Oppo Find 7 could debut with Snapdragon 805 CPU

Posted: 06 Dec 2013 11:32 AM PST

Oppo-Find-5-660x479

Roughly a year since the debut of their flagship Find 5, rumors are starting to piece together what we can expect to see out of the phone's followup. According to recent whispers, the Oppo Find 7 could launch with a Snapdragon 805 CPU, Qualcomm's latest and greatest system-on-a-chip for mobile devices.

Other rumored specs include a whopping 3GB of RAM, a 13MP camera, and — a first from Oppo — 4G LTE support. As to that LTE support, Oppo recently posted an image to their Weibo page with text that translates to "4G LTE, I'm ready!" The message could simply be a response to a recent push to aggressively roll out LTE to Chinese mobile users, but it might double as a tease for the Find 7.

If the Find 7 lives up to its rumored spec sheet, we again could be dealing with a mammoth phone from the feisty mobile manufacturer looking to make a name for itself among the myriad of Android options out there. Unfortunately, that's exactly the reason why many users outside of China will never have a chance to check out the hardware should it come to fruition.

Droid DNA to receive two-part update to Android 4.2.2, will gain Sense 5 features

Posted: 06 Dec 2013 10:16 AM PST

HTC Droid DNA

Verizon has announced the details of an upcoming Android 4.2.2 update for the Droid DNA by HTC. The update will arrive as two parts, and, when completed, will implement HTC Sense 5 and a host of features that have so far been exclusive to the company's One lineup.

Droid DNA owners will have new features like BlinkFeed and quick settings to toy around with in the new version of Sense. The latest version of HTC's customized Android interface is less obtrusive  than what currently features on the Verizon handset. Users can expect this to carryover into updated Sense apps including the calendar, dialer, gallery, and contacts list. A number of bug fixes and tweaks are also packaged with the update.

Users will first be prompted to download software version 2.08.605.1 before completing a second phase to bring the DNA's software to version 3.06.605.4. The update(s) should begin rolling out to handsets shortly.

If you own an Android phone, it's highly unlikely that Bing is your search engine of choice. So how will Microsoft lure users into downloading their app? With the ability to automatically change your wallpaper to Bing's image of the day. The functionality introduced in version 4.2.0 of the app mirrors the capabilities of Bing's Windows Phone equivalent.

Along with daily wallpapers, the app does see a bit of a redesign in case you were considering entering a search term or two. Hey, not everyone is trying to get scroogled.

LG proves the QWERTY isn’t dead as F3Q leaks for T-Mobile

The physical QWERTY keyboard will live to see another day thanks to LG. Their upcoming F3Q handset for T-Mobile has leaked, revealing what looks to be a midrange handset along the lines of the LG Optimus F3. That device landed with the carrier earlier this year.

The Optimus F3 features a 4-inch display at 800×480 resolution, dual-core processor, and 5MP camera. The F3Q looks to be more of the same, save for the addition of a five-row QWERTY keyboard.

Popular flashlight app ‘deceived’ users into sharing location data

Posted: 06 Dec 2013 07:27 AM PST

Night-Scavenger-Hunt-Flashlight-Search-Outside

The maker of Brightest Flashlight has agreed to settle with the Federal Trade Commission on charges that the app "deceived consumers" into sharing location data with advertisers. While the app does allow users the ability to disable the reporting of location data to third-parties, sharing is on by default, rendering the option "meaningless," according to the FTC. The complaint claims that the app's privacy policy does not accurately disclose information on what type of data is being collected and how it will be used.

Goldenshores Technologies, the developer behind Brightest Flashlight, ultimately gets what amounts to a slap on the wrist, agreeing to alter their app's privacy policy and implement a true option to disable location sharing from within the app. Users will be asked to opt-in to location data collection rather than having the function on by default.  Goldenshores Technologies must also delete any stored location data already collected by the app.

Brightest Flashlight has been downloaded over 50 million times by Android users.

ASUS to unveil Padfone Mini at December 11th event in Taiwan

Posted: 06 Dec 2013 06:18 AM PST

asus-padfone-infinity-10

Invites are going out for a December 11th event at which ASUS will unveil the Padfone Mini. The event will take place in Taiwan.

The Padfone Mini is expected to be a smaller, (possibly) cheaper version of ASUS' 2-in-1 device. The most recent model in the lineup, the PadFone Infinity, combined a 5-inch smartphone with a 10-inch tablet. The Padfone Mini is expected to rely on a similar setup, swapping in a 4.3-inch smartphone and 7-inch tablet. As with older Padfone models, the smartphone portion will function as the "brains" of the setup and utilize a quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor.

