While we wait around for LG’s unveiling event (and more leaks), the LG G3 just made its mandatory pit stop at the FCC. The documentation doesn’t reveal much, just a few wireless bands, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS… Oh yeah, and it’s got a camera. No surprises there. It looks as if the US model will go by the D850 (AT&T model?), while the UK variant is the D855. If nothing else, the certification lets us know the launch date for LG’s latest flagship — which is still a mystery at this point — is fast approaching. The LG G3 is currently scheduled for a May 27th unveiling in London and we can’t wait to see what’s new. Current rumors and leaks point to an entirely new user interface, laser sensor for auto focusing, and circular Quick Window widgets. [FCC] |
Camera battle: Watch as the OnePlus One mops the floor with the iPhone 5s [VIDEO] Posted: 20 May 2014 01:55 PM PDT Once little more than an afterthought, today many prospective buyers look to camera quality as a main selling point when choosing a new smartphone. Just check out any recent smartphone review and scroll down to the comment section to find dozens of people critiquing a smartphone’s camera quality, whether or not they’re a camera buff. Chances are you’ve heard the hype surrounding the OnePlus One (that is how they made a name for themselves after all). But processors, RAM, and battery life aside, we’re sure many of you are still wondering how the phone stacks up in the camera department. Thankfully, a YouTuber by the name of OT4Tech decided to pit the OnePlus One against one of the best smartphone cameras in the biz: the Apple iPhone 5s. Needless to say, we were surprised by the outcome. The best part about the video, aside from being encoded in 4K, is that it randomizes the side-by-side comparisons, only showing you the name of phone after you’ve made your judgement. This should help keep everyone’s judgements honest and free from their personal bias. Take a look for yourself in the comparison video below. Our victor? Hands-down, without a shade of a doubt the OnePlus One won in nearly every comparison. Colors were more vibrant, contrast wasn’t washed out like on the 5s (even when it wasn’t in HDR mode), and we’d have to say it just handled images all around better. Of course, the obvious exception being the slow-mo video and front facing camera test. The OnePlus One’s audio was atrocious and appeared to only record in mono, with no audio what-so-ever in slow mo. Guess that’s something for the OnePlus guys to work on in a future. Before we leave you, make sure to let us know which smartphone camera you think reigned supreme, and if this changes your opinion at all about the OnePlus One. Cheers. [YouTube]

Here is a full 360-degree view of the new HTC One M8 Prime Posted: 20 May 2014 12:32 PM PDT After giving us a sneak peek at the alleged “ HTC One M8 Prime” earlier today, @evleaks is now going all out, opening up that cropped image to a full sized, 360-degree view of the HTC One M8 Prime. Let’s take a minute to marvel at the thing… Okay, after giving it the once over, the first thing you’ll notice is the sheer of the thing, lining up nicely with rumors that it will carry a 5.5-inch 2K display. Of course, the protruding camera with the orange rings is likely to be the first thing to grab your eye, but look carefully at the front and you’ll notice the inclusion of 2 black bezels — one along the bottom for the logo, and another on top which appears to house the ambient light sensor. We’d be lying if we said it didn’t look gorgeous, HTC has a fabulous track record of building beautiful and modern looking handsets. In many ways, we find the stylings reminiscent of the HTC EVO 4G LTE but don’t get it confused. This is most certainly a phablet looking to go head to head with this year’s Samsung Galaxy Note 4. 5 cool things you should be doing with Pushbullet Posted: 20 May 2014 12:11 PM PDT Back in the day there was a popular app called Chrome to Phone. This Google-made app allowed Chrome users to send links to their Android device with the click of a button. It was great at doing that one task, but it couldn’t do much more. Google eventually abandoned the app for Chrome tab syncing, which opened the door for an app called Pushbullet. Pushbullet is Chrome to Phone on steroids. It can be installed on Android, iOS, Chrome, and Firefox. Every device you install it on becomes a destination that you can “push” things to. You can send links, photos, videos, files, and much more, but that is just one small part of the app. Pushbullet is one of the coolest apps out there right now. If you’re looking for a reason to give it a try we have 5. Notification MirroringNotification mirroring is undoubtedly the coolest thing Pushbullet for Android can do. Every notification you get on your phone/tablet will be displayed in a pop-up on your PC. Some of notifications can even be clicked to open their respective website. You can also dismiss a notification from your Android notification shade right from the pop-up on your PC. To set up notification mirroring follow these steps:
You can turn notification mirroring on or off for specific apps. For example, you might not care to see when an app is auto-updating in the Play Store. If you’re worried about the notification mirroring using data you can set it to only mirror while connected to WiFi. Never miss a notification again. Send anything to any deviceLike we mentioned above, at its core Pushbullet is basically a souped-up Chrome to Phone. So you might expect it to be able to send stuff to other devices. Chrome to Phone was good at sending links from Chrome to Android, but Pushbullet can do much more than that. You can share URLs, photos, notes, APKs, videos, and many other file types. Pushbullet also gives you the ability to send stuff from your phone to your PC with Android’s built-in sharing feature. When you send links from certain websites, such as Google Maps or YouTube, to Android they will open in their respective apps. The nice thing about Pushbullet is it won’t automatically open the apps like Chrome to Phone did. The notification will be waiting for you to take action on it. There are tons of situations where this can come in handy. Use it with IFTTTPushbullet recently released a channel for IFTTT. This was already an incredibly awesome feature, but with the release of IFTTT for Android it’s even better. With Pushbullet + IFTTT you can turn anything in your life into a notification. Package status changes? Get a notification. Weather about to get nasty? Get a notification. Favorite team just scored a run? Get a notification. If you’re looking for an IFTTT recipe to get you started check out the one we have for “Android Wallpaper” posts. Every time we post new wallpaper you will be sent a link so you can download the wallpapers. There are hundreds of other Pushbullet recipes available on IFTTT, plus you can whip up your own. The only limit is your imagination. Head on over to IFTTT to get started. Use it with TaskerIf you use Tasker more than IFTTT there is a bunch of cool stuff you can do as well. With Tasker you can trigger Pushbullet notifications based on any profile you have set up on your Android device. You could send missed calls/texts from your Android phone to your tablet, push a notification to all devices when you arrive/enter a location, and much more. Just think of it as everything awesome about Tasker, plus the ability to talk to all of your devices. To learn more about the Pushbullet plug-in for Tasker head here. Create a quick to-do listNeed to create a quick to-do list? Pushbullet can do that too. Open up the Pushbullet app or extension and select the List option in the “Push What?” menu. You can give the list a title and then add things to do. The list can be sent to any of the devices you have connected. The list will stay in your notification shade until everything is completed. This can be handy if you want to remember to do things when you are using a specific device, or if you want the to-do list to be available on all of your devices. *** You may be thinking to yourself “there are already apps out there that can do most of this stuff.” That’s true, but the beauty of Pushbullet is you only one app. You don’t have to load up your phone with a special app for every type of notification you want. This one powerful app can do it all. You can download Pushbullet for free right here. Are you a Pushbullet user? What are some things that you do with it? |
Is this our first look at the HTC One M8 Prime? [UPDATE] Posted: 20 May 2014 11:37 AM PDT Revered Twitter leakster @evleaks promised that we were only just getting started with all the HTC One M8 Prime leaks, and he has come through with another — a very clean look at the upper-back portion of the device’s press render. It certainly does look HTC One-ish with that extra depth information camera and that iconic white stripe racing through it. While this photo obviously doesn’t tell us much we can take a couple of things away from it. For starters, it seems HTC has elected to go with a raised camera sensor for the primary camera as opposed to the flush installation on the original HTC One M8. And while it’s hard to tell from a cropped press render, the material doesn’t look quite as shiny as the original M8 did in its press photos. This could lend credence to the rumor from yesterday suggesting HTC has gone with a new material made of a composite of aluminum and liquid silicone. This would stand to give the device that same premium feel while giving it more grip for those who complained about how slippery the original M8 is. And that’s all that’s new today. So far, we know that this thing could come in at 5.5 inches, have 2560 x 1440 resolution, a Snapdragon 805 chipset, 3GB of RAM and will be waterproof. Sounding like quite the impressive phone for sure, but we’ll have to wait for official word to see if this is more than just wishful thinking. @evleaks decided to add another image after the buzzer, including a full, 360-degree GIF of the alleged One M8 Prime. Bask in its splendor. |
