Moto X 64GB coming to Motomaker this Sunday and yes, you’ll be able to test drive it too

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 04:54 PM PDT

Motorola Moto X DSC00695

Along with the announcement of Motorola’s upcoming “try before you buy” promotion (kicking off this Monday), the Android manufacturer also had another interesting bit of news. Turns out this Sunday, June 8th, a 64GB version of the Moto X will be available on Motomaker as one of the phone’s customizable options.

This confirms previous leaks that Motorola would be introducing a 64GB model and the sheer fact that this will even be an option in Motomaker gives us hope that the upcoming Moto X+1 will also offer the same high storage capacity. The 64GB Moto X will cost $100 more than its 16GB counterpart, which makes sense given the 32GB version comes at a $50 premium.

Combine this with a wood back for an added $25, and you have yourself a fairly expensive off-contract device offering last year’s specs. Looks like carrier availability will be set to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile (unlocked) or Republic Wireless, but nothing of a Verizon option.

Check back with Motomaker this Sunday should you have a hankerin’ for a Moto X with a little more trunk space.

First wave of OnePlus One invites rolling out now

OnePlus One invites rolling out

Better check our inbox. The folks at OnePlus have announced, where else, but their Google+ account that they’ve officially begun rolling out the first wave of OnePlus One invites for those that were some of the first to sign up.

OnePlus-Invite

Our own Derek Ross received his a short time ago, although I’m still awaiting mine. OnePlus assured us that just about everyone who was looking to buy the device would be able to pick one up during this more general availability, so we’ll have to wait and see if they can ramp up production to meet demand.

QuickPic 3.5 Beta 2

QuickPic is one of Google Play’s oldie-but-goodies, an app that’s continued to evolve its X years on the market. Recently, the developer teased a complete visual makeover for the gallery app, but today, is allowing users to take some upcoming features for a spin via QuickPic’s new beta community.

By now, you know the story. Join the beta community on Google+, then enroll as a tester on Google Play to try out the beta releases of the app. But because the developer is such a G, he’s simply including a direct link to avoid the typical Google Play beta sign up. Awesome.

Should you run into any issues, leave the developer some feed back on the new QuickPic 3.5 Beta 2 on Google+. Just remember to include info like your device name, Android version, QuickPic version, the issue, and a screenshot (if possible).

Motorola is letting you test drive a custom Moto X before you buy [UPDATE]

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 01:03 PM PDT

Motorola Moto X try before you buy deal

After recently dropping the price of a Moto X as part of a 2-day sale, Motorola is back with another enticing promotion. Starting Monday, June 9th, you can custom build your own specialty Motorola Moto X via Motomaker and only pay 1 single cent.

More of an Amazon-like try-before-you-buy promotion, you have 2 weeks to test drive the Moto X before deciding if it’s the right phone for you. Motorola says the deal will only be good “while supplies last,” meaning you may want to mark it down on your calendar if the Moto X sounds like a phone you’ve been thinking about picking up for sometime. Here are the terms:

What are the Terms of Service for the Try Then Buy program?

Motorola will charge your credit card after 14 days if you have not created a return request via our online form.

If the phone is returned damaged (e.g. cracked screen), Motorola will charge the credit card on file for the repairs.  If the phone is non-functional due to user damages, Motorola will charge the full retail price.

All items delivered to you in the box containing the phone will need to be returned, including the handset itself, wall charger, cable, the SIM removal tool, the SIM card, and documentation.

If the phone is not returned and the credit card on file cannot settle, Motorola will notify you and provide you with an additional period of time to provide a valid new credit card number.  If you fail to provide a valid credit card number in the stated time frame, Motorola has the right to remotely disable the phone and/or to pass your account to a collections agency.

All Try Then Buy orders must be shipped to the same address for which the billing address is associated.  If the bill to / ship to are not the same, the order will be canceled.

Motorola reserves the right to place a full authorization on your credit card or to cancel your order after your order is submitted if fraudulent activity is suspected. Motorola will attempt to reverse the authorization on your credit card after a successful authorization. Authorization reversal may take up to 5 business days.

Full promotion details can be found via Motorola’s FAQ linked below. Anyone thinking about test driving the contract-free Moto X for a few weeks?

Tetris celebrates its 30th anniversary, guess it’s time to revisit the classic [VIDEO]

It’s hard to believe that it was exactly 30 years ago today, the game that many of us grew up on was first conceived. Named after the Greek word for the number 4, Tetris is officially celebrating its 30 anniversary around the world.

To help celebrate, you can download Tetris Blitz from the Google Play Store recently updated with new features for the event, including retro-skinned tournaments featuring 80′s inspired Tetris music and gameplay. Feels like it was only yesterday my brother and I were playing this game underneath a church pew. How far we’ve come.

theScore update brings redesign and new features ahead of 2014 FIFA World Cup

thescore app

Everyone’s getting geared up for the 2014 FIFA World Cup set to kick-off in Brazil next month. That includes theScore, whose app has gotten a very nice upgrade over at the Google Play Store.

Alongside a newly-redesigned user interface (it looks a lot more at home than it did before), you’re getting a full section specifically made for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, including brackets for the initial knockout phases. You’ll be treated to your typical mill of scores, stats and schedules, as well as information about all your favorite teams and players heading into the big tournament.