A major hurdle with the original Padfone sales model was pricing, expecting consumers to spend big on both the smartphone and tablet halves. The Padfone Mini could address this issue to an extent, offering a cheaper model that could have more mass appeal.

HTC announces financing program for HTC One

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 06:23 PM PST

htc one financing

Purchasing an off-contract is becoming much more popular. Especially with devices like the Nexus 5 and Moto G offering good specs for low prices. A new trend seems to be on the rise, though. Motorola has recently started financing off-contract phones and now HTC is jumping in the bandwagon.

The Taiwanese manufacturer is offering a financing program for the $600, 32 GB HTC One. Assuming your credit passes the test, you will be able to what could be the best phone of the year home. All for $0 down and as low as $25 monthly payments (no interests).

We assume these terms may change if your credit is not as great as they would like it to be. This is probably why they say “as low”. Fortiva Loans is in charge of the borrowing department. Regardless, it’s nice to see more manufacturers doing this.

You can get the HTC One for less from other retailers, at this point, but having a device in easy payments is always great. You can go apply for HTC One financing at HTC’s website. You should hurry, the current deal is only available until December 29, 2013. You might have to put some money as a down payment after that.

Also, this is the GSM version. So it will be good for GSM carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile. Who is signing up?!

Instagram invites media to “share a moment” on Dec. 12

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 06:00 PM PST

Instagram-Invite-1

Instagram lives online, so it strikes us as odd when we see such a company sending physical press invites to an event. This is exactly what has happened as multiple media outlets start receiving physical, wooden invitations to an event in New York City this coming December 12th.

The invitation is pretty much an Instagram photo printed on a wooden canvas, inviting the media to “share a moment” with the team. Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom will be there to show us all the goodies. There is a huge question to be answered, though: what is this event all about?

There are recent rumors of Instagram working on private messaging, but that is yet to be seen and nothing really points towards that.

Can we take something from the fact press is getting physical invitations in the form of images printed in a wooden canvas? I would it would be very cool if we could purchase some of those with our very own images. After all, it seems all media outlets are getting different images.

Nothing is for sure now, though. We will have to wait until December 12 to find out!

Pantech Vega Secret Up announced – high end specs, fingerprint reader and “privacy protected” display

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 03:05 PM PST

pantech-vega-secret-up

Pantech is ending the year with a high-end phone that will sure turn heads. The device comes with great specs on a 5.6-inch display, essentially making this a “phablet”. The most interesting features go beyond just raw specs, though. This is a bit of a special device, and not only because of its odd name.

Pantech Vega Secret Up specs

  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
  • 5.6-inch 1080p display
  • 2.3 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor
  • 2 GB of RAM
  • 16 GB of internal storage
  • 13 MP camera (with front-facing shooter)
  • 3,150 mAh battery

Not bad at all, right? Large screen, powerful processor, and awesome battery life. What else can we ask for? Let’s jump into what makes this smartphone truly unique.

Fingerprint reader

To start things off, the device comes with a fingerprint reader. We haven’t seen this feature being well-implemented yet. Even the iPhone’s fingerprint reader is faulty, according to our very own Kevin Krause. Does this mean the Secret Up’s will be as bad? We don’t know, but we have a hard time believing they can do a better job than Apple, Motorola and HTC.

htc-max-fingerprint

Privacy protected display?

The next feature is that one that strikes me as odd. Pantech is touting the Secret Up’s “privacy protected” display. The screen is said to only show content to the person using the phone. We are not sure what this means, but it sounds to me like a sorry excuse for covering up lack of good viewing angles.

Nothing is for sure, though. Maybe Pantech really has something up its sleve.

Sound-improving flip case

To finish things up, Pantech will also be selling a flip case that is said to amplify the device’s sound. Vibration is taken into account and it’s supposed to being a concert hall experience to the device. Again… odd, but we won’t judge until we get to test this bad boy.

Pricing and availability

Price is not yet announced, but we can’t expect the Pantech Vega Secret Up to be very affordable. We do know it will be available this month in Korea, though. The phone’s availability in other markets is still anyone’s guess, but we are almost sure this phone will not make it to the US. Most of these devices focus on Asian and European markets.

Would you get a phone with all these odd features, though? I am a bit skeptical about it.

Nexus 5 now getting Android 4.4.1 update – get your cameras ready!

Nexus-5-featured-LARGE

If you didn’t believe the Android 4.4.1 rumors or the test shots, you can throw all your skepticism out the window now. The update is very real and Google has announced it. The best part – Nexus 5 owners will be getting it today!

Google promises the update will be ready sometime today and is highlighting the main improvements it brings. This update is all about the camera, which is actually an awesome fact. Nexus 5 users can attest to how bad the Nexus 5 camera can be.