Verizon is rolling out HD voice calls via VoLTE later this year Posted: 20 May 2014 11:10 AM PDT There’s no question Verizon Wireless is one of the more expensive options when it comes to choosing wireless services. But ask any happy customer and they’ll tell you that, in most cases, you get what you pay for. Yesterday we told you guys about Verizon’s plans to double up their 4G bandwidth by rolling out XLTE across their network. Today, Verizon is back for round 2 announcing their plans to bring voice-over-LTE to their customers as early as this year. Rolling out over the next few months, VoLTE will operate on the AMR-wideband standard (adaptive multi-rate wideband) to deliver an HD voice experience to Verizon subscribers (and on par with HD voice services from Sprint and T-Mobile who also use the same codec). Of course as we saw with XLTE, you’ll need a compatible VoLTE device — making and receiving the call — to take advantage of crystal clear voice calling. Verizon says they’ll have a “robust” lineup of VoLTE devices when the service goes live, with many other existing devices receiving a simple software update to enable VoLTE. But it’s not just for voice calls. Verizon is saying that customers will have the ability to switch from VoLTE calls to video calls on the fly, leaving us to wonder if they wont have a separate VoLTE dialer app or something along those lines. VoLTE is just the first step of Rich Communication Services Verizon has planned for their customers. Expect large file transfers, “robust” group messaging, and enhanced location sharing in the future. |
Best apps and games for the Samsung Galaxy S5 Posted: 20 May 2014 10:40 AM PDT While the Samsung Galaxy S5 has some amazing capabilities, it — like every smartphone — is only about as good as the apps you pair with it. If you are a new owner, particularly one that is also new to Android, here are some of our favorite apps and games that take advantage of all the power the Galaxy S5 has to offer. Best Apps for the Samsung Galaxy S5Milk MusicYou have plenty of choices when it comes to listening to music on your GS5. You can load your own tracks via the handset's MicroSD storage, download new tunes from Google Play, or choose from a number of streaming music apps like Spotify and Pandora. But you have the Galaxy S5, so you should take advantage of certain privileges. One of those includes the exclusive ability to access Samsung's Milk Music. Milk Music at its core is a fairly typical streaming service, but it benefits from an innovative interface that lets you choose the perfect soundtrack for the mood you're in as well as a music curation engine powered by Slacker Radio. We feel Slacker is one of the more under-appreciated music platforms out there, and Milk Music perfectly highlights this. ChatONWhile we're on the topic Samsung-centric apps, Galaxy S5 owners should also consider checking out ChatON. ChatON is Samsung's answer to free messaging services like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, iMessage and others. Unlike Milk Music, however, ChatON is not exclusive to Samsung users. The app is available for all Android devices, iOS, and PC, and features translation capabilities, Anicon stickers, and LIVEpartner, a service for querying info from sources like the AP, History Channel, and more. SwiftKey
The Galaxy S5 ships with a perfectly capable keyboard preinstalled, but that doesn't mean it can't get better. SwiftKey's intuitive, predictive text engine makes it one of the best replacements around if speed and accuracy is what you are looking for. It's as simple as it needs to be while offering just as much as the stock Galaxy S5 software keyboard. Flow mode adds swipe input for even quicker texting. Another alternative worth checking out is the Google Keyboard, which incorporates a similar set of features in a package tailored for pure Android. VSCOCamWant that to take that 13MP camera to the next level? Shelve the stock camera app and download VSCOCam. On the surface the app might seem like another set of photo filters primed for social sharing, but VSCOCam's editing capabilities go much deeper. There is a short learning curve while you get a handle on the various tools available to you, but once you become familiar with what VSCOCam can do the sky is the limit in terms of what the Galaxy S5's 13MP camera can do. PayPalWhat's PayPal, a useful but not particularly flashy app, doing on this list? Consider the Galaxy S5 fingerprint scanner and the fact that you can use it to authorize payments via the popular online money managing service. As PayPal becomes more ubiquitous, with almost all online retailers accepting it and many brick-and-mortar stores following suit, having a quick and secure way to make payments with a mobile phone is a major plus. The added layer of security provided by the GS5's fingerprint scanner only makes using the app that much better. And the rest…These, of course, are just a small sampling of worthy Android apps for the Galaxy S5. The truth is, as one of the best Android phones on the market the GS5 pairs well with hundreds of top-notch applications and services for everything from music and media to social networking and messaging. We recommend you check out our other best app lists for more great software.
