Square Enix slashes price on most Final Fantasy titles by 50%, Chaos Rings trilogy by 60% [DEALS] Posted: 20 Dec 2013 06:05 PM PST If spending more than a few hours with your family is enough to give you anxiety, Square Enix just might have your perfect escape. Starting today in the Google Play Store, many of their popular (read: expensive) Android titles have been marked down by as much as 60%. Square Enix has been notorious for releasing some of the Play Store’s more expensive titles, only these come without those annoying in-app purchases plaguing freemium titles. You get what you pay for. Here’s the running list:
Not too shabby right? As for myself, I’ll take this as the perfect opportunity to pick up all the 3D FF remakes I never got the chance to beat/purchase on my Nintendo DS. As a heads up, you might want to only purchase when you have a chance to make sure the install process goes without a hitch. There’s been more than a few reports of incompatibility issues on some devices. Don’t worry about waiting until after Christmas to give these a download. The sale is running from now until January 5th, so you have plenty of time. Oh, and hit the source link to find even more popular Android games on sale from publishers like Gameloft, Warner Bros, EA as well as a handful of indie devs. Cheers, everyone. via DroidGamers |
Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 expected to receive KitKat as early as January Posted: 20 Dec 2013 04:06 PM PST Where HTC has been refreshingly open about their upgrade schedule for Android 4.4 KitKat, we’re still forced to play the guessing game with others. Dealing specifically with the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 — 2 of Samsung’s biggest devices of the year — users are still left in the dark on when they should be expecting Android 4.4 KitKat to hit their devices. That’s not to say we haven’t had a few hints. Back in November, a purported leaked document from Samsung India showed a KitKat release date for the Galaxy S4 and Note 3 slated for January. Adding more fuel to that date is French carrier SFR who, in a blog post, says KitKat will be available in late January/February for Samsung’s flagships. SFR has been reliable with their info in the past, hitting the mark on Android 4.3 timing for the Galaxy S3, Note 2, and HTC One. Of course update timing is always different depending on region. Typically, software updates like these need to undergo an extensive testing process before carriers will push them to handsets on their network. A full fledged firmware update like KitKat is bound to come with more than a few changes to TouchWiz. We’ll keep you updated. |
Elf available for free on Google Play for a limited time Posted: 20 Dec 2013 02:15 PM PST It’s gotta be in our top 5 list for favorite holiday movies. And if you hurry, you can hop on over to the Google Play Store and add Elf — starring Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel — to your Movies & TV library for absolutely free. Perfect watching on your Chromecast, just keep in mind only the standard version is being offered for free, with the HD version running about $5. Even then, that’s one heck of a deal. Link below.

Unboxing: Google Glass v2.0 [VIDEO] Posted: 20 Dec 2013 12:45 PM PST Back in October, rumors that Google was hard at work on a revised version of the still very beta Google Glass came to fruition when the Project Glass team officially unveiled the all new Google Glass v2. The best part was then current Glass Explorers were given the 1-time opportunity to swap out their pre-release hardware for the newer version — completely free of charge. After shipping our dusty old Glass last week (Google was nice enough to provide the packaging), today our new and improved unit finally arrived. Before we dived into the packaging, we figured we’d share with you — our readers — the unboxing of Google Glass 2.o, to give you a better idea of what to expect should you find an invite landing in your lap in the near future. Let’s jump right in. Really, there are little-to-no differences, aesthetically, between new and old Glass. Google did point out that Glass 2.0 will offer compatibility with their new line of accessories. This includes not only earbuds, but prescription lenses as well. Giving the Glass 2.0 the careful once over, we noticed the nose piece has been spaced a little further apart, allowing for not only a more comfortable fit, but easier attaching of the sun shades. Inside the box, everything remained the same as our original unboxing, except bundled inside the carrying case was Google Glass 2.0′s new mono earbud. The accessory plugs right into Glass’ micro USB port, and offers drastically improved volume when in noisy environments, one of our biggest issues when using Glass in public. Another new addition arriving in Google Glass v2 is the controversial wink to capture feature introduced in the XE12 update. The “experimental feature” can be found buried in the settings menu and once enabled, allows the wearer to snap pics using Glass with a simple. After setting it up, it seemed to work fairly well. The actual display doesn’t even have to be on for it to work, making it extremely incognito. Keep an eye on Phandroid for more Google Glass coverage. Also, don’t forget to check out the Google Glass forums where, if you’re lucky, you might even be able to snag a Glass invite (providing you have $1,500 burning a hole in your wallet). |