Android 4.4.1 update camera improvements

Phandroid 4.4 KitKat

  • Faster focusing, especially in low-light.
  • Faster white balancing.
  • Ability to pinch-to-zoom on HDR+ mode.
  • Less shutter lag.

Over all, this will make your pictures much less blurry and better illuminated. Say goodbye to your dark, blurry holiday images, guys! Or… at the very least they will be better now. We know it’s hard, but try not to spend all day tapping that “Check Now” button!

Google Glass competitor Vuzix M100 now available for pre-order at $1,000

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 01:54 PM PST

vuzix-m100

Google Glass competitors are starting to come to light as wearable technology becomes more popular. It seems the first one to beat Google Glass to the (mass) market is the Vuzix M100 smart glass, which has just become available for pre-order. It will be officially released this month, but you will have to pay $1,000 to get your hands on one.

As expected, smart glasses will not be affordable for a while, but the M100 might be a worthy product to consider. This smart glass is essentially an Android smartphone without the cellphone antenna. It runs Android on its own, sporting everything a smartphone features.

CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), quality = 90

The Vuzix M100 comes packed with all the internals, including GPS, a gyroscope, a camera, touch sensors, a processor, RAM memory, bluetooth and all the other goodies. It’s essentially a mini tablet in the shape of a smart glass. In fact, the company’s description is that it looks exactly like a smartphone would if places 10-12 inches in front of your eyes.

We got to test this device at CES 2013 and have to say we are not impressed. Not because of the device, it actually looks like a rather sweet unit, but because Vuzix was not able to keep its promises. First and foremost: the device was supposed to cost $500 upon release. To make matters a bit worse, release date was scheduled for last summer. Not only were they late, but they doubled the retail price!

It could still be a good purchase if you are willing to try these out. It also connects to your smartphone so it won’t be a completely stand-alone product. Though it will probably do more (on its own) than Google Glass does.

Is it better than Google Glass, though? In some ways it is, but Google Glass will probably take off before the Vuzix M100. Glass will more than likely have more support and cost less (upon release). We are still not sure, though, so it’s a gamble.

What do you think? Are you convinced with this $1000 smart glass? Will you wait for Google Glass instead? Maybe you just don’t care much for wearable technology. Either way, let us know what you think in the comments!

Anchorman’s Scotchy Scotch Toss game now available

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 01:20 PM PST

Are you a fan of the legendary Anchorman Ron Burgundy? He is easily one of the funniest comedians on TV and now you can enjoy his crazy style with an Android game. Scotchy Scotch Toss brings Burgundy’s raw fun to your smartphone by mixing his two favorite things: “Scotch, and playful exchanges with total strangers.”

scotchy-scotch-tossThe game is simple and fun. You get to toss ice at a scotch glass while Ron Burgundy makes fun of your lack of skills. He will also give you some (kind of) good comments when you succeed, though. By the way – yes, he does speak to you in the game. The app comes with 300 Ron Burgundy lines, recorded by Will Ferrel himself.

“Hey, did you know that “app” is short for “appetite?” Because you’re always hungry for more….. I’m sorry, I don’t know what “app” means, but what I do know is this is a top shelf quality product.

A true treasure of mobile gaming, “Scotchy Scotch Toss” has the detailed craftsmanship worthy of exhibition in the yet-to-be-built Burgundy Library in Washington D.C.” – Ron Burgundy

Gameplay resembles your usual swipe and toss format. You swipe up and throw the ice at the scotch glass; simple and fun for your downtime. There are 4 different locations and even a 2-player mode.

Google now allows you to download Gmail and Calendar data

google backup

Looking to switch email and calendar providers or just need a backup for safe keeping? Thankfully, Google is now allowing folks to download their Gmail and Google Calendar data. Google will deliver your data in standard file formats, and you can even choose to download data from specific labels. This data can also be downloaded as part of a bigger archive containing all of your data from all of Google’s services.

You won’t be able to download your Gmail data right away as Google will roll it out over the course of this next month, but you can log into your account and get your Calendar right now if you need it. You can find the option under your account settings.

You can finally store your Google Play Music songs on your SD card

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 11:02 AM PST

Google Play Music banner

One of my biggest complaints about Google Play Music was that the app could only store “pinned” music (music downloaded for offline listening) to a device’s internal storage. Only have 4GB of internal storage but have 32GB of sweet microSD card space to fill? Tough luck.

Not any more, though, as the latest Google Play Music upgrade finally brings us the ability to store cached music to the SD card. This should give users as much space as they need to have tons of their tunes available for those times when a strong internet connection isn’t handy. Beyond that, you now have the ability to share various tracks you’ve bought.

