A Thank-you from Gizmo

What a year this has been. For the first time in recent memory, PC sales have declined. Not only declined but declined continuously in each of the three quarters of 2013 for which we have records.

The causes are well known: the replacement of PCs by tablets and smartphones, the market failure of Windows 8, a flat world economy and significantly, the fact that many users now see their existing PCs as good enough for the tasks they carry out and hence don't need to be replaced.

This dramatic new trend in hardware sales reflects an equally dramatic change in computer software. The traditional market for Windows utilities obtained through download sites is being replaced by apps downloaded from centralized stores operated by Apple, Google and Microsoft. Furthermore most of these apps are free or priced very low.

This rapid change in the market has meant that we have had to make significant changes here at Gizmo's Freeware. You will have noticed that mobile apps are now more prominent on the site and will become even more so from early next year when we change the site design to a responsive layout that provides better access for those with small screen devices.

However be assured; none of these adjustments in our coverage will change our focus on free Windows desktop utilities. These will remain at the heart of our mission even if they do have to share the stage with mobile apps.

So 2014 is going to bring significant challenges to this site if we are to better meet the needs of our 35 million plus annual site visitors. However Gizmo's Freeware has always been a strong community site so with your assistance and patience I'm sure we can meet these challenges and make the site better than ever.

As the year draws to an end I'd like to thank all our regular users for their loyalty and contribution through their thousands of posts and comments. I'd also like to thank our volunteer editors and tireless moderators without whose efforts, this site could not exist.

To all of you scattered across the world in 141 different countries, I wish a healthy, peaceful and prosperous New Year.

Gizmo