First Google-certified CyanogenMod phone, the Oppo N1, on sale 12/24 [VIDEO] Posted: 20 Dec 2013 09:27 AM PST News of the Oppo N1 shipping with CyanogenMod pre-installed dropped in September, with the involved parties revealing last month that the device would launch in December. As the end of the month draws near, the partners have cut it close with the announcement that the limited edition version of the N1 will go on sale December 24th. While this means you likely won't be able to grab one in time for a late Christmas present, the world's first phone to ship with CyanogenMod out of the box and Google CTS certification will soon be in the hands of Android enthusiasts with a liking for CM's take on the mobile platform. In the US, the Oppo N1 with CyanogenMod will be available through Amazon and Oppo's web store. An exact pricing has not been announced. The Oppo N1 features a 5.9-inch 1080p display, 1.7GHz Snapdragon 600 CPU, and 2GB of RAM along with a 13MP (rotating) camera. The special edition CyanogenMod version will ship with a themed case and other extras. [via Twitter] |

BBM reaches 40 million downloads as BlackBerry faces massive losses Posted: 20 Dec 2013 08:08 AM PST BBM for iOS and Android has reached 40 million downloads in 60 days, and that's about the extent of the good news to emerge from BlackBerry's latest fiscal report. The floundering company reported $4.4 billion in losses on revenue that has dropped by over 50 percent from the same period last year. The latest only digs a deeper hole for the once-proud BlackBerry after posting a loss of $1 billion for the second quarter of the fiscal year. BlackBerry's latest response? An increased partnership with Foxconn, which will see the Chinese production house sharing in the development and manufacturing of new BlackBerry devices as well as manage inventory. The arrangement allows BlackBerry to retain the name and rights to its product lineup while reducing its hand in the actual hardware portion of the business. As might be expected, BlackBerry stock took a hit that was greater than anticipated following news of continued losses, but there seems to be some hope stemming from the Foxconn partnership. Will it be enough to save a company that can't seem to get back on track? A deal with Foxconn is a smart move in some respects (ignoring the stigma of labor rights issues surrounding the company's manufacturing plants). In lieu of BlackBerry deciding it would no longer seek partners in a deal to sell the company, it might have been their best option. Between a deal with Foxconn and decent performance by BBM on third-party platforms, can BlackBerry make a comeback? What do you think? |
Samsung Galaxy Tab ‘Pro’ and ‘Lite’ models coming in 2014 Posted: 20 Dec 2013 06:50 AM PST Samsung's 2014 tablet roadmap is becoming a bit clearer if rumors of new 'Pro' and 'Lite' models pan out. According to SamMobile, four devices are on the slate for next year ranging from an 8.4-inch model all the way to a 12.2-inch Galaxy Note. The four tablets are as follows:
All tablets will come in both WiFi-only and cellular configurations, with Pro models getting LTE while the lo-price Galaxy Tab 3 Lite relegated to 3G. That device will be the first to launch and feature a 7-inch screen size. It is expected to be priced around $150 when it launches at the beginning of the year. The other tablets, with screen sizes to reflect their names, will be available later in the first quarter of the year. [via SamMobile]

HTC wants to replace your bad gifts with a shiny new HTC One Posted: 19 Dec 2013 07:26 PM PST It’s happens every year. No matter how good your friend’s or family’s intentions are during the holidays, you always seem to end up with that single “off” gift. Whether it’s a dancing snowman, or reindeer boxer briefs, HTC’s got your back. The smartphone manufacturer is currently throwing a contest where willing participants have the opportunity of swapping their “bad” gifts for something… better. How does a shiny new HTC One sound? That’s what we thought. To enter, all HTC wants you to do is snap a picture of your bad gift Instagram with the hashtag #replacemygift. Don’t forget to follow and tag @HTC in the photo’s description, along with the a description of what makes the gift so terrible. Where this seems like an easy opportunity to bash another manufacturer’s products, HTC makes it clear they don’t want pictures of brands or rival manufactures pictured. Good fun, and all that. Those with the most creative or fun pics will find themselves with a brand new HTC One, as announced on the official HTC blog. For the complete set of rules, you’re going to want to head on over to their official rules and regulations list. Don’t worry, it’s pretty straight forward. Good luck! [HTC Blog] |