While you’ve been able to share certain tracks and libraries to Google+ in the past, this new option now allows you to share music to any app (it’ll come up in the form of a link). The upgrade should be in the Google Play Store soon, but this is a staggered rollout so if you don’t see it right away then you’ll just have to be a patient Patty and wait a bit.

Android 4.4.1 update is real, and will bring some serious camera improvements

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 09:39 AM PST

nexus 5 before and after sample 1

A couple of days ago, we heard murmurings of an “Android 4.4.1″ update. Our own traffic logs showed many instances of hits from such an OS version, but we also saw hits from the likes of Android 9.9.9 — forgive us if we were a bit skeptical. But it looks like 4.4.1 is the real deal, and we should be expecting some much-needed improvements to camera performance following the OTA’s rollout.

According to The Verge, who happened to have some before-and-after camera samples to go along with the story, showing some key improvements. For starters, the shutter time has been greatly reduced, which should make for much sharper photos.

The team has also increased the framerate inside the camera app, which should go toward improving focusing speed. It also doesn’t take as long to launch the camera app itself. Beyond all of that, HDR+ mode has been given a progress indicator for the software-based post-process effect to be applied, giving you an idea of how long it will take before you can share your shots with the world.

The Verge says the upgrade is so close that it should be rolling out in a matter of days, so if a majority of the people over at the Mountain View campus really are testing it then that’s not that hard to believe. Be sure to take a look at more sample images at the source link.

Will Samsung release a phone with a fingerprint scanner next year?

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 08:37 AM PST

fingerprint-scanner

Apple has done it, so you can expect pretty much everyone else to follow sooner or later. The latest report out of Reuters suggests the Korean electronics manufacturer will look to create a smartphone with a fingerprint scanner at some point in 2014. Fingerprint Cards’ CEO Johan Carlstrom let that much slip, noting that his company hoped to be one of the players OEMs looked to for components and development for the fingerprint scanners.

We are obviously taking the report with a grain of salt, but it wouldn’t be difficult to believe such a thing is in the works. HTC didn’t take long to get on the fingerprint bandwagon with the launch of the HTC One Max, and other OEMs have been talking up the use of the technology in upcoming devices for quite some time.

Fingerprint scanners provide another layer of security that many paranoid security buffs will appreciate, but most companies will want to find a way to differentiate their own solutions for purposes of marketing. HTC’s One Max does this with the ability to launch into different apps depending on which finger is scanned. It will take that level of innovation and ingenuity for companies to make consumers believe that their fingerprint scanner is the bee’s knees compared to the competition.

If Samsung does, in fact, introduce a smartphone with a fingerprint scanner next year, it’s not a foregone conclusion that it would be available to us in the Samsung Galaxy S5 or the next Galaxy Note. Samsung typically introduces new features in off-shoot devices, such as the metal chassis of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active, the optical zoom lens inside the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, and the curved body of the Samsung Galaxy Round.

We wouldn’t be surprised to see something like a “Samsung Galaxy Swipe” or some other weird device launched with the purpose of testing out the technology. We’re getting a bit too far ahead of ourselves, though — we’re not even 100% sure that this will come to fruition.

Double Dragon Trilogy available for $2.99 in the Google Play Store

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 07:34 AM PST

Nostalgia always gets the best of us, which is why we were excited when we learned the Double Dragon Trilogy would be making its way to Android. Well, it’s here, and we’re glad to say that we haven’t been disappointed one bit. For $2.99, DotEmu has ported this classic in a way that feels familiar, yet can feel fresh depending on the options you choose.

The game features both arcade and story mode, three difficulty levels (mobile, original and expert), achievements and leaderboards through Google Play Games, co-op via Bluetooth, gamepad support and more. You can even choose between the original 8-bit soundtrack or a newly-remastered soundtrack especially made for this release.

You’ll get all three games for this one price, so if you are a Double Dragon nut and want to get your fix on the go, downloading this is a no-brainer. It’s in the Google Play Store, so get over there and check it out for yourself.

AT&T’s new contract-free Mobile Share Value plans start December 8th; saves you as much as $15

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 06:32 AM PST

ATTLOGO

AT&T has announced some new contract-free options in their Mobile Share Value plans. Launching December 8th, those who get AT&T service by getting AT&T Next, bringing their own devices, buying their device off-contract, or those whose contracts expire and opt to jump to the new Mobile Share Value plans will be able to get service for $15 cheaper than those who decide to stay the contract route.

This plan will afford you shared data (in whichever allotment you’re comfortable with) and unlimited text and data. For instance, the 300MB plan with unlimited talk and text was $60, but can be had for $45 under these new plans. While it’s not the same level of savings T-Mobile introduced with UnCarrier, it’s a lot better than most other carriers are willing to do at this point.