Best Games for the Samsung Galaxy S5XCOM: Enemy UnknownThe award-winning game made its way to Android just as the Galaxy S5 launched, and there perhaps could be no better pairing. XCOM features console-quality graphics and immersive gameplay with a focus on tactical combat. If you want to put the GS5's hardware through the paces, XCOM affords you that opportunity. The Walking Dead: Season OneWith a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display the Galaxy S5 is great for taking in a movie or TV show. Combine that visual storytelling with interactive puzzles and under-pressure decision making and you have TellTale's The Walking Dead. This episodic adventure came to Android earlier this year and covers a side story to the main Walking Dead tale unfolding in the popular series of comics and accompanying television show. But catch up quick. Season Two is already available on other platforms and should find its way to Android soon. Smash HitSome games have great graphics, but few offer eye candy in the same manner as Smash Hit. Simplistic gameplay (adequately described in the title) is accentuated with colorful, glossy visuals and a swirling soundtrack. It's a unique take on the shooter-on-rails genre in which players bombard geometric objects with metallic pinballs in an effort to smash everything in sight. Asphalt 8: AirborneRacing games have become synonymous with showcasing the graphical prowess of gaming consoles, and it's no different for smartphones. The latest entry in the Asphalt series looks stunning on the Samsung Galaxy S5 and zips along just as fast as the tricked-out cars featured in the game. Temple Run 2This one's just plain addictive. Temple Run 2 is the second entry in this endless runner series and features the same basic gameplay. Guide your adventurer through ancient ruins, avoiding traps and pitfalls along the way as you scoop up treasures galore. Thankfully the GS5 provides plenty of battery life because you are going to need it with the amount of time you sink into this title. But there's more…As with apps, this is only a small selection of what new Galaxy S5 owners have to choose from when it comes to games. Check out some of our other lists detailing the best recent Android releases as well as the addictive games we can't stop playing. Be sure to check out our list of 14 things every new Galaxy S5 owner should do plus our complete list of Galaxy S5 tips and tricks for even more ways to get the most out of your phone!

Google+ update brings massive UI overhaul and tons of new features [APK Download] Posted: 20 May 2014 09:55 AM PDT Google has just announced a huge new upgrade for the Google+ for Android app. The biggest change you’ll see right out of the dugout is a brand new user interface. The app features a lot more red on profile pages, and tightens things up around nearly every other corner. Said UI tweaks include an updated interface for posting new status messages, a new photo browser that lets you quickly view your entire catalog (said to be a big change for those with big photo libraries) and navigate the photos by date, and new navigation and app menus to make it easy to zip around the various sections of the app. On the more functional side of things, Auto Awesome Stories and Auto Awesome Movies arrive, with the former taking all your photos, video and public check-ins into a travelogue of sorts, while the latter allows you to automatically string together photos and videos to make quick and fun highlights. Finally, you can now create animated GIFs and photobooth-style images right from the Android app using the new “Motion” and “Mix” options in the Photos section of the app. As with most Google app updates, this one is rolling out to user at a gradual pace. That said, we’ve already gotten our paws on the APK for you to check out, so be sure to give that a download using the link below (if you can’t find it in Google Play) and take the new app for a spin. |
Will Samsung’s first smart glasses be named “Gear Blink?” Posted: 20 May 2014 08:42 AM PDT Anyone with half a beat on the tech world knows Samsung is likely cooking up some smart glasses of their own. Much isn’t known about the company’s pair at this time, but we imagine it’ll provide all sorts of interesting features that not even Google has thought of with Google Glass. One of those features sprung up in a recent patent by the South Korean company that described a method of projecting a keyboard onto a user’s fingers for some innovative typing action. We could sit and speculate all day about what it’ll do, but one thing we might not have to speculate about is what it’ll be named. A recent Korean trademark filing by Samsung suggests they’ll look to add their smart glasses to their “Gear” line of wearables as the “Samsung Gear Blink.” Interesting. Short. Catchy. Marketable. It certainly does have all the makings of a nice product name, though this is by no means a guarantee that Samsung will look to launch it with that name. In fact, there’s no guarantee we’ll ever see them launch the smart glasses — nothing is official until it’s official, I always say. The lack of the word “Galaxy” in all this could indicate Samsung’s going with Tizen for the device’s operating system, a move they made with their latest Gear smartwatches. Android or not, it’ll likely pair up with Samsung’s vast line of smartphones and tablets to add even more value to an already robust (or bloated, depending on how you look at