And that’s not even the end of the list. Take a look:

  •  Added ability to sign up for mass notifications on scores pages (i.e.: subscribe to alerts for all MLB games on any given day)
  • Added ability to filter by leagues within Top News
  • Addition of player alerts for all soccer leagues
  • Fixed “connection error” issue on scores and standings pages
  • Crash fixes

Not a bad way to rope more folks in (especially for those like me who are getting quite tired of the dated ESPN Scorecenter app). Be sure to give it a shot in the Google Play Store ahead of the big opening ceremony next week!

Samsung hypes up Premier 2014 event with new teaser video, expect SAMOLED tablets

Samsung Galaxy Premier Tab Into Color 2014 event

For those unaware, Samsung is preparing a June 12th “Galaxy Premier” event at the Madison Square Garden in New York. Now, they aren’t saying exactly what they’re planning on unveiling, but ‘ol Sammy has uploaded a teaser video hyping the event on YouTube.

The video, which doesn’t give away much, features a count with the tagline “Tab into Color” and the side profile of what appears to be one of their new tablets. If we had to bet money, we’d say Samsung is gearing up to announce their much leaked Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.5, the first to feature the best display technology on the market: Samsung’s Super AMOLED display.

They’ll be streaming the whole shindig live on their site at 7PM (EDT), and we’ll be on hand for a hands-on of whatever they should announce. According to a leak, we could expect these tablets to launch on June 27th at select retailers. Oh, and because we don’t want you getting your hopes up, don’t expect anything along the lines of a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 or any other smartphone what-so-ever to make an appearance at the event.

CyanogenMod Theme Showcase app heads to Google Play June 16th

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 09:31 AM PDT

cyanogenmod logo 5

CyanogenMod has announced that their Theme Showcase app will be finding a home in Google Play starting June 16th. In case you’re not in the know, Theme Showcase was first revealed on the OnePlus One and will be used to highlight the many different themes made for CyanogenMod ROMs using the CyanogenMod Theme Engine.

The app itself doesn’t deliver said themes — it only showcases them. It will have a handy link to the Google Play Store to grab the theme for yourself if you decide you like its looks, though.

Quick note if you yourself are a theme maker and haven’t yet converted your theme to the new theme engine: GitHub has all the goods to get you started. Once you’ve taken care of that you can submit your theme for consideration to be included in the initial crop of spotlighted themes right here.

Samsung tablet with 4K display spotted in the wild

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 08:04 AM PDT

samsung 4k tablet 1

While most of us are still waiting for Quad HD displays (2560 x 1440) to become the high-end standard, Samsung could already be looking ahead to 4K. Qualcomm had a Snapdragon 801-powered Samsung tablet on-hand at a recent event of theirs, but it wasn’t anything we’ve ever seen before.

This particular tablet had a 4K display. It would be the first time we’ve ever heard of Samsung looking to put 4K panels into a tablet, and it’s strange considering the company has yet to reveal their first AMOLED Quad HD tablets. We expect that particular announcement to come next week when Samsung puts on a tablet-centric event over in the Big Apple.

The tablet at Qualcomm’s event didn’t have actual 4K content to show, however they did show how crisp a multi-window setup could look on top of a video running at a resolution of, say, 720p. The resolution gave enough screen real estate to watch a tennis match, see a map of the area, and view scores and stats all at the same time. It’s exciting stuff to say the least, though if Qualcomm’s word is anything to go by we won’t be seeing our first 4K devices launch until the latter portions of the year.

Chromebook users can now watch Google Play Movies offline

GPlay_chromeapp_v01_r04 (1)

One of the downsides of using a Chromebook to watch movies is that you had to be online to view them. Thankfully Google has changed all that with the latest upgrade as they have enabled offline viewing for those who can’t seem to get set up on a WiFi connection whenever they feel like watching their favorite film. All you need to do to get the new functionality is update the appropriate Chrome extension right here.

Google also detailed a couple of other neat changes, including offline Info Cards and better Chromecast and local playback experience for anyone watching content through the browser. Be sure to check all of that out if you’ve been yearning for these changes.

Deal: get $50 in Google Play credit when opening a new line with AT&T

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 05:33 AM PDT

att-store-logo

Here’s a quick deal for those of you planning on buying a new smartphone or tablet on Ma Bell soon. AT&T is giving away $50 in Google Play credit to folks buying an Android smartphone or tablet under a two-year contract or an AT&T Next installment agreement.

Google Play credit is good toward any digital items over at Google Play, including books, games, apps, music, movies, magazines and TV shows. What you can’t get are devices and accessories, so keep that in mind whenever you’re planning out your splurge fest. Here are just a few things to note from AT&T’s FAQ:

  • Upon getting your phone, AT&T will email you with a code within seven business days, and you’ll need to redeem the code by July 31st to get in on it. No
  • You can get up to 10 of these $50 credits if you happen to be activating that many Android devices.
  • The credits must be used by May 15th, 2015 or else they’ll expire.
  • You’ll need a Google Wallet account to redeem the credits, but if you have a Google account (which you should since you’re getting an Android device) that should be easy enough.

And that’s it. No reason not to take advantage if you are planning to upgrade or open new lines of service. Be sure to read up on the promotion here and go wild in the Play Store whenever your credits arrive.