AT&T is also adding a new Next upgrade option for those who don’t need to be on a yearly upgrade schedule. You can now opt for an 18-month plan that will drive the cost of your monthly payments down (you’ll be on a 26-month time table with $0 down and no financing fees), but allow you to upgrade sooner than the standard 24-month window that contract customers currently have to deal with.

New options are always welcome, so be sure to stop by an AT&T store in a few days and inquire about these plans to see if they’re right for you.

Assassin’s Creed Pirates anchors into the Google Play Store for $5

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 06:03 AM PST

Ubisoft told us the mobile version of Assassin’s Creed, dubbed Assassin’s Creed Pirates, would be headed to the Google Play Store today, and their promise was about as full as a chest full of gold. You can download the game for $5 right now, and it’s already being treated to some pretty good reviews by those who have played it so far.

While it’s not nearly as comprehensive as the console versions folks are enjoying on the likes of the PS4 and Xbox One, Assassin’s Creed Pirates brings us the high seas as we’ve never seen them before on mobile. You can build up your own ship and crew, and set sail to take on others in a naval combat system that has us wondering why it took someone this long to make such a game.

The game features over 50 story missions and side quests, so you’re getting your money’s worth in the long run. Even if you weren’t a huge fan of Assassin’s Creed, Ubisoft has made a game that any pirate fan can get behind. Go ahead and find it in the Google Play Store if you’re interested.

How To Copy Text From "Uncopyable" Windows Screens

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 01:58 AM PST

If you're keeping notes of your PC activity, or compiling instructions for someone else on how to use their computer, it's often useful to copy and paste text from the operating system into a document or other program. Perhaps most common is the requirement to copy the text from an error message dialogue box, so that you can paste it into a search engine and hopefully find a solution to your problem.

Annoyingly, though, some parts of certain Windows screens won't let you copy the text. However hard you press the mouse button, the cursor stubbornly refuses to change into the shape that tells you it's allowing you to copy the text.

The solution is a small program called GetWindowText. It's a tiny 0.05 MB download and works on all versions of Windows from XP onwards.

Prescription Google Glass pictured in the wild gives us our best look at the eyewear yet

Posted: 04 Dec 2013 06:14 PM PST

Google Glass prescription 3

Up until now, we haven’t gotten a real good look at Google’s plans for prescription eyewearers looking to outfit themselves with Google Glass. Sure there was the scruffy looking fella from months ago, but it was still tough to make out exactly what was going on. Will Glass’s titanium frames be detachable? Will the main Glass unit simply stick to a existing frames?

Google Glass prescription prototype

Well, Googler Brian Matiash is finally giving us a better view of prescription Google Glass, sharing a few images of the high-tech eyewear — likely still in its prototype stages — to his his Google+ page. From the looks of it, frames carrying a design much like non-prescription Glass will need to be made specifically for Glass, with one side attaching to the main unit. This means if you were hoping to bring your current favorite pair of eyeglasses with you, they likely wont have a proper Glass fitment.

Google Glass prescription 2

Now that you’ve had a better look at prescription Glass, what do you guys think?

Google Glass v2 invites now being sent to existing Explorers for one-time swap

Posted: 04 Dec 2013 03:50 PM PST

Google Glass swap instructions

After Google promised current Explorers the 1-time opportunity to swap out their first generation Glass for the new v2 model, we were beginning to wonder if we were ever going to get the invite. Today seems to be that special day, with a few Glass Explorers on Phandroid’s team — myself included — now receiving swap instructions in our email inboxes.

Glass Swap Details

Current Explorers who purchased their Glass before October 28th are the only ones eligible for the swap, having until February 5th to begin the process. Before you ask, yes this is a swap, meaning we wont be giving away our old pairs here on the site (I know, we’d really like to). We should note that Google did mention that they’d be doing something “special” with the old pairs, but wouldn’t say at the moment.

Google promises the new and improved Google Glass Explorer Editions are faster, more durable, and compatible with their upcoming accessories like stereo headphones and prescription lenses. I smell another review incoming…

Google Search for Android can now find search results inside (some) apps already installed on your device

Posted: 04 Dec 2013 03:04 PM PST

Google Search App IndexingAnnounced earlier today, the Google Search app for Android is about to get a whole lot smarter. No, we’re not talking about the usual Google Now cards that come in every update, search results not pulled, not only from the web, but inside apps as well. This makes it easier than ever to find exactly what you’re looking for.