it) experience. Rumor: Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to have 5.7-inch 2560 x 1440 display Posted: 20 May 2014 06:55 AM PDT The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is no longer the new kid on the block, so it’s not surprising to start hearing rumors of its successors. We all believe it’s coming, but we have no idea what Samsung will look to bring. GSMArena claims to have accurate info on the display. According to a leak of theirs, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 could be coming with a 5.7-inch 2560 x 1440 display. If you haven’t been paying attention this is the same resolution that the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime is rumored to be shipped with. It’s not surprising that Samsung would look to introduce the high-res display on a line of smartphones they typically push the bar with. Perhaps more interesting is that Samsung decided not to increase screen size this time. The Samsung Galaxy Note has grown by .2 inches with each release, so perhaps it says something about Samsung believing that bigger is not always better. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 was a sensible upgrade, because while the display size increased — from 5.5 inches on the Note 2 to 5.7 inches on the Note 3 — the overall size of the phone was about the same. 5.7 inches could be seen as their new sweet spot going forward. Unfortunately there’s nothing else to take away from this one, but we’re sure more details will come running along in due time. For now, we’re just waiting for Samsung to announce the upgraded version of the Samsung Galaxy S5. |
Warning: next Android update might break quite a few root apps Posted: 20 May 2014 05:45 AM PDT In way more words and technical explanations than I’m comfortable repeating here, Chainfire — the developer who creates one of the best SuperUser (root access) apps out there, as well as gems like 500 Firepaper — has given developers of root apps an ominous warning. According to him, the forthcoming upgrade to Android (whether that be 4.4.3 or some other number Google plans to use) changes things in a way that breaks functionality for a good deal of root apps. Most of the changes have to do with SELinux and the ART runtime possibly being enabled by default, as well as other developer-centric changes. Long story short, Chainfire has come to the conclusion that the changes won’t necessarily break all root apps, but he’s seen enough to believe that the changes will undoubtedly affect enough of them that this big warning is needed. He’s already gotten to work on his own SuperSU, and invites developers and advanced users to download the latest version (not yet being distributed via Google Play) and help knock out some of the kinks. He’s also urging developers to re-read the SELinux section of his How-to SU guide, as he’s made some important changes that detail some of the forthcoming changes in the next version of Android. Chainfire takes special care to remind developers to test their apps against ART, as its possible future status as the default runtime for Android could make it more important than ever to pay attention to. If you’re a developer then be sure to head to the source link for all the detailed explanations and relevant links you can handle. [via Google+] |
LG LifeBand Touch and HeartRate Earphones now available from Best Buy Posted: 20 May 2014 05:14 AM PDT LG told us their newest fitness-centric products were headed to the United States this week, and they can say they lived up to that promise. Best Buy is now selling the South Korean company’s LifeBand Touch and HeartRate Earphones. The former is a smartwatch that utilizes a familiar cast of sensors (altimeter, gyroscope and the like) to record workout information and sync it to apps like RunKeeper and LG’s Fitness app. It’ll also let you check notifications for incoming calls and text messages, as well as control music playback right from your wrist. Adding to that are the Bluetooth-equipped HeartRate earphones, which uses the blood flow of the ear (said to be more reliable and accurate than the finger) to detect your heart rate. The earphone monitors can automatically sync that information to your phone or LifeBand Touch, and will also ping you with your heart rate every now and then while you’re listening to your music. Pricing? It’s a cool $150 for the LifeBand Touch, and oddly enough the earphones will run you $180. Kind of steep for some earphones, though we suppose there aren’t many on the market doing what these do just yet. Check them out at the links ahead. [Best Buy 1|2] |
Gmail for Android update finally brings ability to save attachments to Google Drive Posted: 20 May 2014 04:59 AM PDT The ability to save Gmail attachments to Google Drive straight from the email has been a very pleasant experience on desktop, but those of us who do check a lot of email on mobile have been missing out on that functionality. Thankfully there’s no more waiting for it, as the latest Gmail for Android update adds a quick and easy “Save to Drive” button for any attachments you receive. Also new in this update is an explanation for any email that is automatically marked as spam, better support for right-to-left languages (such as Arabic), and easier access to the slide-out navigation bar while reading email messages. Of course, Google always stresses that not everyone will see the update at the same time, but it shouldn’t take more than a few days to reach your handset or tablet if it isn’t already available. |