For instance, when searching for a movie, normally Search would pull up showtimes, or even its listing on IMDB.com. Not too useful when you already have the IMDB app already installed on your device, right? Now, when signed into your Google account, the Search app will know exactly what apps are installed on your device and show results found inside them with a simple “Open in app” link. Clicking the link will take you directly to the specific search query inside the app (like IMDB for instance), making Google Search a universal tool for searching the web for anything using your Android device. Currently, the new search results are only available in English, and for Android devices 2.3+. Also, at launch, only 13 apps support the new search feature:

  • AllTrails
  • Allthecooks
  • Beautylish
  • Etsy
  • Expedia
  • Flixster
  • Healthtap
  • IMDb
  • Moviefone
  • Newegg
  • OpenTable
  • Trulia
  • Wikipedia

Of course, relevant apps found on the Google Play Store will also be displayed when searching (ones that haven’t been installed on your device), a feature we saw introduced in Google Search back in 2010. The best part about these new (and old) Search features is that they can also be found in the Chrome and Android browsers by visiting the Google homepage — no Search app needed. As more developers make their apps compatible with this new feature, they better it will get. In the meantime, you can update the Google Search app via the link below.

Code found in Plex software hints that Chromecast support is just around the corner

Posted: 04 Dec 2013 02:04 PM PST

Chromecast featured

When the Chromecast first hit the scene back in July, Google’s streaming media dongle garnered a lot of attention from developers looking to develop for the new platform. It was the team at Plex — makers of the popular media player app that streams locally stored content to a variety of internet connected devices — that caused some of the biggest ruckus. Barely a few days after the Chromecast was made official, Plex tweeted how they were “actively investigating and optimistic” about future Chromecast support. This would help fix a glaring omission in the Chromecast, it’s complete lack of streaming locally stored media.

Towards the tail end of August, our own Derek Ross posted on his Google+ that Plex (and aVia) were already in talks with Google to support Chromecast and that a release was likely due sometime in the fall. Needless to say, Plex coming to the Chromecast hasn’t been the biggest secret. Now that we are on winter’s doorstep without hide nor hair of Plex on our streaming dongles, you might be wondering if any progress has been made. Well, fear not, it looks like Chromecast support is still very much in the cards.

chromecast-plex-profile

It was in the most recent version of Plex’s software that the fine folks at GigaOM discovered it already includes a Chromecast configuration file, right alongside Android, Firefox, Chrome, and others. Evidence doesn’t get much harder than that. With the Chromecast receiving a minor update this week, and Google holding a hack-a-thon this weekend for developers to preview their Google Cast API — brace yourselves, it seems Plex could be only the beginning. My Chromecast is ready.

Republic Wireless Moto X expected to receive Android 4.4 KitKat early next year

Moto X gaming performance DSC00728

Waiting for your chance to grab a discounted Moto X on Monday? Keep in mind you still have other options for grabbing an off-contract Moto X on the cheap, one that doesn’t even require you to watch your clock, index finger at the ready.

Offering the lowest possible monthly service rates — all contract-free — Republic Wireless recently launched the Moto X for their hybrid network at the low price of $299. That’s a full $50 cheaper than even Motorola’s Cyber Monday Wednesday Monday pt2 deal.

Republic Wireless rates plans

But, as to be expected, Republic Wireless’ Moto X comes with a few caveats. Aside from suffering through Sprint’s network when away from an active WiFi connection (we kid, it’s not that bad where LTE is available), RW’s Moto X is still only on Android 4.2.2, while just about every other carrier (even US Cellular) has begun rolling out Android 4.4 KitKat to the handset.

A quick look through the Republic Wireless’ Moto X FAQ revealed the carrier’s intentions of keeping their Moto X up to date with the latest firmwares provided by Motorola. Whether you’re already a Republic Wireless customer, or considering making the switch in the future you might be wondering — where is KitKat for the Republic Wireless Moto X?

Moto X KitKat

Well, according to Republic Wireless’ Twitter page, they’re expecting to release Android 4.4 for the Moto X in “early 2014″. Remember, Republic Wireless’ Moto X actually runs a custom ROM to help the device seamlessly transition between WiFi and cellular calling, meaning some fine tuning (and testing) is involved. It’s not a solid date, but one that should help ease concerns for those looking to purchase a Moto X off-contract, with the lowest possible cell phone bill.

Thanks, Nathan!

US Cellular’s Moto X gets Android 4.4 KitKat today

moto-x-featured-LARGE

With nearly every other version of the Moto X starting to get Android 4.4 KitKat, some US Cellular folks have been wondering when they’d be let in on  the fun. Thankfully it won’t take quite as long to get it as some might have thought (due to the carrier being just outside the big four here in America). Motorola’s Punit Soni has announced that the US Cellular Moto X will be getting KitKat as early as today.

The rollout is taking place in phases, so it’s possible not everyone will be able to get in on the action right away. Users will be treated to many great changes — some of which are brought along with KitKat, and some of which Motorola decided to put in on their own. Here’s the full list:

  • Android™ 4.4, KitKat®: Android 4.4, KitKat, is the latest release of the Android platform. KitKat includes enhancements such as restyled status and navigation bars, a new full-screen mode, color emoji support, improved closed captioning support, stronger security, smarter power use, and more tools and capabilities for better app development.
  • Phone dialer: Improved the phone app with the ability to look up contacts directly from the dial pad, see and tap frequent contacts, and search your corporate directory easily.
  • Camera – Focus and exposure: Enhanced the “touch to focus” option with a new circular, on screen control that can be dragged by your finger around the viewfinder to adjust a photo’s focus and exposure.
  • Gallery – Photo editing: Added new photo editing options to the Gallery app including new filter effects, draw on your photos, advanced cropping, and adjustments to color, exposure, contrast and more.
  • Hangouts -SMS/MMS support: Incorporated a new version of Google Hangouts that supports integrated SMS/MMS messaging. Hangouts can be set as the default SMS app under Settings > Wireless > Default SMS app.
  • Touchless Control – “Find my phone”: Added a new “Find my phone” command to Touchless Control. Just say “OK, Google Now-find my phone” and your Moto X will ring loudly to let you know where it’s hiding when you’ve misplaced it nearby.
  • NFC – Host card emulation: Enhanced support for NFC Host Card Emulation (HCE), to improve experiences such as contactless payments, loyalty plans, transit passes, card access and more.
  • Accessory support: Added support for Square credit card reader

To check for an upgrade, head to Settings > About Phone, and then hit the System Updates menu to see if your device is ready to pull it down. You should be looking for version 143.44.2.ghost_usc.USC.en.US. You’ll want to be on WiFi with a decently charged battery, so be sure to hold off until you can meet those conditions. Now we’re just waiting for the likes of Sprint and Republic Wireless to be invited to the party, something we suspect won’t take too much longer to happen.

Andy Rubin left Android to make… androids

Posted: 04 Dec 2013 09:14 AM PST

andy_rubin

No, you didn’t read that title wrong. Andy Rubin left the Android team to make androids, but it’s not the type of Android we talk about here every day. Instead, the Godfather of Android has taken up a new ambitious project within the Google X labs researching actual robotics. The New York Times has the full account of Rubin’s whereabouts, where they detailed a half-year span of acquisitions for this very project.

The plan is to advance robotics to a stage where industrial handy work won’t have to be carried out by mere mortals. There are bound to be more than a few people opposing such a future, what with jobs already scarce due to today’s technology. Some of the companies Google snapped up for the project had a hand in creating humanoid robots in the past, the type that might resemble the scary specimens Will Smith battled in I, Robot.

But just how close are we to a future where those types of robots might be able to help folks out in the workplace? We could be as long as a decade a way, as Rubin apparently suggested this project could take that many years of research before anything actually comes to fruition.

This is a project Andy Rubin has been wanting to undertake for years, but it wasn’t until recently that Google gave him a real shot to pursue his dreams. Rubin’s career actually kicked off with a robotics engineering position for optical firm Carl Zeiss.

Since then, he has had a hand in many of today’s popular technology, including Danger (the folks behind the SideKick) and the Android platform we all know and love. Almost everything he has touched has turned to gold, and we’re hoping the same rings true with this new-old love.

Even though he admitted this was a “moonshot,” Rubin hopes he and his team can achieve great things in the years to come, even if his exact vision doesn’t sprout into a practical solution. One thing’s for sure: we’ll have our pom-poms going, cheering him on in full force.

LG G Flex starts going on sale worldwide; coming to Europe in January

Posted: 04 Dec 2013 07:58 AM PST

LG has announced that the LG G Flex is now rolling out on a global scale. The early days won’t see a widespread rollout, with only a few Asian countries getting in on the fun. This includes folks in Singapore on December 8th, and Hong Kong on December 13th. LG didn’t have specific dates for other regions, but they did mention we should be seeing the device launch in Europe before the end of January.

lg-g-flex-front

The LG G Flex is the company’s first flexible smartphone that has been proven to be quite durable. Not only can it bend, twist and turn without breaking, but its back cover can take quite the beating and heal itself within seconds or minutes. You needn’t look any further than the video at this link to see just how strong this smartphone is supposed to be.

The phone isn’t bad under the hood either, with the following specs making up its core:

  • 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (MSM 8974)
  • GPU: Adreno 330, 450MHz
  • 6-inch screen
  • HD resolution (1280 x 720), Curved P-OLED (Real RGB)
  • 2GB RAM
  • 32GB Storage
  • 13.0MP rear camera
  • 2.1MP front camera
  • 3,500mAh battery
  • Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • USB 3.0
  • WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
  • NFC

We’ll be looking forward to its arrival to the rest of the world in the first quarter of 2014, but for now just know that some lucky customers, somewhere, will soon be getting their hands on one of the most interesting phones LG’s ever made.

Any.DO brings Cal, a beautiful calendar app for Android, to Google Play

Posted: 04 Dec 2013 06:26 AM PST

Anyone who’s used an Android device knows the calendar experience isn’t always the most pleasant thing to write home about, but one company is looking to change that with a comprehensive app that will make you enjoy keeping up with your day-to-day tasks. It’s Any.DO’s Cal (already available for iOS), and they’re promising big things with the launch of their second app for Android.

The app features beautiful design that follows Android’s card-based UI guidelines quite nicely, but it’s the functionality that Any.DO is hoping will keep your attention. Here’s what they’re setting out to do with Cal:

  • Social and location integration predicts who you want to meet and even suggest nearby places for meeting them
  • Any.do tasks are perfectly woven into your calendar so you can see what needs to get done for each event
  • Cal knows when you'll need to get on the road and let's you seamlessly get an Uber, or use Google Maps to navigate your way there
  • Swipe, tilt, and flow your way through a productive day while still finding time between commitments to refocus on what matters
  • Rich graphics in 9 specially curated photo themes add harmony to working life and personal time

It’s not just a meaningless subset of features that adds empty social features. Cal embraces the third-party services and apps already available to make your calendar experience more useful to you in ways that matter to you.

The Android app isn’t some carbon copy port from iOS, either — Any.DO actually took care to add some features that Android users will no doubt appreciate. A fully-featured widget, landscape mode, Google Calendar and Exchange sync, even tighter Any.DO integration and more are all coming together to make this experience even more tasty than what our iOS-using friends have been treated to all this time.

The best part of all this? It’s free, and it’s sitting in the Google Play Store right now. Go ahead and download it and see if you can’t discover a better way to keep track of everything that’s going on in your life. Watch the video above if you want the visual rundown.

Motorola posts further details on the Moto X $150 off sale reattempt going down today at 12pm Eastern

Posted: 04 Dec 2013 05:46 AM PST

It was a sad day Monday, when many hopeful Moto X purchasers woke up bright and early to see if they could get the KitKat-donning smartphone for as little as just $350 off-contract. The deals went live mid-morning, but it wasn’t long before the train completely fell off the tracks.

moto x holiday sale

Motorola’s site came to a complete crawl almost instantly, and tons of customers were unable to get through the checkout process to secure their order. It was so bad that Motorola’s CEO Dennis Woodside had to come out and apologize, and Motorola had to offer up a couple more opportunities to get on the deal.

That first opportunity goes down later today at 12PM Eastern, where you’ll not only be able to get $150 off any Moto X (including Moto Maker versions), but you are also being given an extra 30% off accessories bought with the code when using the promo code THANKS.

So what do you need to do once that time comes later today? Motorola lays it all out for us:

  • Go to motorola.com/holiday2daysale and register for the promotion starting at noon EST on the two sale days. You will know right away if quantities are still available.
  • Once registered, you will be emailed a promo code within a few hours. This code is active for one week.
  • Go to Moto Maker and design your phone within the one week window (take your time and have fun!).
  • At checkout, enter your one-time promo code to receive $150 off the no-contract price in the shopping cart. (Your code only works once and for one phone.)
  • Submit your order to get rocking with your custom Moto X in time for the holidays. Moto Maker will provide an estimated delivery date while you design your product and again at checkout. You will also receive an email when we start assembling your device as well as when it ships.

This sounds much better than the mad dash to checkout that happened this past Monday, and should give folks plenty of time to customize their Moto X and make sure it’s just right for them. This sale will also happen Monday, December 9th, so don’t be too disappointed if you can’t get in on the fun right away. And Motorola says they’ll be offering even more stock than they originally planned for both days, so folks should have no problem getting a Moto X if they really want one.

moto-x-featured-LARGE

It’s not guaranteed that the servers will be able to hold up again later today, but at least you know you won’t have to go through a lengthy checkout process if you’re able to get in. The promo code method allows them to get you on and off the server quickly, which should give you F5 fiends a real shot at this thing.

Let’s just keep our fingers crossed that things go over as smoothly as the Nexus 5 launch surprisingly went this past Halloween. Be sure to read the FAQ if you are looking for more detailed information about how the sale will work. Anyone still looking to take advantage of this deal?
